Version 3.60 - Color Aerials
« on: November 20, 2008, 09:33:23 AM »

TopoFusion displaying new Color Aerials in Colorado

We're excited about the release of version 3.60 of TopoFusion Pro.  It features the new "Color" tileset that combines high resolution color aerial data from a number of servers into one "mega" tileset, covering most of the United States:

For list of states covered go to:

Download

Click [ HERE ] to download TopoFusion Pro with the new Color Tileset.

Registered users refer to your registration email for the download link, or go here to request your code and the download URL.

One note: the server responsiveness and quality vary from state to state.  For some reason Texas and Pennsylvania are not in true color -- they are red (?).  But otherwise this is some very high quality and a MAJOR improvement for TopoFusion, especially over the black and white DOQQ data from Terraserver which is often old and sometimes fuzzy / washed out.

Also new, WMS servers

Version 3.60 also introduces custom WMS server support.  Any WMS server can be served and cached by TopoFusion, as long as it can output in the EPSG:4326 projection (most can).  For more info see WMS servers in TopoFusion.

For a complete list of changes see the Revision History

We just released v3.61, a new version that includes better handling of slow and bad server responses.

It seems the increased load on some servers (caused by TF's release!) changed their behavior enough to cause some problems.

Specifically, some areas would report white noise "unavailable" tiles when the server actually has the tiles (restarting TF would force it to retry those tiles).  In v3.61 this shouldn't be an issue.

Definitely recommend an upgrade if you got 3.60 for the short time is was available.

Scott, This looks great. Cant wait to download it and give it a go this weekend. Do you need to be "connected" to the internet to get a 3D view like you are showing or can that be done "offline". Almost all my use is "offline" so I have my fingers crossed!

I just downloaded version 3.61.  I tried downloading the new color maps using the "Load Maps Tool" but the new color maps do not seem to be listed in the "tilesets" preferences. Am I missing something?

Yes, and no.  TF can do 3D views offline, but you need to manually download (and possibly convert) .dem files and place them in TF's dem directory.  Details at the bottom of this page:

The auto-download 3d data is not cached -- yet.  We are planning a caching system in a future version.

Sorry, this is by design right now -- no auto download of color aerials.  (You aren't the first to ask)

These are new servers and we're already putting a fair amount of load on them.  The idea was to "be nice" and not release a version that can truly mass download tiles from them -- until we can confirm they can handle it and/or won't go away.

In other words, look for it in a beta soon, but not right now.

Got it! I will try manual download to get a taste. I did a bit of downloading and it was incredibly slow. Hopefully the new servers will be up to the task.

Yeah, it's been a little hit or miss, and it depends what state you are downloading from.  Right now I'm getting a good flow of tiles for UT, AZ and NV.  Yesterday afternoon things slowed to a crawl for a while, though.

Servers seem to be doing well as of late.  I've had really good luck downloading color aerials this week.

Any word on when the "Auto Load Tool" will be enabled for color maps. I am finding the color maps are not adding much value to me without being able to download them except manually.

Didn't make it until the next release (out soon), but definitely the next one.  Sorry for the delay.

Hi Scott,

Just downloaded V3.8. I took a quick look and saw color aerials were not in the batch download tool. Any word on this?

It would be nice if the DEMs were part of the batch download tool also.

Sorry, didn't get to the update of the batch download.

Will make it a priority for the next beta.  Thanks for the patience.
