TopoFusion Anouncements / v3.20 Released!
« on: January 09, 2008, 09:45:59 PM »
TopoFusion Pro version 3.20 was released today.

Two new map servers have been added to the available imagery in TopoFusion:

1 - Canadian Topo Maps
2 - TIGER street data for the United States

For other additions see the revision history:

http://topofusion.com/revhistory.php

We also put together a fun page showing the history of the TF splash screen:

http://topofusion.com/splash.php

For registered users, remember that you can get both your name/code and the download URL by requesting an automated "lost code" from:

http://topofusion.com/lostcode.php

(Recall that the demo version cannot be registered)

Thanks!

Feature Requests / Tile management
« on: January 07, 2008, 12:32:44 PM »
Hi,

Thanks for the feedback - it's much appreciated.

First - there is already a tool to load tiles in a boxed area.  It's the "reload / load maps tool" on the toolbar.

Make sure only the tilesets you want are activated/visible in options->preferences->tilesets, then draw a box.  It might take a while to get all 2M for SoCal - that's a lot of maps.  But 4M, or 16M might be possible.

I really like the idea of a "mode" within TF that shows you where you have maps downloaded.  I'll think about how to add this.  It would be nice to visually understand where you have maps and where you don't.  It does get kinda tricky with all the different types of maps and resolutions, though.

Right now you can't delete areas of the map from the cache, but this has become more possible in recent versions, due to consistent tile size.  It's an addition I'd like to see too.

If you have a suggested app that TF might be able to export maps for, let us know.  I've been in the 'backup plan' mode, w/o internet access myself a few times, so I know what you mean.  Right now you can export a jpg with a worldfile that some software should be able to load and correctly georeference.

Thanks.

No, you don't need a GPS plugged in for it to start.  And your system specs are fine.

Look in, and/or email your TopoFusion.log file (c:\program files\topofusion) to support@topofusion.com.  There should be some indication of what's going wrong in there.

Possibly something to do with graphics card drivers or directx.

Feature Requests / APRS Functionality
« on: January 02, 2008, 09:15:45 AM »
Well, we do love being loved!

I'll follow up with my SAR contact who had offered to provide equipment for testing.  That's the biggest holdup so far - no APRS to test/develop with.  Though it may be possible to develop with out equipment, it'd sure be more fun with it.

Thanks.

Beta Testing / New maps!  Beta 3.20
« on: January 02, 2008, 09:06:38 AM »
Brian -

Thanks for the screen grab.  The tiger maps are definitely off there for the roads.  It's strange because the State Route is right on (I can see it toggling with aerials also), but clearly the smaller roads in the area are not right.

Guess there's not much we can do about that.  It's the first time I've seen errors like that.  I'm glad to know about it, though.  So, thanks again for reporting it.

We're always on the lookout for more servers with the appropriate terms of use such that TF can use them.  I'd love to get better coverage outside North America.

Beta Testing / Sprite File Doesn't Work
« on: January 01, 2008, 06:53:03 PM »
Yep, that's a bug.  Seems like this one got caused before and I fixed it.

In any case, try downloading 3.20 again.  It has the fix, as well as a new splash screen.  Still v3.20, though.

Thanks for reporting the bug!

Archived Support / Error loading user map???
« on: January 01, 2008, 09:15:52 AM »
It's pretty easy to remove all user maps when you are done.  Just open up the dialog and hit "Remove Map" on each one.  Or, simply uncheck them - and they will no longer be loaded when you start the program.  You can then delete the files w/o any error messages popping up.

Beta Testing / New maps!  Beta 3.20
« on: December 31, 2007, 08:44:55 AM »
Thanks for the positive report.

I imagine a setting (probably in the "image processing" dialog) where you choose which two tilesets you want to combo.

Some possibilities:

bw/topo  (default)
bw/tiger
bw/color ?
color/topo
color/tiger
topo/tiger ?
landsat/can topo

So you'd like the "a" key to continue to work as is, cycling between topo, aerial and combo (with bw/topo)?  That might cause a bit of a hassle, but I'll think about it.

« on: December 31, 2007, 08:38:54 AM »
I remember someone mentioning it - the boxes turn more into "L's".  Actually I am seeing this problem on my machine right now under XP.  So I should be able to fix it.

