TopoFusion Pro / Re: Reversing a profile
« on: June 08, 2010, 02:12:51 PM »
The reversing and merging ability of the profile tool were moved to the merge tool.  The merge tool also brings up a profile, so it's essentially the same thing as what the profile tool used to be.

A lot of people were confused by the profile tool, didn't like the blue dot, et cetera.  So we pulled it out into a simple tool that only profiles a single track and can't be reversed.

Use the merge tool and all should be good.  Shortcut should work too.  I'll make a note to update the docs on this.

Thanks.

Beta Testing / Re: Beta 3.975 obersvations and comments
« on: June 08, 2010, 09:39:36 AM »
Thanks for the feedback.  The locking up on those tilesets is going to be tricky to diagnose.

What do you mean by wrong tiles?  Can you post or send a screen shot?  Do you mean they look like valid map tiles, but they are in the wrong place?  If you close and reopen TF do they stay the same wrong tiles?

Right, the reload map tool does not work for the new tilesets.  It will in the next version.

Open Cycle is a nice service, but I have noticed it sometimes gives white "no map available" tiles, though I am not sure why.  Is that what you mean by wrong tiles?

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Topofusion hangs at roads-large.gpx
« on: June 08, 2010, 09:14:17 AM »
It is probably done with roads-large and locking up for some other reason.

You could try deleting roads-large first though.  It should be in your default GPX directory under the GIS subdirectory.

Otherwise, you may try resetting your TopoFusion settings.  You can do this by deleting or renaming the TopoFusion.ini file.  If you've had the software for a while the file will be in c:\program files\topofusion.  Otherwise it is in:

C:\Documents and Settings\{YOUR USER NAME}\Local Settings\Application Data\TopoFusion

Let us know if that helps or not.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Oregon HR data
« on: June 04, 2010, 09:03:35 PM »
That's interesting about the data showing up on the concurrent Foretrex.  I've seen some flakiness with my HR and Dakota 20, but haven't paired up my forerunner at the same time to double check it.

255 is the value for 'no HR' in TF.  However, if it sees that value it shouldn't be writing it out, it should just not write out an HR value.  Are you seeing 255's in GPX files?

Great.  So were you copying an .ini file over to the installs?  That might explain it, if that file had the erroneous value for that arrow setting.  I'm still not sure how it would get there in the first place though -- the dialog should prevent it from happening.

TopoFusion Anouncements / TIGER service discontinued
« on: June 04, 2010, 01:16:37 PM »
The TIGER tileset in TopoFusion Pro will no longer be able to download new tiles, since the service has been discontinued as of this week, June 1st, 2010.  Any tiles already downloaded in your map cache will always be available, but no new ones will download.  We will update the next version of TopoFusion to not attempt to download new TIGER maps so that the "TopoFusion is having trouble contacting..." error does not occur when in TIGER mode.

More info on the server shut down, and promise of a new mapping service in early 2011:

http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tigerms_redir.html

We will certainly watch for that service and look into incorporating it into a future version of TopoFusion.  In the mean time, our next version features much higher quality and more recent road data, in the form of maps from the Open Street Maps project:

http://openstreet.org

The beta should be released as a full version soon.  Thanks!

The arrow value message is pretty meaningless.  You can fix it by going into Options->Colors/Shading then sliding the "Arrow Frequency" slider at the bottom of the form.  Just move it anywhere and that message shouldn't come up any more.

You are getting the arrow message on multiple W7 installs?  Hmm.  I think it is W7, not anything you did.  I can probably make sure it doesn't happen in future versions, but it is a little puzzling.

Let me know how it continues to go, thanks.

I received this reply:

Thank you for your message.  The Census Bureau has phased out the TIGER
Mapping Service, since it was quite old and outdated.
Our current TIGER products are available from
http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger/.

So, no more new TIGER downloads.  Of course anything you had downloaded will continue to function.

Open Street Maps should render it a moot point, yes.  It is much better data.

Server is giving 404 Not Found error right now:

http://tiger.census.gov/cgi-bin/mapbrowse-tbl/

I have inquired about the status, will report back.

