TopoFusion Pro / Re: Maps have compressed aspect ratio
« on: July 20, 2012, 09:28:38 PM »
Hey aksnowbiker,

It's a product of your high latitude.  Not intentional, just a byproduct of the way TF displays the map.  I don't think a previous version would change it, unless we had released a funky one time version in mercator mode?  I don't think so.

With as many google maps tile style mapsets as we have (and are likely to add) I plan to change to that native projection, so in a future version hopefully the 'extreme' latitudes won't suffer from such distortion.

Sorry about the issue... and late response.

TopoFusion Anouncements / v4.6 - MSRMaps is back!
« on: June 23, 2012, 06:27:52 PM »

After announcing that MSRMaps.com (formerly Terraserver) will be closing permanently, the Microsoft has decided to keep the service alive.  They received enough requests from longtime users and folks that rely heavily on the service.  If you send a note in, thank you!

This has, in turn prompted us to release another revision that re-enables access to new MSRMaps tiles.  So the traditional Topo maps, B/W aerials (still useful!) and urban imagery for some cities, are all back!  The new USTopo layer is still available as well, so now there are three sources of Topo maps in Terraserver!  The array of maps available to TF users continues to grow...

v4.6 also fixed a bug created by the massive size of this year's Tour Divide race.  The Trackleaders spot replay interface had a problem replaying the current race.  Tour Divide is an exciting race that continues for weeks, so there is still time to get in on the action and do your own replays in TF.  Check out more at:

Trackleaders / TopoFusion.

Don,

So sorry about the late reply on this.  I did not get a notification and have been traveling / off the computer as well.

Best thing to do might be to try resetting your TF settings to default.  Here are some instructions:

To reset back to default settings, first close TopoFusion.  Then delete
(or rename to keep a backup) the file TopoFusion.ini.  It should be here:

C:\Documents and Settings\*Your USER NAME*\Local Settings\Application Data\TopoFusion\TopoFusion.ini

Or for older installs:

C:\Program Files\TopoFusion\TopoFusion.ini

---

Let us know if that solves your issue or not.  Thanks and again, sorry about the delay.

Hi,

Oops, I intended to re-enable batch downloads, but it looks like it did not take.  Next release for sure...

Due to terms of use, we can't enable batch for myTopo and OSM... but US Topo, yes.

Thanks for the comment!

Thanks for the nudge.  4.6 is out now with Terraserver tilesets reinstated!  Downloading well right now.

Hi Theresa,

I just replied to your email.  Sounds like you have the program all installed, just aren't getting any maps.

First thing is to make sure you are centered somewhere you're interested.  Do you have a GPX or KML file with some data of interest?  If so you can load that and have the program center on it.  That way you'll know you are in the right spot.

The next thing is to make sure TF has access to the internet.  That's what the Firewall message is about.  If you have any kind of Firewall installed it should most likely come up with a popup asking you to allow or forbid access.  You'll need to allow it access similar to a web browser.

Also try changing to a few different map types under the Map Type.  Depending on where in the world you are looking there may or may not be maps available.

Hope that helps.  Let us know how it goes.

No, sorry.  Only the old style topo and aerial are available.  This should be a high priority to allow a choice of map background(s), though.  I'll try to get to it.

Thanks.

Those are nice maps indeed.

Looks like they may be adding data from other sources... I will look into whether they have a tile service and the terms of use.  Thanks for the link!

Great news!  I will have to update TF again to reinstate the old tilesets for new installs.  Will get to that next week (heading out on the bike today).

Thanks for the post.

Couple more odds and ends:

External GPS antenna.  Works with GPSMap 60 series units, and probably a lot of others with the supplied attachments.

GPSMap 76 series auto mount.

Same deal for these.  Want 'em?  $10 to cover my shipping and I'll get them to you (US only)

363
Good point.  I really wish the web protocols for APRS were easier to decipher.  I will try to dig into it again once the shutdown is confirmed.  ;)  Thanks for the note.

364
Unfortunately support for that is not available, but planned for the next version.  Sorry.

GPS, Trails, Training / GPS garage sale - CHEAP
« on: May 13, 2012, 03:37:12 PM »
I am cleaning house, trying to move on some GPS units to someone that will use them.

