I admit it. I shuttled Green Mountain today.
That’s right, I climbed 1000 feet more than I descended. So it was a reverse shuttle, something rarely seen.
Odin, Hottie and I started out at the Molino Canyon Overlook heading for Molino Basin (west) trail. We starting climbing the torched trail, Hottie running faster in front …. [Continue reading]
My commuter/basket bike is still stranded at Hottie’s school (14 miles away), so I’ve been riding my chameleon to school like a schmuck. I attemped to ride the flying dutchman one day but was nearly flattened for lack of braking power.
So today I decided to justify looking like an idiot on campus by …. [Continue reading]
A cool morning and a simple goal: ride. Not so simple when you live in Tucson.
My malaise and general fatigue from the summer is slowly wearing off, so I went out for a suburban assault ride. 20 minutes into it my rear tire went flat.
As I changed it, I watched the ‘little …. [Continue reading]
We have returned from the summer season in North Fork, working for the Salmon-Challis National Forest. As expected, the summer was incredible but short-lived.
We completed the inventory in the Bighorn Crags. We now have visited nearly all of the 70-some lakes as well as the Crag’s high point, Mt. McGuire.
Our last hitch …. [Continue reading]
Pioneer Day
Our second hitch is complete. We are now in the process of readjusting to ‘normal’ life. The 8 days in the field went too quickly.
We started with a group of 13 (leave no trace) and ended with 4. After the big wigs and jokers left things improved rapidly. Everyone and their dog …. [Continue reading]

Another morning at the bunkhouse and another ride. We headed to Twin Creek campground and parked admist the remnants of last night’s fire camp (trash, mainly). Out on highway 93 things were chilly, but the morning was fresh and it felt great. As we climbed towards Lost Trail Pass we watched a helicopter make …. [Continue reading]

While we were qwerty-ing at the Ranger Station a woman came into the office and asked if we were working. I responded, ‘no’ and then she asked if we wanted to work. ‘On what?’ I asked. She needed someone to drive to a campground to deliver a message to the fire crew. She said …. [Continue reading]

Today’s ride exceeded all expectations, though our expectations were admittedly very low. We started at Twin Creek campground and rode up 93 to Lost Trail Pass. Despite being Saturday we were not passed by many cars and there was actually a shoulder. Near the top an old couple …. [Continue reading]

Upon recommendation of a fellow Forest Service employee, we investigated a trail known as ‘Carl Gulch.’ This ride starts at the back of our living quarters (the ‘bunkhouse’), so if it was any good it would become our staple ride.
From the start things were not good. We lost the trail as soon …. [Continue reading]

We spent the day at the Ranger Station–mostly wasting time. We eventually got on a computer and got TopoFusion working. It was a bit of a trial.
The best part of the day was spending over an hour filling out our timecards. It was nothing but hilarious. I was laughing because I came …. [Continue reading]

We just got off our first ‘hitch’ here in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. Our mission was simple: GPS all of the system trails. We started a day late and finished a day early. I hiked (backpack and day-hike) some 75 miles in 5 days. TopoFusion claims 20,000 …. [Continue reading]
We’re off to Frank Church for a summer of backpacking and mapping trails for the forest service. We’ll be checking email at least weekly, so our responses won’t be nearly as quick.
There are a couple of known issues in the current release of TopoFusion:
1 – There is a major bug in the network …. [Continue reading]
Just got back from a short backpacking trip to the Chiricahua Mountains. The warmup for Frank Church continues, and this was a very good trip.
The thing that struck me most was how easy the trails were to hike on, even with packs. I guess I’ve been doing too many hikes in the front range …. [Continue reading]
Trip 2.
First ride – short one between boy scout camps and then the traditional ‘warmup ride.’
Next day – Did a shortened version of the loop I cut my face open on (avoiding the lower section of trail where I crashed, though it isn’t tough). This time the temps were a bit cooler and …. [Continue reading]
6/13/03 – Went out with an equestrian to GPS a local trail in the Tucson mountains. The trail was spectacular (for a local, outskirts trail) and seems to lead right into Saguaro National Park, or possibly a small part of TMP. I got it on GPS and have it available for Steve A.
It …. [Continue reading]
Today we completed a smaller version of a loop I’ve been waiting to do again for over a year now: Oracle Ridge Trail #1.
The upper 2.5 miles are still closed due to the Bullock fire. But this meant the opportunity to try out the eastern approach to Dan Saddle through the mining roads.
Samaniego Ridge – Trail work and ride – 6/8/03
Map and Pictures from the ride
Sunday was the Sonoran Desert Mountain Bicyclists’ trail work and group ride on Samaniego ridge. I was the ride leader and was pleasantly surprised that there seemed to be significant interest. I needed all the people I could get to …. [Continue reading]
Today we spent out on the closed and burned Green Mountain trail. A group of 12 was out to help reopen this incredible trail.
The work was fun and a stark contrast to working on desert trails. I spent the first part searching and hauling large rocks while others of the crew sent giant ones …. [Continue reading]
We’re back from our trip to an Arizona Sky Island. The temperatures were cool–even cold at night. The riding was even cooler–spectacular in fact.
We went for a short, ~2 hour ride in the evening upon our arrival. No one else was out there.
The next morning we got off early and headed …. [Continue reading]
We’re off for a few days of camping and riding in the Sky Islands of Southern Arizona.
We should return either Wednesday or Thursday when we’ll be able to respond to email again. Thanks.
