TopoFusion Pro / Re: Open Aerial
« on: April 27, 2012, 01:35:13 PM »
The server is returning invalid tiles, so there's not much I can do on TF's side.  Hopefully it will be a short outage.  In the meantime, how about the Color Aerial tileset?

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Track/Waypoint elevation shading
« on: April 26, 2012, 07:58:39 PM »
Hi,

You're right, the track shading is based on the min/max elevation of all tracks loaded.  Simple solution - hit CTRL-A and then right click to disable them all.  Then turn on only your temperature track.

I do plan to allow manual setting of the ranges for shading, but it's not there yet.

I'm not sure how you would shade waypoints, or what useful effect it might have.  Shade the color of the font for the waypoint text being displayed, perhaps?  I suppose it could be interesting with enough waypoints.  Maybe you can describe more what you want to do with it.

Thanks.

I am seeing the same thing Roger.  Only the highest resolution set is having issues -- the other ones are loading very quickly.

I'll try it again tomorrow and look into it further if it's not back up.  Thanks.

I have a printing question too. Is there a way of selecting an area to print or is it printed just from what is on the screen?

No, sorry, the only way is to print what is shown on the screen currently.

TopoFusion Anouncements / Terraserver (MSRMaps) shutting down May 1st
« on: April 24, 2012, 03:33:33 PM »

Terraserver gives TopoFusion its base "topo" and B/W Aerial tilesets.  After May 1, copies of TopoFusion will no longer be able to pull new tiles for either of these tilesets.  Might be time to do some batch downloading!

Here is the official announcement:

http://msrmaps.com/About.aspx?n=AboutShutdown

Fortunately we still have great tilesets like MyTopo, Open Cycle Map, Color Aerials, Open Aerial, Canadian Topo's, etc.

Hey Roger,

I just pulled some fresh Open Aerial tiles near Patagonia Lake.  Are you still having issues?  Might have just been a server glitch.

Let me know

Strange, it was just a bit of a formatting issue. I think it's TF problem (should be a valid file).

Try this one, it's just a slightly edited version of the "a" file.

GPS, Trails, Training / Re: Saved tracks showing - eTrex Legend HCx
« on: April 10, 2012, 08:49:34 PM »
Hey Tom,

It sure sounds like you are doing everything right.  It should function just as you expect -- make sure the saved tracks are checked for "show on map" (they should by default), and they should be on the main map screen.  It's almost always that easy.

I'm trying to think of anything that could be goofing you up, but can't come up with much.  Topo maps should be fine... the fact that your active log is not being shown is a little troubling for sure.  I'd check your track setup page to make sure nothing is goofy there (recording auto, most often, and showing lots of points).

I'd say you are probably to the point of doing a firmware update if it isn't the most recent, or doing a hard reset if it isn't.

Hope that helps a bit, let me know how it goes.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Terraserver shutting down May 1
« on: April 07, 2012, 08:59:35 AM »
Thanks for the post.  This does indeed mean that the base Topo and B/W aerial tilesets in TopoFusion will be going away.  Better get out there and download and tiles you want/need!

I'll do a new version that still allows access to existing tiles, but makes it so they no longer try to download, with an appropriate message.

Terraserver was a key component in starting TopoFusion and we were very fortunate to be able to use their maps for so long.  Luckily myTopo maps are so much better, and many of the other tilesets have superseded the B/W aerials since then, so the future of TF still looks bright!

I believe there is a bug in the shapefile routine, introduced in the latest version.  I get it figured out and a new version out next week.

That's a fair point.  There isn't a way to force it to feet, but maybe there should be.  Maybe just a different tool mode for measuring distance.  Or would increasing the number of decimal places reported work?

Howdy all,

Today I upgraded to the next major version (2.0) of SMF software, and also loaded up a new theme to give it a fresh look.  All the old posts and accounts were transferred over, so it should be pretty seamless.

My hope is that the new version's better spam fighting features will keep the forum free of all the bot-posted garbage that I have been struggling to keep in check.

We will see how it goes.  Please let me know, either in this thread or by email / PM if you notice any issues.

Thanks a lot!

That's what is shows -- federal boundaries such as forest service, blm, etc.

Unfortunately the service we were using seems to have gone away.  There is a BLM only one that can be used instead, but it's not nearly as useful.