First up is an almost new Delorme PN-30.  A lot of people like this platform of GPS.  I bought it wanting to add support to TF for it, but the protocol proved far too complex.  $50 including shipping (US only).  Includes handlebar mount.

Close up of GPS.

Next up is a Magellan Sportrack Pro, including manual and serial cable:

Cover shipping (US only - $10) and it's yours.

Last one is an oldie, an original Lowrance iFinder:

Same as the Magellan, cover shipping (US only - $10) and it's yours.

Paypal preferred, other options considered.

366
Yeah, it is odd that it is up/down.  It could be intentional to help get the word out on the closure, or could signify they are considering keeping the service.  Hard to know.

367
Just a follow up, please see this other thread if you are interested in B/W aerials:

Email sent w/ v4.41.  I haven't tested it yet to see if topos and/or B/W aerials are working.  I am 90% sure B/W should work given that USAphotomaps still does.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Contact Microsoft to bring back the map server

Sure enough, USAPhotomaps still works for B/W aerials, which means TopoFusion almost assuredly does, too -- if you are using v4.41 or earlier.

Can't hurt.  Thanks for the post!

372
Thanks for the update.  Those coordinates in the rtepts above look like "web spherical mercator" coordinates -- I am not sure shapefiles support that, but they may now.  TF's library might be a bit behind the times in that regard, though it seems like the latest should support it, if it's valid in a shapefile.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Creating Routes (newbie question)
« on: May 07, 2012, 09:57:40 PM »
Hi RonDog,

Sorry, TF's support of waypoint commented routes is pretty limited.  You've hit the two biggest limitations on the head.  Unfortunately I can't think of a way to assemble such a route *and* upload it properly in TF.  It's my fault -- I just use tracks, and have never thought of using waypoint routes.  But I can see some advantages...  Sorry.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Adding elevation to a tracklog/GPX in Alaska
« on: May 07, 2012, 09:55:20 PM »
Looks like fairly noisy data, so the "Training Center" setting is more reliable -- needs some filtering / smoothing.  Really hoping to have more filtering options in the software soon.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: DirectX problem
« on: May 06, 2012, 11:07:06 PM »
It's back meaning TF is working again?  Sounds like there is an error message somewhere that needs adjusting.... TF won't run at all w/o DX9, so you shouldn't have to install it.

It does work across multiple monitors... sometimes.... drivers get flakey though, so it's a bit unknown too.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Adding elevation to a tracklog/GPX in Alaska

Does the elevation data itself look good?  Or is it multiplied by 2 or 3 or anything?

377
TopoFusion Pro / Re: Adding elevation to a tracklog/GPX in Alaska
« on: May 03, 2012, 03:44:24 PM »
3D should work, though that is very old code to mesh with the newer 3D code.

Glad you got the elevation data rolling.  Should just be climbing -- no descending.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Adding elevation to a tracklog/GPX in Alaska

Hey Jay,

Did you check that your DEMs are working in 3D mode or not?

Guessing your course file is above 60* N, so outside the auto-downloading DEMs?

379
TopoFusion Pro / Re: Open Aerial
« on: May 02, 2012, 03:17:10 PM »
When you switch to 3D mode it often increases the resolution of the map in order to improve the detail.  Under 3D settings there is a "texture multiplication" setting that controls this.  If you leave it at 1.0 (all the way left) you will get exactly the same map and won't see any change in tiles that you have or don't have when switching to 3D.

Hope that makes sense.

380
One note for existing users:

The new "US Topo" is a completely new tileset in a different map projection.  So you will be starting over from scratch.  There's no reasonable/good way to combine the old topos with the new ones, unfortunately.  Any old maps you had downloaded will still be available, but only as their own tileset in the old "Topo 2M, Topo 4M, etc" tilesets.

Bill - sorry, I should have made that more clear.

The new "US Topo" is a completely new tileset in a different map projection.  So, yes, you will be starting over from scratch.  There's no reasonable/good way to combine them, unfortunately.  Any old maps you had downloaded will still be available, but only as their own tileset in the old "Topo 2M, Topo 4M, etc" tilesets.

