Despite being a town and rest day, we covered some miles. Bikes are like that sometimes.
We woke up late from our Colorado Trail campsite and left even later. We knew town was not far. We saw peak baggers heading up to Mt. Princeton and a couple CT hikers.
The trail itself was tasty. Well benched and full of fun riding. Soon we were coasting into Buenas Vista for second breakfast at the Evergreen Cafe.
We were fairly to mostly hammered from yesterday’ s hiking, so knew we were going to make a town day of it.
It ended up being a most enjoyable day of seeing friends, taking naps by the river, cooling off, eating at all the major food establishments, charging stuff at the library and even a little work.
It would seem that the monsoons are knocking on Colorado’s doorstep, so we decided to take advantage of the dry evening and pedal a few miles. We did this knowing that the only miles we would pedal would have a zero percent chance of hike a bike–they were roads!
Pleasant ones, too. Detouring around the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness is one few bikepackers loathe. It brings you to a lovely town and presents a peaceful and gorgeous spin along the Arkansas River.
We just pedaled past the CT, instead going closer to Winfield in order to join the CDT as it climbs Hope Pass. New trail for us, perhaps recently worked on if rumors are true.  Either way we expect a big push to 12000 feet and plenty of hike-a-bike.
Can’t wait for new trail!
