I knew Louis (Sun Dog) was up to something good in the 50 year trail area. With my re-aquaintence with the pleasures of climbing and dropping off ledges and rocks it seemed the perfect time to sample a little ‘doggie style’ riding.
I was right, he is up to something good. He’s got plenty of B-lines to keep the technical rider interested on the main trails. Plus he knows some of the best stretches of slickrock to play around on.
The guy plays hard, that’s for sure. I came out of the ~4 hour, 10 mile ride more than a little beat up. He seems to be unaffected by overgrowth and the sharp objects that cover most of the desert here. Catclaw across the trail? No problem. The move requires brushing a ocotillo and cholla? Cool, just an added challenge. 6x sealant in the tires helps, no doubt.
Confidence was low, even lower than on Gooseberry. The added challenge of overgrowth was shambilizing me. So I walked a lot of moves that Louis cleaned with style. No problem, it gives me something to aspire to next time.
The beast of UA is slowing shifting into the gears and grind of spring semester. I’m largely shielded from this, but I still at times feel the heat of the beast’s breath. After 3 rides with some hard pedaling and upper body work, it was time for some rest anyway. I’ve just been commuting, riding suburban assault and lifting weights.
AZT trail-building this weekend and Paula has a big half marathon in Pee-nix.