Or is it worse than that?  Can you post a screengrab so I can take a look.  Thanks.

Archived Support / Screen contrast changes
« on: December 31, 2007, 08:36:34 AM »
This sounds like a little different problem.  The issue that was fixed here had to do with the contrast changing while TF was open and a sub-window was opened.

Affecting the video card's setting is a different issue that at least one other user has raised, I believe under Vista.  We haven't been able to diagnose it, however.

I will have to install Vista on a machine to do some testing of this and the other issue you raised.

Thanks.

Beta Testing / New maps!  Beta 3.20
« on: December 30, 2007, 11:55:39 AM »
Beta v3.20 is out.  Here are examples of the two new map types added:

Canadian Topos:

Coverage is all of Canada, though I understand some areas may not have the highest (0.003 degrees per 512x512 tile) detail.  I haven't seen any of these areas, but I don't have a large collection of data up north either.

Regardless, these are pretty nice maps.  The server is a little slower than most of the other servers TF uses.  But for folks in CAN, this is a great addition.

TIGER

This sever is quite fast.  However, it is somewhat old (1998) census data.  In many cases the roads are more up-to-date than the USGS topo maps from Terraserver.  Still, these are not has high quality as, say, Google Maps or the like.  However, they are free, public domain (you can publish/sell maps with them), and I've already found them very useful for a few projects.

The coverage is US only, and you only get street names when zoomed in to the 4 meter tileset.

I should also note that the projection on the maps is not perfect.  I had to do a few hacks to reproject the image, and it is not perfect.  You may notice some errors and misalignments between image tiles.  Some are unavoidable (the brown county boundaries, for example tend to go crazy).  But if you notice anything strange, especially roads not at all lining up, please post an example here with coordinates.

Like I said, they aren't perfect, but for free it's hard to complain.  A major benefit I've seen (besides getting street names) is for overview (large scale) maps.  The TIGER maps are much less "busy" than the topos.

There's good potential for doing combo maps with TIGER/aerial and TIGER/color aerial.  Also, CAN Topo and Landsat (both are in  geographic or lat/lon project, so they can be combined easily).  Look for more combo options in a future version.

As usual, errors, comments and suggestions post here or email us!

Thanks.

« on: December 05, 2007, 09:38:43 AM »
It is a Terraserver problem, yep.  You can use "Window->Correct Map Offset" to nudge any particular tileset in X and Y.

If you find a setting that works for Yosemite, I'd love to add it to the program.  IIRC, that area is quite messed up, meaning multiple, different, offsets may be required.

Let us know how it goes.

Feature Requests / Garmin Edge 305
« on: December 03, 2007, 12:54:27 PM »
You should be able to download tracks from any of the Edge units.

The only thing that is not supported is the uploading of "Courses" which are really just tracks, but Garmin made a new protocol for it.

You are right, we need to support the course protocol, and we will.  Is there anything else that needs to be added?

Archived Support / Length of route
« on: November 28, 2007, 09:00:01 AM »
No, it's not a limitation of the demo version, it's most likely because the GPX file has too many points - depending on where you upload to there are different limitations.

The active log is 10k, but you'd need to clear it first, and make sure it doesn't get overwritten when you're out there collecting a tracklog yourself.

Best place for uploading tracks is saved tracks.  There are 20 and are 500 points each.  Right click on your track and choose simplifiy/split/splint.  Then use the split feature to cut it into 500 point chunks.  As long as it was 10k or less to begin with, the file should then all fit into the saved tracks area.

Hope that helps.

Archived - Feedback and Comments / Forum Difference
« on: November 27, 2007, 09:48:23 PM »
I guess not too much - we probably ought to close the general support forum, or move it down/out, because it's the only one that needs to be moderated.

For whatever reason, the bots only hit that forum (it has the most posts).

The original idea was that general support was for issues and problems, and feedback was for, well, ideas and such or tweaks to the program, that kind of thing.

Thanks for the kind words!  One of the benefits of our lack of advertising / marketing is that we have a small user base and are able to handle things personally.

You get answers right from the authors of the program that have been here since day 1.

We've always tried to strive for excellent customer service, so it's nice to hear when we're meeting that goal.

Thanks to you, also, for the constructive comments.  It's users like you who have helped shaped the program.