Fortunately, the next version (currently in beta) features a nice new street map layer that is much more current than the TIGER dataset and superior in other ways as well.

Hey Wendy,

Sorry for the delayed response.  I have been out camping, riding bikes and collecting yet more GPS data to test TopoFusion with.  :)

Do you have the 64 bit version of W7?  Or 32?

I think something is wrong with your video card driver.  I recommend checking for an updated version with the manufacturer.  The mixed up tiles and perhaps screen depth issue point to that.

If you need to run it in XP compatibility mode, I recommend running it in 32bit color depth, not 256!  The maps are a lot more detailed than that.

It is possible that it is not a good thing to install TF as an admin, then as a regular user.  I will make a note to check on that -- maybe that was the cause of your install woes.

And finally, the TIGER server is down right now.  There is another thread about that.  Luckily the next version of TF will have a much better street map mode!

« on: June 01, 2010, 11:35:42 AM »
I think we covered some of this by email this weekend, but the super slow running of the program is very strange.  I am not sure what to make of it.

You definitely need admin access to install TF.  If you run the installer as a regular user it should ask you to elevate to the admin and enter the password.  That should work fine.  Though I have not tested it on W7 -- only Vista.

I will see if I can get W7 going and do some testing, but it will be a while yet.

Copying over the map data files is fine -- format has not changed -- until the very latest beta, where there will be a change.  But even that will be OK since it simply converts the file upon first running.

Please let us know if you make any progress on this.  Thanks.

We've released version v3.973 of TopoFusion Pro today.  A server change has made previous version of TopoFusion Pro unable to download topo and black/white aerial maps.  The problem is intermittent, but has been popping up enough lately that it prompted us to release a new version of the software.

Head over to the Download Page to try TopoFusion out, free of charge.

Here is a link to some info on the 'federal lands' layer:

http://www.geocommunicator.gov/GeoComm/fedland/home/fedland_about.shtm

I didn't see anything obvious about updates, only this paragraph:

Quote
The data represents the "best available" seamless source of the federal surface management agency boundaries. The most current data sets are acquired from the state or regional offices of the BLM, USFS, NPS, and other federal agencies. The data are processed into the NILS system to form a national seamless dataset. Data for the Eastern U.S. comes from the U.S. Geological Survey's National Atlas. Much of the BLM data has been snapped to the Public Land Survey System (township, range, and section) making it more accurate than previous versions of the data layers. Data is being maintain through the NILS system

Please let us know if you discover anything.

Is it Windows 7 64 bit?  And are you using TopoFusion Basic, or Pro?  Basic does not work on Windows 7 64 bit.  Pro, however, does.

Windows 7 already comes with the necessary DirectX software.  The other possibility is that you should look for the latest video card drivers for your laptop.  That could be causing the error as well.

Let us know how it goes.

Feature Requests / Re: Tilesets metadata
« on: May 09, 2010, 09:10:27 PM »
There is some chance, yes.  Esp. for terraserver it should be possible.  Some of the other map types might be a little more difficult.  The Color aerial tileset, for example, varies and I do not know how to access that data in a programmatic way.

I am not sure about the land use layer, either.  I can dig out the link if you want to take a look.  I think somewhere on the site it lists the age of the data.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Subset of a gpx file?
« on: May 09, 2010, 09:00:07 PM »
Just to make sure first, you're talking about track points right?

One thing is you can select a single track segment out of the file and save just that segment to a new file using the merge tool.  But that may not be what you are asking for.

A "delete all but selected" function for the box select tool might be what you are looking for?  Draw a box around what you want, delete the rest?

I've never considered such a function, but it would be super easy to add, I think.

Oh, are all the tracks/points you want in the same file, or multiple files?  Are you looking to merge multiple files with this operation as well?  I could see some utility to that... Hmm.

Hi,

If you own a single license of TopoFusion, you can install it on multiple computer (like your desktop and laptop) as long as only one is in use at a time.

What operating system is the laptop running?  TopoFusion Pro does require at least Windows 2000 or XP.  If either of those two operating systems is used, you may need to install DirectX 9 or higher, from this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3

Once installed, try installing TopoFusion again.