382
Hmm, it shouldn't be mixing up northern/southern hemisphere.  It does assume stuff about UTM zone if the shapefile is in that projection, resulting it the file being off to the east/west.  Can you attach or send me the shape file(s) (shape files are more than one file) and I'll have a look?

Thx.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Open Aerial
« on: May 02, 2012, 11:03:36 AM »
Yeah, it's just the highest resolution set of tiles that seems to continue to have issues.

I got a screen or two full of high res tiles just now, but then it stalled out.  It's almost as if they have some sort of throttling, as the same thing happened yesterday.  Wait, I just got some more.  Strange.

384
After looking at this closely, I did not find any errors.  I upgraded v4.5 of TF to the latest version of the shapefile library, however that did not help read your file.  It just immediately throws an exception that it's not a valid shapefile from the get go.

Let me know if you guys still experience problems.  Maybe libshapefile hasn't supported certain extensions for Arc10 yet.  Thanks.

Looks like the high resolution tiles are back now.

389
So far, the new US Topo  server seems quite fast, and appears to be hosting the same 'vintage' maps as the old MSRMaps data  (as shown in the map comparison above).

Unfortunately, I have noticed that is has some gaps in coverage, most notably (for me) Tucson Mountain Park and some of Tucson.  It might be related to maps that were incorrectly registered before, on MSRMaps -- there was always an annoying offset in TMP.

Luckily MyTopo is the hot setup -- with correctly registered maps and awesome quality.  Please give their company a look and go support their other products (such as printed paper maps).  They are an awesome company.

http://mytopo.com

390
Existing users -- since Terraserver is currently still up, you may not want to download v4.5 just yet since it will not even attempt to contact the old server.

You'll notice that the same Topo, B/W aerial and Urban tilesets will remain active on your copy of TF.  New users will not see them at all, and options to view/download or process them do not show up.

391
It's May 1st and the server is still up, so if you wanted the B/W tiles or old Topo's, keep downloading!  (And don't download the new version -- it has downloading disabled for the old server).

TopoFusion Anouncements / Version 4.5 released - new Topo Map server
« on: April 30, 2012, 11:21:18 PM »

We're happy to announce the release of v4.5 of both the Pro and Basic product.  The main new feature is the addition of the "US Topo" tileset, which replaces the now deprecated "Topo" tileset.  The old Topo tileset was downloaded from MSRMaps.com (formerly Terraserver) which has been shut down (read details here: MSRMaps shutting down).

Previously downloaded maps in the old Topo tileset will still be available to existing users, but future downloads have been disabled.  For more details, read the forum thread:

Yes, these maps should work just fine with your Vista HCx.  Dig around a bit on the sites linked above, you will find instructions on how to get them loaded.

395
It's possible that the USGS server has historical aerials on it.  It does have historical topo's.  I can have a look.  But yes, the current/old server is going away, so we will no longer have access to those tiles.

The new topo's (also from USGS) are the same scans as the current 'topo' layer from everything I have seen.  Only downside is that there are a few gaps in coverage (such as the Tucson Mountains, where I live!).

396
We'll have a new release out shortly with a replacement topo server.  Tileset = US Topo.  Thanks for the patience folks as we transition to a new server!

The server is returning invalid tiles, so there's not much I can do on TF's side.  Hopefully it will be a short outage.  In the meantime, how about the Color Aerial tileset?

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Track/Waypoint elevation shading
« on: April 26, 2012, 07:58:39 PM »
Hi,

You're right, the track shading is based on the min/max elevation of all tracks loaded.  Simple solution - hit CTRL-A and then right click to disable them all.  Then turn on only your temperature track.

I do plan to allow manual setting of the ranges for shading, but it's not there yet.

I'm not sure how you would shade waypoints, or what useful effect it might have.  Shade the color of the font for the waypoint text being displayed, perhaps?  I suppose it could be interesting with enough waypoints.  Maybe you can describe more what you want to do with it.

Thanks.