Archived Support / Trackpoint date changes in network
« on: November 19, 2007, 10:17:13 PM »
Hey - any day with a ride is a good day, so congrats are in order!

Actually, you'll find that when you save a network out, time data is not saved (that GPX file you posted does not have time stamps). This is because, largely, when you merge tracks in this way, time data doesn't make much sense.

I did make some effort to intelligently merge tracks with the network code, and the remnants of that effort may be what you are seeing (before saving / reloading).  It *should* be possible to, say, grab the average travel time across each link in the network.  But right now it's best to just ignore it, as the program does once you save the network out.

Archived Support / Understanding TF File Management
« on: November 19, 2007, 10:13:02 PM »
Right, I see what you are saying for POIs - multiple copies of the same points floating around can get too convoluted.

The other side is that some people's (raises hand) GPS data collections are growing out of control, and when single rides are tens of thousands of points, I only want a single ride displayed and/or loaded at a time.

All I mean is that there are reasons for "forcing" the one track per file (though it is not forced, just not well supported otherwise).

But your point is well taken.  We do need to better support multiple tracks / routes in a file, and part of this has to do with the interface.  It's time for an update, without a doubt.

Archived Support / DEM Accuracy
« on: November 12, 2007, 05:07:21 PM »
The resolution for DEM data in TF is 30 m.  This is the NED dataset, downloaded from NASA's onearth server.

This is a pretty standard dataset, so I'm sure you could find some accuracy numbers as far as the actual elevation goes.

Now, things are a little different when you start applying the DEM data to tracks.  Right now in TF the length of the track matters, because a DEM is downloaded to cover the extend of the entire track (this is why it zooms to fit the track).  It tends to get inaccurate with tracks over 100 miles or so.

I just wrote some code to walk the track and download higher resolution DEMs in pieces.  This was so I could generate good profiles for the 2,100 Appalacian Trail.

But we are planning to use a dedicated elevation server, where elevation requests are made per point, with the highest resolution.

Archived Support / Track Profile Smoothing
« on: November 12, 2007, 05:02:08 PM »
There's no function in TF to smooth a profile.  I don't think there's one in ExpertGPS either -- at least not the last version I tried.

It is really needed in TF though.  We are planning more DEM features for certain.

Archived Support / Files, Tracks and Track Segments
« on: November 11, 2007, 06:33:32 PM »
Thanks for the suggestions.

It may indeed be time for the file dialog to go.  And being able to open up each file (with a little + (plus) box) would be a great way to handle multiple tracks in a file.  I still think it's better to keep things in separate files, but I do run into instances where multiple does make sense.

Archived Support / UNloading Map Data
« on: November 11, 2007, 03:20:44 PM »
Right, I'm surprised no one has brought this up before, although these days disk space is pretty cheap.

There's no way (in the program) to delete downloaded maps.  You can't safely delete *some* of the .dat files either.  You can only start over fresh, which wouldn't be too bad idea since you could then use DXT1 compression for lower memory usage and faster map display.

I suppose you could imagine drawing a box over an area and asking it to remove all maps.  It's a possible feature addition.

Thanks.

Archived Support / Shapefile Questions...
« on: November 10, 2007, 10:06:07 PM »
Interesting.  It's not the number of points but the number of individual tracks that is causing the memory bloat.

I did some tightening of the structures and got it from ~400mb to ~140 mb, on my machine (with that file loaded).  We had some more or less unused structures in there for some of the more esoteric features of TF.

Thanks for posting this.  I was confused because I'd been working on a file of similar "size" but didn't see such a memory hog.

I'm guessing you've registered, and if so I can put up a beta version with the mods very soon.

I'm still working to get files like this to display faster.  Currently if you view the whole file from far away it's a little sluggish, but when only looking at part of the file, it runs well.

It's on the 'to fix' list now.

Archived Support / Understanding TF File Management

It's perhaps not the most intuitive system, it's true.  And it might be time for it to change.  Just wanted to point out that the regular "File->Open" is there.

The files in the middle are not loaded - they are just a directory list of the current directory selected on the far left.  Remove simply removes a file from being loaded - it doesn't delete it!

Your confusion is helping me to think about how it could be set up better, so it is useful.

You shouldn't get 3 files for loading one though!  And I thought the ~ issue was solved, but I have seen it pop up myself.  It probably came from double clicking on a GPX file in windows explorer?  Try using file->open and it should make more sense.