Hope that helps.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: network tool on very dense trail networks
« on: May 09, 2010, 08:35:45 PM »
Hmm.  This is an interesting problem.  I haven't dealt with too many dense trail networks, so my experience is limited.

If the density of the trails is quite often tighter than the expected GPS error, the method is pretty likely to fail to represent the actual trail network accurately.  The problem is, as you noted, when the tracks of two close trails actually intersect.  The method considers them to be the same trail.  There's no provision for considering the elimination of an intersection that might have been erroneous.

I could think about how this could be done.  It's certainly a weakness of the method and one worth thinking about.

As for the loops being eliminated or turned into dead-ends... it would be best to turn the contraction strength all the way down.  You can still leave the reduction strength higher than zero, so that you do get reduction of multiple traces into a single track.

You might be able to get some good results by just hand editing to eliminate intersections of trails that don't actually intersect.  But there may be too many of those, as well, so it might not be feasible.

I'll let you know if I come up with anything.  Maybe request some test data if I make some progress on it.

Thanks for the post.

Beta Testing / v3.972 - Terraserver fix
« on: May 07, 2010, 12:40:05 PM »

Trouble contacting terraserver...?

There's a new beta out that changes the server used to download topo maps from 'terraserver-usa.com' to 'msrmaps.com'.

Right now old versions of TF cannot download topo and B/W aerials.

Supposedly they were going to keep forwarding requests from terraserver-usa.com to msrmaps.com indefinitely.  But as of today that does not seem to be the case.  Thus the new version.

TopoWMS:

You can fix your TopoWMS by going to the CustomWMS server dialog and changing the server from "terraserver-usa.com" to "msrmaps.com" .

If all you use is TopoWMS, the change should be all you need.

Beta is available here:

http://topofusion.com/beta.php

For all registered users.  We will probably release v3.972 in full and demo versions later today.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Topofusion Won't Load

There should be a shortcut in the TF start menu for the diagnostic file.  It's just a text file.

Interesting on the firewall.  Sounds like that's the culprit!

834
Hi,

Unfortunately there's no way (yet) to get statistics per activity type in the logbook.  That is what you are asking about, right?  For example, looking at your total mileage or climbing in a month?

You are right that you could combine all your GPX/TCX files for biking into one file and then do some analysis using other parts of TopoFusion.  This would be a way to get some summary statistics, but it would be a little tedious for sure.

Per activity stats is definitely on the 'todo' list.  Thanks for the note.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Topofusion Won't Load
« on: May 03, 2010, 08:51:16 AM »
Hi,

Sorry about the delay responding -- somehow I didn't get the notification of this new topic.

Let's have a look at the TF diagnostic file and see if there are any clues in there.

Once you deleted your GIS folder, what is it hanging on now?  There shouldn't be a continent.gpx file, so it should hang on that (it may be some other file you have loaded).

You can hang onto your settings by copying the TopoFusion.ini file into another directory, or rename it.  Then see if it'll load with the default settings.  Most likely it will, but at least we'd know for sure it's some file or setting causing the issue.

Thanks.

836
Hi,

The color aerial tileset is special and comprised of several different servers and access methods.  Those server setting are upgraded with each version, so there are no previous settings that may be hanging around to mess things up.

CustomWMS servers are settings that are not overwritten, on the other hand.

I am seeing good/fast downloading for color aerials in AZ right now.  Where are you having issues?

837
Thanks.  I did a batch using that box and it did finish for me.  It took 2.5 hours, though.  It did have trouble contacting terraserver a couple times, but continued on after waiting the 60 seconds.  Normally I think it would be much faster, but Terraserver does seem to be a little flakey today.

I did Topo 4M and 16M, as well as elevation.

I thought there might be some missing tiles in there that were messing things up (due to a recent change in how topofusion deals with the tiles in non-batch situations) but it appears that isn't it.

Just to make sure, are you using v3.971 (the latest) ?

838
I thought of something else.  Can you send me a GPX file for an example box you are trying to download (just use the pencil tool to roughly draw a box) ?

I have a hunch that something else might be going on.

839
Hi,

Sorry about the delayed response -- I was out bikepacking on the Arizona Trail over the weekend.

