Lee’s Report – The Grand Canyon South

We caught our first glimpse of the canyon from a wonderful singletrack approaching from the south. In the distance outlines of the towering formations could be seen as the evening light was fading. I was very proud to be at the canyon and approaching it in such a unique way away from the cars and lights. It was like coming to it for the first time as an explorer.

The next day we were able to peer down into the abyss and see the trails we would soon be hiking to cross the canyon. The air was very clear and the view was as magnificent as I ever recall seeing it. I returned to the overlooks numerous times over the next two days as we made our preparations on the south rim.

The morning of the hike began with riding to the beginning of the trail which is a nondescript little spot by the mule corrals which is the entrance to another world below the rim. We tied the bikes on the packs and began to walk. Descending through the layers of sandstone, tan then red, then deep red. The temperatures climbing as we went. Hours later and a bit trembly in the legs we arrived at Phantom Ranch. What a great day it was and our little cabin was just a great place to sleep. Our food was cooked by the friendly staff at the dinner house. Then we went to sleep.
