TopoFusion Anouncements / Terraserver, no B/W aerials in some states
« on: March 25, 2010, 08:50:53 AM »
Still the same this AM.  Topos are fine, B/W aerials in some areas (east coast from what I can tell) are not coming in.

TopoFusion Anouncements / Re: Terraserver outage
« on: March 24, 2010, 09:43:20 PM »
It seems that the outage is limited to black and white aerials, and only in some areas of the country.

I expect a return to normal conditions sometime tomorrow.

TopoFusion Anouncements / Re: Terraserver down
« on: March 24, 2010, 01:56:56 PM »
Looks like we have maps again.  I did get an error when accessing the server from the web interface, so we will keep checking to make sure its stable.

854
Right now Terraserver/MSRMaps is not serving any tiles.  Will check back in on this issue once the server is up.

Terraserver is also known as MSRMaps, and it appears to be giving "too busy" messages this morning (3/24/10).  This is likely just maintenance and should be a short downtime.

We'll keep updating this thread here.  Thanks for the patience.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: How Does TopoFusion Compute Distance?
« on: March 22, 2010, 08:32:15 AM »
TF does indeed compute its own distances -- it does not rely on any number in the file or from a GPS.

In your example it is likely some other portion of your friend's track is longer than yours, able to compensate for your straight line and more.  In general 1/10 of a mile is well below the precision of a GPS track's ability to measure distance on a trail.  So I am not surprised.

I can look at the files if you want, but if you compare them up close you'll probably see that his track adds in some distance elsewhere, perhaps simply by recording more points (higher sampling rate?)

857
I am not seeing any problems with B/W aerials.  Got a coordinate (or city, state) for where you are looking?

TopoFusion Pro / Re: How to reverse a track
« on: March 19, 2010, 08:56:35 AM »
Well, you can reverse the track by using the 'merge tracks' tool on the tool bar.  Just select it, then right click somewhere in the map and choose reverse.  Then save it out by right clicking again.

But, the time stamps will be going back in time, and I don't think the Edge will accept that.  Most likely when you try to upload TopoFusion will create fabricated timestamps for you, at a constant speed.

There are tools out there to fabricate timestamps in a little more controlled fashion, but I don't know of way to reverse and maintain timestamps.

Beta Testing / Re: 3.971 Beta - server fixes
« on: March 18, 2010, 10:07:43 AM »
Now a full release, there is no need to update to the "full" 3.971 if you have already installed this beta.  They are the same.

Thanks everyone.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Making A Route, And Sending It To GPS Unit
« on: March 18, 2010, 10:06:31 AM »
A track is just a breadcrumb trail, and route is a series of waypoints.  It does not have as much detail.  I almost never use routes for navigating in the backcountry -- almost exclusively tracks.

Here is a nice tutorial on the difference:

http://gpstracklog.com/2010/03/handheld-gps-101-routes-vs-tracks.html

862
Just a note, v3.971 with the fix for both of these issues is released in full and demo forms.  There is no difference between it and the 3.971 beta, so if you already installed the beta, there is no need to download/install again.

Thanks!

We've released version v3.971 of TopoFusion Pro today.  A server change has made previous version of TopoFusion Pro unable to download color aerial maps for many states.  This release corrects that problem, as well as a minor issue with Topo maps from Terraserver (now named MSRMaps).

The good news is that with this release we have also managed to increase the coverage area for color aerials.  TopoFusion now can download maps for all of the lower 48 states (plus Alaska).  There are still a few gaps in coverage within a small number of states (see updated coverage map above).

Head over to the Download Page to try TopoFusion out, free of charge.

Beta Testing / 3.971 Beta - server fixes
« on: March 17, 2010, 10:48:46 AM »
3.971 beta is out with fixes for color aerials and topos in some states in the US.

This should go to public release very soon since the server issues do not seem to be resolving themselves.  Also, the color aerial coverage has been expanded to include all lower 48 states + Alaska.

