Dances with Dirt is a 50k / 50 mile ultra running event based
out of “Hell, Michigan.” It’s September 6th, 2008. Here’s a description of the course:

The footing (What footing?) is rocky, muddy (a few river crossings) and
loose in places. The trail is not maintained (non-existent) in some areas. We
love this stuff and hope you do too. ILK RULES! Bring on the ILK! ILK me! Is
the trail as tough as advertised? Yes and No. I’t s no run down a nature trail
(but at times it is just that), you will get wet and muddy. You won’t get swept
down stream in any whitewater. Some big hills but no supplemental oxygen is
needed. Our descriptions are a disclaimer. All in all, a great run in a
beautiful environment…with stupid spots.

Sounds like a great time! Race organizers used TopoFusion to map and
tweak the course. And in a special promotion, we’ve offered a “Dances with
Dirt” version of TopoFusion. This free version of TopoFusion doesn’t have any
Demo tiles obscuring maps, nor is it limited to three files open. It is,
however, limited to viewing the area (southern MI and northern IN/OH). This
version also includes all the GPS files for the Dances with Dirt course.

I downloaded the info from the Dances With Dirt website (I’m running the 100K relay on Saturday) and I can’t get the program to install on my computer (Dell laptop). I get the following error message when I click “Install”:

    Error opening file for writing:
    C:\Program Files\TopoFusion\GSI\city-small.gpx
Click Abort to stop the installation,
    Retry to try again, or
    Ignore to skip this file.

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

    Hi Deanna,

That’s a strange error. That particular file is non-essential, so it would be OK to ignore it.

However, it indicates something amiss in the installer. I would try downloading the install package again. Make sure you delete the original one first.

If you’re still having problems, please don’t hesitate to contact us at “support@topofusion.com”. We are back from our trip and will be quick on response — race day is coming up!

I downloaded and installed the DWD demo and was using it fine for a bit, then I did something to kick up an error that keeps happening everytime I open it. Error is a Fatal Error – “Resetting D3D device failed, etc.”. I have tried – closing all other programs, re-installing Topo and also restarting the machine. Error still occurs.

  4. admin Says:

    Hi Dave,

That’s a pretty fundamental error. I’d like to see what’s going on — can you send me the file “TopoFusion.log” from your C:\Program Files\TopoFusion directory?

That’ll give us some clues. In the meantime, I would try deleting the file “TopoFusion.ini” from the same directory. That’ll give you some fresh settings — unless you remove everything when uninstalling, a reinstall won’t remove this file.

Thanks and sorry about the issue.
