PhotoFusion has been revamped, implementing what you're describing here.  Photos are now waypoints (can be moved, deleted, etc) and thumbnails are shown on the map, with zooming on mouse-over.

You can also add any old jpeg to the map, including ones that are loaded off the internet.

Check out the latest beta version.

but it's time to move on...

Krein, so I don't try to be too cheap with my next video card, what VPU requirements will be needed for optimal perforamance? Should it support Pixel Shader 2.0 - - whatever that is?  ':p'

Any other stuff besides supporting DX 9?

Larry

Nothing real important.  We may be using pixel shaders at some point, but it won't be for anything mission critical, just extra graphic effects.

DX9, a fair amount of texture memory, that's about it.

Beta Testing / Live tracking error in 2.98

Actually your data was transfered to the highway patrol and you'll be getting the ticket in the mail...

No, the speed issue is a bug that was reported a while ago but got lost somehow.  I believe I just fixed it, but won't be able to check it for a while.

As for GPS gate, not sure anyone has tried using that software before.  Incorrect checksum seems like it's their problem not ours, what other programs does it *work* on?

I assume you're splitting a GPS feed.  Using the Garmin protocol?

Thanks for the feedback, as always.

Well, that's great for the Clearwater National Forest!  Seems like that data only covers that forest, not the whole country.

I couldn't see exactly what we're looking for on the NPS site, either, but keep looking.

If the data on Clearwater is in shapefile format (.shp + some other files) then all you'd need to do is convert to GPX.  There are a few programs out there ($$$) to do it, or you can wait until we add shapefiles to TF.  I've got export to shapfile (tracks) working so far...

Yeah, it seems to be increasing.  I try to delete them as soon as I see them, but when I'm out (like this weekend, camping) they stick around for a while.

They aren't out of control -- yet.  But I'm going to see if there is anything like you describe that can be done.

Archived Support / rino 110 question???
« on: November 02, 2006, 05:48:56 PM »
Yes, you can do all that with TopoFusion.

Assuming your GPS is hooked up to the computer, via serial port, the next step is to determine which COM port the GPS is on.  Trial and error is sometimes best (COM1 and 2 are typical).

Go to Options->Preferences->GPS and set to "Garmin Serial", then select a COM Port.

Now open the GPS dialog (GPS menu) and either download tracks or waypoints (whichever you want).  If you selected tracks, another dialog will come up after the transfer completes.  This lets you save out different portions of your track log, or merge them together.

Save as.. dialogs will come up as you go.  Once they are saved the GPX files (GPX stores both track and waypoint info) will be shown on the main screen.  You can double click on a file to zoom and move the map to show it.

From there, just experiment around with the program.  Remember that right clicking on things will often give you options.

Hope this helps.

Krein, TC's post led me to check my video card (Radeon 9200 vpu). It supports Direct X up to 8. Not 9. I'll bet that's the answer to the blank screen I still get with the beta at unpredictable times.

Gonna build a new system for Vista real soon, so a temporary issue I hope!

Larry

I'm surprised it works at all if DX9 isn't supported by the card.

But that is a point.  We are losing some compatability with older systems with this.  We will certainly try to make it work, but no guarantees.  There's always the old version.  For example, I'm not sure how DX9 works on Win98 machines, if it works at all.  TF 2.97 works even on very old hardware (Pentium 100 era), but it's time to move on...

Well I Hope you can find a way. why is 18mb too large to add? The ALL roads is 30mb and I load it with no issues?

The size is no problem, it's the format of the data.  If we can figure out where they got their original data from (likely a shapefile, publicly available) then we can easily add it to TF.  If I knew where to get the data it would already be in TF.

It's the GNIS database that's too large.  The WW data may be a subset of GNIS.

That fixed the issue with the ocx error. :-))

But...

I tried to add a photo using the waypoints, but I seen no option for adding? Only URL? I was looking forward to something like adding Jpg files, so I can specify where on the HD they are. I do see the toggle for Photos, but no option to add them in the waypoints?

Also Any ETA on the forest name info being added? Not sure how hard that might be?

Grant

Glad it works.  Thanks for the report.

PhotoFusion still needs more upgrades in functionality.  You *can* add any old photo right now, but it's not as easy at it will be.

Right now the way to add photos is if you have some associated (Within the time bounds) of a GPS track.  Then go to File Properties->Pictures, set the directory and use "Place Waypoints."

To add any old photo right now, add a waypoint, add the path of the .jpeg to the "comment" field and change the Symbol to "Photo".

Re: forest.  I need a data source.  World wind's data is ~18 mb, but it's in their own format.  I'm sure they got it or compiled it from other sources.