Changelog:

Quote
3.971 - [3/17/10]  (Beta)

Changed access method for Color Aerial servers
 *  Previous versions are having issues downloading color aerials for many states
Color aerial coverage is now complete for lower 48 states + Alaska
 *  Added KS, SD, IL, AR, MI and MO
Added fix for missing tiles from Teraserver / MSRMaps
 *  (currently an issue in some states)
Added "correct map offset" preset for Custer South Dakota aerials

Any issues, please report here or drop us an email.  Thanks!!!!

Hi,

Unfortunately I don't have much experience with the Nuvi models.  Sounds like they cannot deal with tracks at all.  If you make sure your route is less than 500 or 250 points (you may need to experiment to find the limit) you could try the "upload as route" option in TopoFusion's GPS transfer dialog.

That will make a series of waypoints out of your tracklog.  I'm guessing that may be a solution.

Let us know if it works or not.  Thanks.

867
Server issues are continuing.

However, we have a new beta available with fixes for both server issues.  Additionally, we have added color aerial coverage for several states, which brings us up to full coverage for the lower 48.

Right now the beta is only available to registered users (contact me if you do not have the beta download link), but we anticipate releasing this version to the public ASAP, most likely by the end of the day.

Thanks again for the patience.

Missing tiles should be a thing of the past from terraserver, as well.  Please let me know if you notice any issues.

I believe I have a fix for the color aerials, and am working on something for topos.  Hopefully will have it available in beta later today.

870
I am seeing better behavior from Terraserver / MSRMaps (Topo Maps in TopoFusion), but tiles are still failing to come in using TopoFusion itself.  I think this means they are fixing it.

No improvement on most color aerials for most states.

871
Monday AM Update:  Both servers are still exhibiting the same issues.  Stay tuned.

Yep, I was in Sedona to do the 'race', which turned into more of a 'can you cross the super deep creek' event than a pedaling contest.  Still had a great ride, putting in about 50 miles.

I was at BCT on Sunday, too, but Chad and I got there late and decided to go south on the trail to check out how deep the river was (totally unsafe to cross, IMO!).

TopoFusion Anouncements / Server issues - Color Aerial and some Topos
« on: March 14, 2010, 08:32:58 PM »
Hi,

Sorry to inform you that several of the servers TopoFusion uses to download maps are having issues right now.

1. Some areas of Topo maps are displaying intermittent missing tiles.

2. Color aerials for most of the US are not downloading at all.

Both are due to temporary server outages.  We will be monitoring the situation and will post updates here.

Thanks for the patience.

875
The error message with the color aerials is:

Error: [ERR0134] Requested Service is not available.

That also sounds like a temporary outage.  Unfortunately it seems to be affecting almost all color aerial downloads.  I am not seeing any indication of a server change yet.  Will look into it more and post if we learn anything.

876
The issue with the topos is showing on Terraserver (now MSR maps) as well:

http://msrmaps.com/image.aspx?T=2&S=14&Z=13&X=129&Y=1332&W=1&qs=|salida|co|

It is likely temporary, though we will continue to monitor and update.

877
You are right.  Funny, in AZ Topo 4M tiles are coming in fast and 100% coverage.  I am seeing the missing tiles south of Monarch though.

878
Hi guys,

Sorry for the late response -- I was out of town riding/camping this weekend.

I can confirm there is a server issue for most color aerials.  Topo maps are downloading just fine.  Perhaps that was just a temporary server hiccup?

I will investigate the color aerial issue and post back when I know more.  Thanks for the reports and the patience.

879
Definitely update to the latest version -- 3.97.  Soon after 3.85 there were some major changes to the batch download tool that have eliminated the issues you are describing.

Check the revision history for the details:

Note changes starting with 3.87.

Sorry, my mistake.  I forgot that SD fell off one of the servers, along with Kansas, a few months ago.  I need to update the color coverage list to reflect that.

I'll have a look to see if it might be back, and check the other servers.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Correct Map Offset
« on: March 11, 2010, 10:45:08 AM »
Heh, big brother.  It's not so much about permission as it is that I wanted to collect people's offsets so that they'd be in the program and other people wouldn't need to figure them out.