This is not a known problem, no.  Most likely it indicates a problem with one of the servers.  At the moment I am having trouble getting tiles from Terraserver (topos).  The Batch download tool will not finish until it downloads every tile.

However, it should give an error message if it has enough repeated failures from a server.  Are you not seeing those?

840
Hey Matt,

There's nothing in TopoFusion to do what you are asking (as I told you in person... :).  But it wouldn't be too difficult a piece of code to write and might be a nice feature to have in the software.

For future reference or others wondering about this, the closest thing right now is the custom map .KMZ export feature, described here:

http://topofusion.com/garmin-custom-maps.php

Basically you could zoom to cover the track and then export a series of tiled jpegs that cover the whole area.  To pull the jpegs out of the KMZ file you can just renamed file.kmz to file.zip.  Then unzip it and find each of individual jpegs there.

Now, to your second question.  I'm not sure what could be going on with the shift -- probably a datum issue.  TF doesn't read the .csv file it writes out, unfortunately.  You might try the .txf (maptech format).  It exports lat/lon instead of UTM coordinates, and is still a comma separated file, easy to open in excel.  The downside?  It doesn't have elevation info.

It sounds like what you need is a 'zoom to track' function, rather than the current 'zoom to file' function.  I'm trying to think of a way to do this without creating 20 different files, but haven't thought of anything yet.

The lap analysis tool will pan the map to show the current 'interval', but not zoom it unfortunately.  You could use this on the un-split track to have 15 mile chunks highlighted for each map.  Just set the interval to 15 miles, double click on each one and then adjust the zoom in our out to match.  Might be a good ghetto solution.

Let us know what you come up with, if anything.

Sorry, head down in my dissertation right now (finished tomorrow hopefully!).  I'll have the fix available in a beta version that is registered.  So, yes, you can use the fix.

Drop me a note in a couple days and we can take a look at the black map issue.

846
Black and White aerials appear to be back for eastern states, however now a few topo 4m tiles, very sparsely, are refusing to download -- no matter how many times they are requested they give a "map missing" error (white fuzzy) tile.

There is plenty of evidence that they are working through these issues, so I expect it won't be long until everything is back 100%.

847
TopoFusion Pro / Re: Lockup when exporting topo 4M to Oregon 450
« on: March 31, 2010, 07:07:58 PM »
OK, the problem is due to some issues with Terraserver that have been
going on for about a week or so.  For some reason the server refuses to
serve certain tiles sometimes.  We built in a mechanism to keep trying,
but that code wasn't tested with the KMZ exporter.  It is trying, and
waiting, but it sometimes never gets that tile.

I have a fix that makes it so it doesn't just hang and take forever trying
to download.  But the resulting KMZ ends up with a few (small number) of
holes in it (white fuzzy tiles).

If you're interested in this version I can hook you up with it.
Unfortunately it seems the missing tiles never show up, no matter how many
times the software tries them.

Interestingly they are only in the east -- I have tried some exports out
west (AZ, CA, etc) and they download and export just fine.

Anyway, they have corrected a number of the server issues and other forms
of missing tiles recently, so it is likely that it won't be long until the
server is back running 100%.

Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks a lot for reporting the problem and
your patience helping me figure out what's up.

Yeah, a black map indicates (likely) some kind of graphics issue.  There's a shortcut to the log file (it will open in notepad) in the TF start menu group.  You can copy/paste that into an email, or just here on the forum.

Strange that the different tilesets have an effect.  I'll have to think about that.

Hmm.  Strange that it is working for you with aerials but not topos.  It does reset the graphics engine to be 1000x1000 in order to export the tiles.  So it does suggest something going wrong there.

If you haven't opened and closed TopoFusion successfully since, can you email me your TopoFusion.log file so I can take a look?  smorris@topofusion.com

Hi,

Sorry about the issue.  Does it start exporting tiles before it locks up?  In other words, what does the status bar say at the bottom of the export dialog?  Is it stuck downloading tiles, exporting, or does it even get started?

Is it possible to hit the cancel button when it is locked up?  It may be due to the Terraserver issue that has been ongoing for the last several days.
