To the treeees!

What’s a poor Tucson couple to do when it’s 100 degrees and you’re too lazy to wake up early to ride/run?

Head to the trees, of course! Like winter dwellers flee to the desert in the winter, we flee to the forest in the summer.

With the rest of Tucson, so it seemed. It’s not supposed to be consistently 100 in May, and I think everyone had the same idea.

Once on the trail, of course, it was near empty. Saw zero cyclists and just a handful of hikers near the trailheads.

A bit of dirt road coming down from Biggie’s towers.

Swiiiiitchbacks!

Paula on foot, self on bike and two dueling cameras!

Totally rad.

If you’re “in” for the AZT 300 next year, you might be riding trail like this:

instead of this:

Yup. Oracle Ridge might get the axe, replaced by sweetalicious forest singletrack (and other things, of course).

Through the monsoon sized culvert we go…

Finding our way to some techy delights…

Ice cold water was sought in crowded Summerhaven. Paula turned off to head back (~14 miles was enough of a run for her!). I pedaled on up the mountain for some Aspen Draw / Meadow action.

I miss the forest. Forest is good.

After I got back we had a bit of a picnic, scarfing down sandwiches from Subway and other goodies we brought with. Then it was time to descend back home on a surprisingly empty road.

It is looking like the 100’s are here to stay. That window for the reverse AZT 300 really was the last chance. For now I’m enjoying the heat, knowing that we have an escape plan once Paula is done with the school year…

  • We have forest, moss, lots of green things, and cats for you and Paula to hang with in Oregon… come on! Computers is good.

  • You two should escape to the forests and hills here in Evergreen, CO — with Ed and I!!! We’d love to have you! It’s not been in the 80’s in Evergreen yet. Super sweet weather, and the trails aren’t dusty dry yet.

Lovely pix and post! Thanks for sharing!