Thanks for the numbers.

No urban in SD, but have you tried the color tileset?  Should be statewide color aerial coverage, more current than the B/W stuff.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Avg Power From Run Analysis
« on: March 10, 2010, 10:12:38 AM »
On some mountain roads the elevation correction can make the gain go up.  E.G. heavily cut in roads, or if the road ride goes across a lot of bridges -- it will give you credit for dropping into the canyon and climbing back out.

So, the elevation correction is a lot more reliable for trails than (major paved) roads.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Avg Power From Run Analysis
« on: March 09, 2010, 07:37:51 PM »
Yes, the calories would be off if you fed a bike ride into "run analysis."

There is a lot TF can do for bike riders!  I'm one.  :)  No software can compute power numbers for a bike ride based on a GPS track, though.  It's just not possible.

But if someone does have a power meter, there is a bunch of stuff TF can do with that power data.  It's just not in "run analysis."  Read this page for more about using power in TF:

http://topofusion.com/power.php

And of course all the other cycling related functions...

886
TopoFusion Pro / Re: Avg Power From Run Analysis
« on: March 09, 2010, 10:52:12 AM »
I can take a look at your file, but I just want to make sure you know that Run Analysis tools are for  foot running.  If you plug a bike ride into it, you will get impossibly high power numbers because it is assuming you ran that fast.

As for the gain, I looked at the file and 4200 seems reasonable for that ride.  You are right that it goes up when corrected.  Not sure why right now.

In general it is not possible to accurate generate power numbers for bike riding, after the fact.  The problem?  Coasting.

With running (or horse riding) there is no coasting -- you are always doing work if moving.  Not so on a bike.  So equations for run/horse do not apply to bicycling.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Just Updated From Earlier Version...

How old of a version was your previous install?  Could be a conflict between the installers if you were using a several years old version of TF before.

Otherwise, how far does TF get in opening?  Splash screen?  Main window up?  There is a link to the TF diagnositic file in the TF program group.  Any clues there?  (feel free to email or post the file here).

Thanks.

TopoFusion Anouncements / Pro Version 3.97 Released
« on: February 02, 2010, 11:41:25 AM »

Being a small software company, we here at TopoFusion have always prided ourselves on being able to listen to our customers and help grow the program to meet their needs.  Many of our most notable features were dreamed up to serve our diverse user base.

The latest revision of TopoFusion Pro is no exception.  This version includes a long list of improvements, fixes and tweaks, almost purely by user request.  A few examples: UTM grids on color aerials, new aerials for Florida and Puerto Rico, sub-second GPX support and man/dog distance for search and rescue purposes.

As always, if you've got something you'd like TopoFusion do to for you, we'd love to hear from you.

This is a good idea, and one a couple people have requested as well.  I will think about the best way to do it, but it does seem like it'd be very useful to be able to select non rectangular areas -- maximize the 100 tiles.

Thanks.

Feature Requests / Re: master checkbox for files
« on: January 31, 2010, 09:02:31 AM »
Hi,

Have you tried the toggles on the toolbar that turn off display of all waypoints or all tracks?  Maybe that is enough flexibility for you?  A master toggle for both might make sense but it also may confuse the issue a little bit.

Let me know what you think and thanks for the feedback.

Now 3.962 with a couple more fixes.  This version will go public as soon as I get back from the weekend's trip.  Then it's on to more new stuff.

3.962 – [1/27/09]  (Beta)

Improved type checking and bounds checking for simplify / split dialog
Fixed bug in cut tracks tool preventing certain segments from being deleted
Fixed problem uploading split GPS tracks that have a ‘file properties’ name
(only one of the tracks was showing up)
Fixed crash with simplifying then splining a track

Thanks.

Yep, didn't take it as critical.  Your experience is always well appreciated.  I can't take all input into account of course, but I really do like to understand when people expect the software to work a different way than it does.

Gets me to think if nothing else.