I will take another look at it soon.

375, must be the Stagecoach.  ;)

What I would do is just load the whole thing on there, then in case you're feeling frisky you can do more...

Seriously it's just as easy to get the whole thing as it is to get parts.  This should help:

http://topofusion.com/tutorials/uploading-tracks.php

If you cut out one piece you'll just need to delete everything else (right click on the track in the map and choose "delete segment"), then save out to a new file, and follow the same tutorial as above.

Hope that helps.  Have fun out there.

TopoFusion Basic / Re: Etrex 30 question
« on: March 01, 2012, 09:10:43 AM »
No need for a memory card -- the units internal memory will be enough for maps and GPX tracks for both events.

The limitation on the TF maps is a software imposed one (by Garmin), so as not to compete with their other products.

TopoFusion Basic / Re: Etrex 30 question

Hi there,

There are a few options to get maps on your GPS.  One is within TopoFusion itself, using the "File->Export View" tool to send maps from TF as .kmz files. Here is a tutorial on how to do that:

http://topofusion.com/garmin-custom-maps.php

The other is vector basemaps, which you need to upload with Garmin's (free) Mapsource app.  The app is free but the maps are not, if you get them from Garmin.  There's a 2008 Topo USA dvd you can get that covers the country, or alternatively there are some free options that take a little bit of work, but are quite detailed.  Some info about that here:

http://www.topofusion.com/forum/index.php?topic=3796.0

Hope that helps.

Not sure if you'll have enough capacity to upload full res maps for the Allegheny route via TopoFusion's .kmz maps, but it's worth a shot.

I'd also like to take the time to say I really enjoy Topofusion.  It is far and away my favorite GPS app.  So thanks for the hard work you've put into it Scott.

Cheers, thanks for the kudos.  I still really enjoy working on and maintaining TopoFusion, even after all these years.  Just need a copy of me to do half of what I'd like to with it.

Forum is probably the best place for bug reports.  Never have set up a formal bug tracking system.

Hey guys,

I just pushed out v4.41 with the Open Cycle Map fix.  You can use the "reload maps" tool on the tool bar to point click and force reload any tiles giving the "configuration" message -- with v4.41 they should load in as the actual map tiles.

Thanks for the patience, and if you notice any issues with the new version, please do let me know!

Looks like the server used in the KML that sanewcomb provided above isn't up any more.  TF can't get land ownership tiles currently.  It's been down for almost a week now, I believe, leading me to think it may have gone away.

Steve, do you remember where you got that .kml file?

Thanks.

TopoFusion Anouncements / TopoFusion basic v4.4 - major update
« on: February 06, 2012, 09:13:46 PM »

Lee Blackwell, Gila River Country, Arizona

TopoFusion Basic has received a major overhaul and now joins the same codebase as TopoFusion Pro.  It's a slimmer, more easy to use version of our Pro software with some of the advanced features disabled.  The old version of TopoFusion Basic (v2.975) is now known as TopoFusion Legacy, since it still runs well on older version of windows (95/98).

Any users of TF Basic should update to get a host of new imagery and other updates found in the Pro codebase.  We're confident that the new Basic product will suit many of our users, while the Pro version is the flagship product with all the bells and whistles.

TF Legacy will remain available to license holders of both the Pro and Basic versions, and also in demo form.

See all details here:

http://www.topofusion.com/news/2012/02/01/topofusion-basic-version-4-4-released-major-update/

Hey guys, sorry for missing this one on the first go-round.  I have been slammed with computer work lately.

It's a change that I had to make in TF itself -- just wish I had done it last week before releasing a new version.  I'll have a beta out soon with the fix.

I thought I had been using open cycle maps and it was working... but everywhere I looked must have been cached.

I haven't looked for some time, but IIRC the license doesn't allow it.  But it is worth another investigation.  Thanks.

433
Most of the maps in TF (as of the current version) have no restrictions for duplication (even for commercial purposes).

EXCEPTIONS:

myTopo - no duplication is allowed, even non-commercial.
Open street maps (and all derivatives) - License is cc-by-sa: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/

Hope that helps.

Hi,

Yeah, as you discovered, many of the map types are only available in the US.  Check the list here:

http://www.topofusion.com/features.php#imagery

Each has a "coverage" line telling you what is supported.

