Ghost Trails

If you haven’t heard, Jill Homer has quietly released her first book, Ghost Trails, about adventures leading up to and during the Iditarod bike race to McGrath. I’ve never met Jill, but I check in on her blog from time to time. With her penchant for suffering, it’s always good reading. Besides, I’m …. [Continue reading]

Brown

I didn’t have anything to buy or sell, so I skipped the swap. But I rode down there anyway to meet Chad as he was closing up Arizona Endurance Series t-shirt shop. Lee joined (making it a 3x Lenz Leviathan ride) us and we pedaled west on the fastest path to Brown Mountain.

Full Moon Suburbo

moon…

… rise

sun …

… set

After exiting the river path, riding back home, I was reminded of another reason last night’s “Tuesday Community Ride” was so cool — being SEEN, as a cyclist, in the dark. Hard to miss 100+ cyclists riding together. …. [Continue reading]

Tuesday Night Community Ride

Paula and I attended our first Tuesday Night Community Ride. Over 100 people were there despite the “cold.” I needed to take some pictures for bicycling.com and once again I proved my lack of nighttime photo skill.

Meet at UA’s Old Main @8:00 pm.

Go for a ride.

Area 52

Area 52 – orange rock and white scree, no trails and free ride lines. Dream riding.

Louis, the supreme overlord of Area 52, travels the mesa like he was born there.

No gimmies out there, it isn’t a very forgiving place.

But beautiful. Every …. [Continue reading]

AZT carnage

I stopped to grab a bite to eat.

“Wow, that grasshopper is sitting on a shin dagger!”

Oh wait…

I’ve seen some severely uncoordinated jumps by the thousands of grasshoppers on the trails these days. So it wasn’t too much of a stretch that one could land, upside down, and impale itself …. [Continue reading]

Bicas “Bike in” Movie

Last night was the Bicas “Bike in” movie night. Kind of like a “drive in” movie, but without the cars. Pretty cool idea if you ask me.

We met at 6:30 for a casual ride around downtown Tucson:

Ghost riders…

I …. [Continue reading]

On exploration

Planning rides is one of my favorite things to do. I scroll through maps and piece together fragments of GPS tracks, adding a healthy dose of daydreaming.

Sometimes (often) I ask myself, what’s the point? I see these places on the map… the crest of the Magdalena mountains, the desolate arroyo country northeast of Socorro, …. [Continue reading]

Grand Enchantment Trail, Magdalena to Duke City

It started with an early morning punch in the face: 3k of vert in about 6 miles. Rideable? Yeah, save a few rocky pitches. Did it feel good? Not really. Maybe for Lee – he’s lightened his kit, dropped the rack and been training for this trip.

It showed. He stayed …. [Continue reading]

Wrapping up the GET…?

One trip down, another starting soon. Lee and I are leaving this afternoon to Phoenix for the AZT slideshow. It was fun going through our pictures from that trip — it was one of my favorites.

Then it’s on to Magdalena to pick up the Enchantment Trail where we left off last time.

Bikepacking AZT south

Paula and I spent a morning gathering gear and packing. We left from the house, using a combination of city bus and pedal power to head southeast to the Arizona Trail.

Soon we were on the trail and the race was on. It was 93 degrees and we had ice cream …. [Continue reading]

Tying flags to spiky things in the desert

Spent a day in the Tortolita Mountains with Mark F, tying flags to spiky things in the desert. Interesting terrain. A few good rock features to include. Some switchbacks. It’s been too long since I’ve scouted new trail alignments.

We almost burned up the county’s Ford Explorer on the very 4×4 approach.

It’s …. [Continue reading]

AZT Slide Show Oct 15 @REI Phoenix

Lee Blackwell and I will be giving a slide show in about two weeks up in Phoenix.

We were asked by the Arizona Trail Assc. to talk about our 2005 end to end trip on the AZT.

Date: 10/15/08 (Weds) Place: REI Tempe store Time: 6:30p

Tons of hike-a-bike, crossing the Grand Canyon with …. [Continue reading]

What’s wrong with this picture?

I got a new fork for the Behemoth. 120mm TA Manitou fork:

But wait, something is seriously wrong here… (what is it?)

So instead I rode the Lev.

Whatchu lookin’ at, human??

He should have been in this shot, but by the time I moved my clumsy self over …. [Continue reading]

Visiting Tucson

My parents were in town last week, so I had the pleasure of showing them a few Tucson trails.

My dad at Starr Pass. I forgot to bring him a helmet, so he rode without.

Later, we hiked Sentinel Ridge and Rock Wren.

After sitting in …. [Continue reading]

Lemmon

This is the ride I’ve been searching for on Mt. Lemmon for years. Don’t get me wrong, Lemmon is full of mountain bike goodness, but you work for it. I’m not talking about earning your turns. Even the “shuttle” rides are no walk in the park. The earning comes from hike-a-bikes, downed trees and fighting …. [Continue reading]

Shifting

bikepacking.net is coming right along. Still much to do to improve and flesh out the site, but it’s looking good so far.

With the site launch, added to the usual TopoFusioning, the scale tipped too far towards qwerty-izing. I still got out to ride everyday, but was pretty focused otherwise. So in the last few …. [Continue reading]

bikepacking.net launched!

I’ve started a new site, bikepacking.net, about a subject that I’m more than a little bit passionate about.

Traveling by bike is such an incredible way to see the world. But day rides can only take you so far. Once you figure out how to be ~comfortable sleeping out on the bike, a new …. [Continue reading]

Plenty of good things going on…

Riding back through the University today I saw the longest line of bike commuters I’ve ever seen in Tucson. True, it was ~9am. True, the temps have dropped lately. But still, it was an awesome sight — a constant stream of cyclists all the way from Campbell to Treat.

Blind Pilot West Coast …. [Continue reading]

SLC

After the CDT trip I spent a few days in SLC, visiting the family and getting out for a few rides.

That’s my dad, arcing a turn on the shoreline trail. In the background is “Hero hill”, one of my all time favorite climbs. We challenged it that day, but both my brother …. [Continue reading]
