Lee’s Report – Little Outfit

My good friend Randy Williams drove us to Coronado Monument yesterday afternoon. We unloaded the bikes on that windswept crest and then there we were. The planning, the talking, the thinking was over. The only thing to do was to begin the journey. We stashed the bikes in a thicket and hiked the mile and one half to the border. stepped into Mexico, hiked back and began the ride. There was a strange feeling about it to think what lay before us. It seems long in one way but as I have gotten to know the route I realize it is not so different from any other big project. You just lay out the plan and pace yourself and begin.

We spent a night on the ground in Sunnyside canyon, had a little fire to pass some time before sleeping.

Today had a good ride to The Little Outfit Ranch. We met a friendly group of mountain bikers and it was fun to ride with them for an while. The trail was much better than expected though we took a little detour into Meadow Valley trying to approach the ranch in a different way than originally planned. I ran into Scott’s stubborn side on this one as I didn’t really want to take the detour and the detour did take a while but we ended up seeing some lovely grasslands in the San Rafael Valley.

Tomorrow Patagonia and the Santa Rita Range.

If this is the same Little Outfit Ranch from the late 1950s near Patagonia up in the mountains,? I spent a couple of weeks there in the summers of 1958 & 1959. It was a great experience. I did not know it still existed. Does it still host events?

Yep, it’s near Patagonia and near the mountains! Great little place, but no, I don’t think it is open to the public. We just got lucky to know someone that was ranch-sitting there.