MyTopo, open street maps, open cycle map and landsat are a few that are good in Canada.

Hope that helps.

Hi,

Sorry about the issue -- it seems like some photofusion code is getting into your KML.  Can you attach your file (if small enough) or email it to smorris@topofusion.com ?  I'll take a look.

You must have some waypoints in there somewhere.

Feature Requests / Re: User Maps -- a couple ideas
« on: December 10, 2011, 06:40:37 PM »
Thanks for the comment.  You can in effect rotate a user map in any direction, you just need to use three calibration points rather than two.  If you point click the third point just about any kind of transformation including all angles of rotation are possible.  However, it might be nice to just have a rotate tool for a map, to ease the calibration process.

Regarding a white space... I like that idea.  With jpeg artifacts it won't work quite so well in practice, but it is worth a shot.  Thanks.

Wow, that is hard to believe.  Can you send me a current.gpx with heart rate data in it, by any chance?  I'll take a look.

No dashes!  It's unreadable that way.... (at least in my opinion).  What's the reason to omit them, brevity?

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Garmin eTrex 30 & HR Data??
« on: December 04, 2011, 07:23:04 PM »
Hi Geoff,

That's odd -- I would think the data would be there just as it is in other units, such as the Dakota.  I have an eTrex 20, unfortunately, which I purchased before I realized it didn't support HR.  So are you copying/opening the Current.gpx file from your 30?  And TF opens that file with HR just fine?  That's strange because that's all TF does, is open that file.

Let me know.  I'll probably be selling my 20 and getting a 30, but not immediately.

Thanks.

Feature Requests / Re: Multiplexing?
« on: December 04, 2011, 07:15:52 PM »
Hi,

Sorry about the (now deleted) spam, but at least it got me to look the thread again.  Averaging is definitely something we are keen on investigating and improving in the network feature and perhaps just in general.  It's a bit of a tricky problem, especially on winding trails (e.g. switchbacks).

You're right that the network function right now will average in your backtracks.  It's goal is to come up with the best representation of the network, so it treats backtracking as simply more information on the same segment.

A function to average tracks, given that they traveled the same ground at the same time, might be something fun to work on, but it's a bit specialized and probably not that wide of an audience.  I'll put it on the list, though.  We are going to be revisiting the averaging issue soon.

Thanks for the post.

Hi there,

First, sorry about the issues.  Second, we can sure do a refund if you are frustrated with it and think that something is amiss. No problem.  It sounds like something that could be taken care by uninstalling and maybe removing anything else TopoFusion was conflicting with (sometimes windows installer is just goofy, but from what I can tell it is no fault of TF's). Or, it may be an
issue with a driver such as your graphics card driver. Updating to the latest version on that would be a good first step to diagnosing the issue.

But I totally understand if you just want to give up on it.  Refund is no problem.  Or we can try to figure out what's up with it.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Backup of User Map Calibration Data?
« on: November 21, 2011, 08:52:31 PM »
Bob,

I think you've got all the parameters correct, so it is strange you are seeing a difference that is significant.  One possibility is a difference in the datum of the lat/lon coords?  For TF they should be WGS84 (same as GPX).

Other thing I might suggest if you haven't already is to wipe out any UserXXXX values in the .ini file so you start with a clean slate.

Let me know if neither of those ideas help.  Good luck.

445
TopoFusion Pro / Re: Backup of User Map Calibration Data?
« on: November 13, 2011, 10:18:53 PM »
Hi Bob,

The calibration values are actually in the main TopoFusion.ini file.  That may, unfortunately, mean that the correct values are gone.  TF really needs a file type for calibration info that can go with the map... or perhaps adopt one that other software use.

If you've had that user map for a while it's possible you might have the old value in an old .ini file, but you probably wouldn't have thought to back it up.  It should be here:

C:\Documents and Settings\*Your USER NAME*\Local Settings\Application Data\TopoFusion\TopoFusion.ini

Or for older installs:

C:\Program Files\TopoFusion\TopoFusion.ini

Let me know if you need help finding the info in an old .ini.

Yeah, you may need to restart TF after expiring all the tiles -- there may be some in the video card's memory cache that didn't get cleared out.  If you restart it'll definitely go back to square one.

Thanks for the feedback!
