Scott called yesterday at around 5. He told me that Friday, the first day of the race, he rode about 140 miles. More than 90 percent of the ride was in a downpour. Scott said that he felt great and that the fatigue problems that had been troubling him previous to the race were non-existent. Towards the end of the ride on Friday Scott started having problems with a nerve in his leg. Still, he rode until 1 or 2 in the morning along side Allen Tilling. They slept for 5 hours and began riding at about 8 am. During Saturday’s ride the nerve continued to give him problems. The adjustments that he tried to make to his bike to relieve the pain were unsuccessful and he was beginning to have problems with his IT band and hamstring. As a result his pace began to slow and he had to let Allen go. At the point of our conversation everyone except Brad and Trisha had passed him. He told me that if he saw Brad and Trish and they were going to Holland Lake Lodge he would try to push through the pain and stay with them. I have not yet heard from him today or seen any updates on the blog for the Great Divide Race. Did he make it to Holland Lake Lodge? Did his back problems get better and did he continue riding into the night? Oh the suffering, we can only wait to find out.
