At long last we are back on the trail… homeless and with nothing but what we can carry (and a 20 pound bounce box). It feels good.
Durango was a super layover and we sure lucked out on the circumstances, but I was so happy to be rolling out all packed up and ready for adventure.
Even if that adventure was almost purely climbing and on trail we have ridden before. What the Colorado trail lacks in unknown and adventure it makes up for in fun riding, great trails and knockout landscapes.
The 75 miles to Molas is one of the best continuous stretches of high country trail anywhere. I thank my lucky stars that it’s all open to bikes every time I ride it.
There’s the small detail of all the climbing it starts out with, and the fact that it can be a tough transition from layover to trail life. Packs feel heavy, bikes are heavy, legs are heavy. But I loved the climb… every last bit so far, anyway. We are only at 10,200 and have another 2k or so to go before we are ‘in the game.’ It’s a game I very much look forward to being in!
There’ll be some snow up ahead, but at least (in theory), no storms will be breathing down our neck. It’s still pre-monsoon and though there are no guarantees on Indian Trail Ridge, we have a good chance of safe passage.
Short day, lots of climbing, hopefully it’ll prove to be a good transition back to the trail.