Here is where we got (first converting and filtering in some cases) the data for the current GIS layers:

http://www.nationalatlas.gov/atlasftp.html

There is the GNIS database, which we have, but is too large to load up the way the current GIS layers do.  It needs to be served, in portions, rather than downloaded all at once.  It has an amazing number of terrain features.  But if we can figure out where Worldwind got it's smaller dataset, I think that would be ideal.

Thanks for that.  It's exactly the problem -- those Intel (8xxx and 9xxx) don't support T&L transforms.  Once I added a check for that and a switch to software transforms, it's all good (at least on a laptop here on an Intel 9xxx chip).

I should have a new version later in the day with this fix and the new photofusion stuff.

Archived Support / Renaming DEM files need help?
« on: October 29, 2006, 02:53:34 PM »
Hey guys,

Yeah, there is no good way to predict with DEM will be used if there are multiple.  I think it's just the first one that it finds.

Grant, only reason not to use 10 meter is slower load times, especially if you're looking at a large area.  10 meter only helps if you're looking at a very small area.  I find 30 meter good enough for my purposes, but then everyone uses the program differently.

Thanks for answering the question, Larry.

You mean user imported maps?  Or do you mean adding maps through the PhotoFusion feature, but not having them forced to be within the time bounds of a track?

Check the announcements forum.  I just added the ability to add photos to the map (as waypoints).  So if this is what you mean, it's already done.

User calibrated maps will be soon....

Here is another screen shot, this one showing off some the new PhotoFusion features:

Yep, photos on the map, semi-transparent.  Mouse over enlarges the photos, and clicking on it opens up your computer's jpeg viewer on the file.

Photos are also now simply waypoints with a filename associated with them.  So you can move photos around.  The photofusion dialog is only used to place the photos initially.  (Before all photos were tied to the tracks).

Playback with a photo enabled track enlarges each photo as it is reached.  It's pretty cool.

This also gives the functionality to add a photo that doesn't have EXIF info, or was taken from a different day, or whatever, to a map.

Still working out improvements to the HTML generation stuff, as well as trying to keep the display as fast as possible.

Feature Requests / Info on Forest locations?

Yep, that makes sense.

Easiest way to stop it from zooming out is to make sure you already have a GPX file loaded.  It only zooms to the file you just loaded if there are no files previously loaded.  I'm not sure if we should keep this 'feature' or not.  But for now you can prevent it by keeping another file loaded.

Thanks

That is definitely not the intended behavior.

When you say load the large cities file do you mean through the GIS layers window, or are you loading the GPX file directly?

Let me guess - you don't have any GPX files loaded (in the active list below the map).  There may be a bug with loading GIS layers if there are no regular GPX files loaded.

Thanks.

Thanks for going through all this and testing it out.

Just want to check one thing -- the error message you are getting is the one where it tells you to try registering GPSMaster.ocx, right?

It would appear that some of the Intel Graphics do not support DX9 at all.  For some reason I don't get the GPSMaster error, but it still doesn't work.  Could just be due to variance in drivers or which specific card.

I can't believe your desktop doesn't have the file. Maybe it's getting it from the TopoFusion directory (it should be there, but doesn't need to be).

Anyway, I'm trying something new at the moment.  Thanks.

It's not enough to copy the file, but thanks for trying.

If that file is not in Windows\System32, then you haven't installed the latest DirectX9 from the link on the download page.  Every system I have installed DX9 on has that file (and others) in System32.

To the best of my knowledge this should get rid of problems with GPSMaster.ocx registering.  I tried it on an old laptop with ~4mb video and I didn't get an OCX problem, but it also wouldn't start up.  I tried some DX9 sample programs and they also didn't work.  But you should at least be able to get past the GPSMaster error by installing the latest DX9.

Are you certain it's not there?  The .OCX file depends on that file, so it would neither register nor run without it.

Did you install the most recent DX9 on your laptop, or did it already have DX9?

No the 7 does not mean 7 meter, it's the type of imagery.

I just did a comparsion between worldwind and TopoFusion and the resolution is better in TF.  They must not be downloading the highest resolution tiles, probably to conserver bandwidth.

Actually, world wind uses a completely different server.  The original source of the data is the same (landsat 7), but the colors are funky and detail not as good.

TopoFusion uses the OnEarth Server, which hosts the mosaic created by Lucian Plesea.  World Wind initially used Lucian's data, but for some reason decided duplicate his efforts, and it seems they didn't do as good of a job.

Hi,

I think I've got this figured out.  If you could answer two questions, I'd be most thankful.

1) did you already have DirectX 9.0c installed, or did you have to install it previous to trying the new version of TF?

2) regardless of the answer to #1, do you have the file d3dx9_30.dll in your C:\Windows\system32 directory?

I am pretty sure that file needs to be in system32.  I think it's installed by the latest DX9 installer, but older versions of
DirectX 9.0c don't have it.  Confusing, I know.

Thanks for any help.