I'll have to do some thinking about updating that whole interface.

Thanks.

What do you mean that nothing happens when you do a "save as.." ?

No dialog comes up, or it doesn't save it where you ask it to save it, or?

The little lower left directory explorer starts at the default tracks directory (c:\program files\topofusion), and you can load files from anywhere in your hard drive from that, or using the "File->Open" command.

Maybe what you're missing is that all files that are loaded (showing stats in the active list) can be anywhere on your hard drive, not just in a particular directory.  All files you load will be loaded again when you restart the program.

Not sure if that helped, maybe you can clarify more about what's confusing you?

Oh - I just realized what you mean on the "save as.." not doing anything.  Maybe it's because you need to select a particular loaded file to "save as..".  This should really be grayed out if nothing is selected.  I am certain you are not the first to be confused by this.

I always right click on a file (in the stats area) and do save as... from there.

Archived Support / TF Pro 3.12 - How do I get elevations to show??
« on: November 06, 2007, 08:12:29 PM »
Hmm, selecting a precise point from the profile is a little tricky.

One thing you could do is "find" that point using the profile (2d location is displayed on the map as you move the mouse over.

Another alternative is to open up the file properties dialog, and hit the "show tracks" dialog to fill in the track list.  If you sort by elevation you can quite easily find outliers and delete them from there (right click on a particular track point to delete it).

I can think about how to do this from the profile window, though...

Archived Support / Shapefile Questions...
« on: November 06, 2007, 08:24:55 AM »
That is a rather large file (100 mb GPX file), but the main suggestion is to upgrade to v3.18.   You will notice a massive increase in speed, esp. when zoomed in on areas such that not all of the parcels are being displayed.

There was a problem in 3.12 and 3.15 that messed up the clipping code for tracks.

That memory usage does seem a little extreme.  I will take a look into it.

As far as input datum, the preferred format for all shapefiles is lat/lon.  Shape is such an archaic format that it doesn't store utm zone or projection.  WGS 84 (or NAD 84) and lat/lon make life much easier.

That said, there's an input dialog that hasn't been written in TF that should ask for the UTM zone.  Currently I believe it simply assumes the zone the map is currently centered on.

Thanks for writing in, and give 3.18 a try and see what you think.

Have you got a screenshot you can post?  It sounds similar to some of the video issues I was having on an oldish laptop with an ATI mobility card.  Squares for text and I'm fairly certain the photos didn't work either.

Make sure you have the most recent video drivers, but that wasn't enough for my laptop.  I had to go to the "omega" (third party) drivers, which were much more recent than the latest from ATI.  That solved it for me.

Let us know how it goes, otherwise you may need to stick with the Basic version.

Sorry about the downtime folks.  Our entire site was unreachable due to a machine migration by our host.  It was supposed to be seamless, but obviously it didn't turn out that way.

Any emails sent to us on Wednesday 10/24 were not received - so please resend.  You likely got a "mail returned" email telling you this.

Things are back up and running, including, finally, the forum.

Good news is the new server is faster.  The forum seems to be responding quicker.

The entire automatic purchase system works perfectly.  It was the first thing tested, and besides testing, we've already had a successful purchase of TopoFusion Pro that went through without a hitch.

Thanks for the patience.

Archived Support / Missing time stamp
« on: October 21, 2007, 07:18:07 AM »
Importing time info from shapefiles is tricky, unfortunately, because there is no standard way to store time data.  Position is well defined, but time is just an attribute that may or may not be named the same thing between shapefiles, and isn't guaranteed to hold the same format, either.

At least that's my understanding of it -- someone correct me if I'm wrong.  So, basically, TF doesn't make a huge effort to look for and convert time stamps.

If there is a standard and you want to send us a file, we'd be happy to look into getting the values read in.

TF doesn't assume one track per file in general (it handles multiple per file just fine), but you are right that certain features (like stats) do operate on the whole file.

Personally, I have so much GPS data that it only makes sense to have one trail per file.  But of course it's nice to have an entire area, (like a network generated by TF for example) and be able to manipulate it.  You can profile each track separetely to get stats.  You can also delete a single track from a file (right click on it in the map and choose "delete segment").  Also, if you use the 'show points' button to fill the list of track points in file properties, you can see all the track points, with the track number they belong to.

