Snow Mission

I got up early to check out Tucson’s once-in-a-decade snow fall. Unwilling to risk life and limb driving (most bridges were closed making it hard to get anywhere early), I rode north to the mountains, mostly on trail and a bit on side streets.

Catalina Mountains at first light.

I got there just in time to snap a few clear photos in the sun.

I rode to the wilderness boundary as the fog rolled in.

I had to leave, anyway, hoping to get back down the trail while everything was still frozen.

It was the earliest start to any ride in the last couple months. It was hard to get going, but well worth the effort once I was out. Riding Behemoth, on fried legs, through snow — well, let’s just say I felt slow. Very slow. But the air was crisp and the scenery incredible. I’ve always wanted to see saguaros and snow.

By the time I got back the snow line was already retreating up the mountain. With the sun peeking through it never stood a chance.