If I'm correct we should be able to sort this out for the next installer.

526
That's interesting.  v2.98, right?

Does the display freeze, or just the position being received from the GPS?  That is, if you turn off live tracking, is everything else still working?

Thanks.

Sorry about the start menu problem too.  We'll fix that in the next installer.  It detects whether TF files exist, and if so it won't add start menu icons.  Really it should just ask if you want them or not.

Beta Testing / TopoFusion Direct3D - 2.98
« on: October 16, 2006, 09:08:59 AM »
We posted the current version of TF D3D.  It's still considered experimental.  Moving back to 2.97 is pretty easy with the new installer though.  Worst case is that some of the text or the textures won't work.

http://www.topofusion.com/beta.php

Right now we have focused on getting all of the previous functionality working in Direct3D.

You may notice some things like:

* landsat tiles are now based on degree sizes, and you can look at the entire world at one time.
* smoother 2d display
* anti-aliased lines.
* faster 3D, smooth transition to 3D
* the animated/rotating sprites for track playback (runner, cyclist)
* export to PNG
* more info here: http://tinyurl.com/yd9ols (in the announcements forum)

There are still a few things that are disabled, like contrast/sharpness in combo mode.  But most everything should be working.

We've already found one (old) laptop that has problems with some of the textures and particularly the fonts.  It may be a driver issue, but we'll be working on it.

Important - you will need to install DirectX 9 before TopoFusion will install correctly or run.

It can be found here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.mspx

Please let us know how it works on your computer!  Screen shots of any messed up / odd looking graphics would be much appreciated.

To get more tiles to fit on the screen go to

Options->Prefs->Tilesets

Change "Tileset preference" towards shrink lower tilesets.  The display may be a little slower this way but you'll be able to get well more than 40 tiles.

You're not using the load tile tool correctly.  In the same dialog referenced above, select ONLY aerial tilesets.  Then zoom out to larger tiles (64 meter, for example) and draw a box around the area you want (You can save that box for future reference using "right click->save as..").  It downloads all active tilesets in that box.

Since I bought the software and I am new at it, I was looking through it and noticed that the 3D files are downloaded via internet and NOT stored on the HD of the computer.

What I need to know is there an easier way to get DEMS?

Correct.  Downloaded 3D data is not stored on the hard drive (yet).

For acquiring DEM data, see:

http://topofusion.com/3d.php

At the bottom there are detailed instructions on how to get large area DEM files from the seamless USGS site.  No conversion using the dos program is required.  You can use 3DEM to do it.  It's one file at a time, but you can get fairly large files with this method.

Or, wait until we tile and cache 3D data.

You can increase the area in 3D by either zooming out before going into 3D, or zoom out in 3D mode and hit the 'R' get to regenerate the model.

I agree that the field of view is too small the model.  We are reworking the 3D code right now.  We haven't approached the continuous modeling method of Google Earth yet, but we are getting closer.

In minimum we want to increase the area and detail of the texture when you generate a model.

Not sure what you mean by a colorized feature?  You want to add color to a given tileset, like shade everything green?  That sort of thing will be easier come the the Direct3D version of TF that we are working on now.

As for 1M aerials -- yes, they are very detailed, so they take a while to download them all.  You know about the 'load maps' tool, right?  You can grab an area, then let it collect tiles while you sleep or something.

Even just a single state at 1m aerial would be quite a large file.

That depends largely on where you live.  Quite a few people have asked us about Google's maps and said the opposite: "they're lower resolution, but still nice to have around."

The DOQQ (black and white) is not always the best available, but it's still an impressive set of imagery.  The areas covered by Urban Tilesets are incredible, even from Terraserver/TopoFusion.  Sometimes Google Earth only has a coarse sattelite image, similar to TF's Landsat.

Best guess is that the request is being blocked by a firewall.

The GIS layers are downloaded from topofusion.com itself, not from Terraserver and OnEarth (sites that were likely permitted for the application to access).

-1 just means the download failed.  I'll make the error message more informative and have it suggest a firewall problem.

2 - The image is from 08_26_2006 and represents the cloud cover at that time.  There is a daily archive for the last two years.  It'll be cool to check out conditions on a given day of a ride/hike/run/whatever.

3 - Transparent lines for state boundaries and (kind of) the red tracks in the pic.

4 - Lat/Lon (geographic) projection.  Had to make this change to properly use the Nasa OnEarth server.  Loading tiles from that server is much, much faster now.

More coming....

Hmm.  I will have to test the installer a little more.

I'll get it fixed and let you know, probably tomorrow.

Hmm.. looks like an unintentional side effect of a request to *not* create start menu groups if the program is already installed.

To get them back do this:

Delete TopoFusion.exe from program files\topofusion
Re-install 2.97 (the .exe and start menu should come back now)

Sorry 'bout the problem.