What's missing, as you said, is the ability to copy tracks between files.  We definitely hope to add this functionality, as well as a + button on the main file list to see the tracks that make up each file.

Thanks for writing.

Hi,

I'll try to answer your questions.  Not sure if you meant it this way, but there's no way the phone will run TF nor can you get many/any maps onto it.  I suppose you could export some .jpgs with worldfiles, if the phone supports that.  But you won't get downloading maps.

As for connecting the Legend to the GPS, I really have no idea.  The USB cable that the garmins use are a standard (mini-B, I think) so you shouldn't need to make one.  Or does Garmin make one specifically for that phone?

I'm curious, in any case.  Maybe you can clarifiy a bit more what you're trying to do.

Thanks.

Beta Testing / 3.18 Beta
« on: October 15, 2007, 10:23:07 AM »
A few more additions in the latest beta:

3.18 – [10/15/07]

Changed select points / zoom / select map rectangle to be more visible
Added Drag and Drop capability to active file list for GPX/supported files
Added “Open Containing Folder” option to right click on files
Added message when batch downloading across zones (not allowed)

Unfortunately the drag and drop only works on the active file area (or the window title area of the main TF window) - NOT on the map itself.

"Open Containing Folder" just opens windows explorer with the current file selected.  I've already found this extremely useful since I have dozens of files open from all over my hard drive.

Thanks.

TopoFusion Anouncements / Elevation server back up
« on: October 11, 2007, 09:48:41 AM »
As of this morning, the elevation (Nasa) server is not serving up DEM data.  So 3D and adding elevation to tracks will not work.  Looks like it's not quite giving an error, so the 3D command just doesn't respond.

After a few tries you will get an error about connecting to the server, however.

We'll continue to monitor this.  It's likely they'll come back soon, but if not we will contact the good folks at Nasa and see if they have an estimate.

Here is a page that shows images based on the DEM data.  When this page displays a B/W image, it'll be back up:

Thanks for the patience.

Beta Testing / 3.17 Beta out
« on: October 07, 2007, 09:17:00 AM »
The latest has some serious speed ups, and cleans up a few outstanding issues that really needed to be taken care of:

3.17 – [10/6/07]

Major speedup in track drawing
Major speedup when large numbers of waypoints are displayed
Added Lodging, Motel and Library to supported graphical symbols
(for Adventure Cycling data)
Fixed bug causing batch/box downloads to miss tiles when
part of the download area was already downloaded
Fixed .kml export with special characters in filenames (& etc)

Both of the speedups won't be hugely noticeable unless you've got a fair number of tracks (or MANY waypoints) loaded.  There was a clipping problem on the track drawing so that even if you only were currently viewing one very small track, it would be as slow as if you were drawing all tracks you had loaded.

The waypoint thing is a bit different -- if there are too many waypoints on the screen TF will simply not draw them on every refresh.  So when panning or zooming, for instance, the text is just not shown.  GE and other programs do this as well -- drawing too much text is just too slow for real time map movement.  The effect can be a little annoying, but mega slow map refresh is much more annoying, trust me!

The load maps tool error was a pretty serious one - it was introduced in one of the more recent TF versions.  The gist is this - if you were downloading a totally new area, it works fine.  But if you already have part of that area downloaded, you would miss some new tiles in that area.  Definitely not cool - users need to be able to trust that the program has downloaded all (active) tiles within the download area once it says "finished."  That should be the case now.

As always, any comments or problems, post or email us.

Thanks.

Archived Support / Canada?

Unfortunately, Landsat and 3D are the only available downloads for Canada right now.

We're working on more Canadian map support in the future.

Here's a detail of available imagery:

Archived Support / kml parse errors

Thanks for sending the file along.  The problem is the ampersand in your filename.

TF uses the full filename for the 'name' field, and ampersand is a special XML character.  Our bug - for sure.

Simple fix is to open the .kml file up with a text editor and delete the & in lines 4 and 6.  It loads up fine after that.  I can also send you a fixed file, if you want.

Alternatively, you can save the .kml file out to a different directory on your computer that doesn't an ampersand in it.

The next version of TF (hopefully out soon) will have this .kml export issue fixed.

Thanks for reporting the problem!
