TopoFusion Pro / Re: Open Aerial not working in 3D mode?

Looks like the server is back online.  Give it another try and let me know if you're still having issues.

Thanks.

Looks like right now the elevation (and landsat) server is down and not responding:

Elevation won't download until this page loads:

http://onearth.jpl.nasa.gov/

They are likely upgrading hardware or dealing with some other server issue.  I will post further updated on the announcements forum if it does not resolve itself soon.

Thanks for the patience.

Strange.  Wonder if Windows7 is running it in compatibility mode or something else goofy is going on.  I can't explain why it works for both of my W7 computers as well as countless other users..

However, it seems like there should be a way to override the font setting and prevent it from scaling.  That might be one way to fix it.  I'll give it a shot.

Yes, especially with Open Aerial there can be localized issues / outages.  Any better luck today?  If not I will try the Wind Rivers (beautiful...) and see if I can reproduce.

« on: October 26, 2012, 11:25:07 AM »
Thanks for the post.  This is one of those strange/frustrating ones that I have never been able to reproduce.  I just tried switching between 100% and 125% (forces a logout or I would have done it sooner).  In both settings everything in TF looks fine to me.  I think you have the labeling wrong above -- it works in 100% but not in 125%, right?  Looks like the bigger font version has the errors.

Your font looks like the right one, so it's probably not that.  Anything else peculiar about your display, video, accessibility or font settings?

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Open Aerial not working in 3D mode?
« on: October 25, 2012, 02:10:57 PM »
Hi,

Couple things.  One is that in 3d mode the resolution of the texture (map) on the model increases, so you may see download tiles if the higher resolution tiles for your current tileset have not yet been downloaded yet.  Check this by zooming in, in 2d mode.  See if the tiles download, or are there.

I'm seeing fast download from open aerial (in my area, anyway - where are you looking?).  Good downloads from color, and B/W seems to be down or not responding at the moment.

Hope that helps some....

TopoFusion Pro / Re: area
« on: October 24, 2012, 12:06:16 PM »
Let's see, I think you need to click *on the track* itself, not within it.  Try right clicking on the line that you drew.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: area
« on: October 23, 2012, 10:32:47 PM »
You need to first draw a track around the area you wish to measure.  Do that using the draw / pencil tool.  The only trick here is that you need to right click somewhere (anywhere) on the map when you are done drawing, then you'll get a dialog that let's you choose "save as...".  Save the file out, then switch back to the regular hand/pan tool mouse mode.  You should now be able to right click anywhere on your new track and get a dialog that lets you choose "compute area."

Hope that helps!

Beta Testing / Beta 4.67 - Temperature, .FIT, Edge 800, Info Mouse Tool
« on: October 22, 2012, 11:05:30 AM »
Beta 4.67 is up and ready for testing.  Lots of new stuff here.  I'll let the changelog do the talking.

Here are the changes:

4.67 – [10/21/12]  (Beta)

Added support for per GPS point temperatures (e.g. Garmin Tempe sensor)
Including profile tool, track shading, track properties
Added ability to read .FIT files
Added support for Garmin Edge 800/500, also Fenix and any other units that
  communicate by .FIT files
Added new mouse mode – Info Tool.  Use to query tracks and waypoints to
get on-screen stats.  Clicking on a point brings up it's properties view.
Added option to scale line width, fonts and waypoint sizes when exporting maps
(Export View function).  Checkbox turns on scaling to match what is seen in
  current map view
Added shortcut to “Reset TopoFusion to default settings” to start menu on
install.  Useful for debugging issues with the software (more effective than
  uninstall/reinstalling).
Improved download queue behavior when a tileset (server) is unresponsive
Improved shaded relief quality in highest detail setting (when zoomed in)
Improved speed of filling track points table in File Properties
Files with less than 8000 points now loaded by default
Fixed access violation in using “Merge Files and save as...” when using edited
tracks with deleted points or files with multiple un-named tracks
Fixed crash in using the merge tool to save out empty files (nothing merged)
Fixed error disabling downloading with modal forms shown (about, options)
Fixed 'Real Time Playback' option in multi-playback when using skip stopped time

4.66 – [9/7/12]  (Beta)

Changed Astro live tracking centering to only center, not zoom on track
Fixed off by one error(s) converting trackpoint to waypoint
Improved display of downloading tiles while drawing tracks
Added ability to save kml/tcx/shp file when creating a new file with waypoints

« on: October 20, 2012, 10:21:51 PM »
Tom,

You are right -- I am only seeing an option to turn all custom maps on or off.  By vector I meant the standard Garmin .img basemaps -- those come up as separate entries for me.

Hmm.  I will have a look at this, but likely there isn't much we can do - it's a limitation of the unit.  You can control the draw order so that the one you want will be drawn above, but I think that is is.

Hi Emile,

It depends on what GPS you are using.  Try following this tutorial:

That has our best recommendations for following a track in the backcountry.

GPS, Trails, Training / Re: help with multiple map upload
« on: October 19, 2012, 11:17:56 AM »
Tom,

You should be able to view multiple maps as long as you don't exceed the 500 point tile limit (total between all maps).

If you go to "setup map" and "Map information" there should be entries for each custom map (and also vectors) to turn them on or off.  Only if they overlap should this matter though -- they should default to 'enabled' after you upload them.

Hope that helps.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Network with 2 tracks
« on: October 19, 2012, 11:15:12 AM »
Hi Don,

It's an idiosyncrasy of the algorithm such that it things those two piece at the end are distinct trails since they do not cross each other for a fair distance.

You can solve it by dragging one of the last points over to create an intersection.  See the attached file.  It ends up as one track line after running the network code on it.

Cheers

« on: October 19, 2012, 11:08:34 AM »
Hey Dave,

Sorry about the issue -- and the late response.  Looks like I am not getting notifications here for some reason.

What GPS are you using?

It's hard to imagine what could be corrupted that would cause that, but I've never heard of that issue before either.  You could try going to default settings by deleting your .ini file.

To reset back to default settings, first close TopoFusion.  Then delete (or rename to keep a backup) the file TopoFusion.ini.  It should be here:

C:\Documents and Settings\*Your USER NAME*\Local Settings\Application Data\TopoFusion\TopoFusion.ini

Or for older installs:

C:\Program Files\TopoFusion\TopoFusion.ini

Let us know how it goes.  Thx.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: US Topo server issues or some other problem?
« on: October 02, 2012, 08:25:18 AM »
Is it giving you download tiles and then the 'having trouble contacting' error?  Or just not showing the maps?

Regardless, you can try going to Options->Preferences->General and changing your Map Directory to a new location.  That'll reset your cache.  Restart TF and see if the tiles load.

Let me know how it goes.

Looks like NASA's onearth server has stopped responding today, 9/28/12.

Check this link to see if it is back up yet:

Downtimes do happen, but they are usually short.  TopoFusion will be unable to download Landsat or Elevation data in the meantime.

Thanks for the patience.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: BLM Ownership layer is working
« on: September 13, 2012, 04:23:03 PM »
Right, the Ownership Layers works with BLM data only -- before it contained USFS, NPS and other data.  A new install of TF includes this BLM-only string for land ownership.  It's just unfortunate that they removed a lot of the useful data from it.

For a while they kept a backup server with the old data, but that disappeared.  I have tried to find another source, but have been unsuccessful so far.

Thanks for the post.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Zooming on an exported map
« on: September 07, 2012, 03:17:53 PM »
Sorry, I must have missed this post.  Are you importing the OSM map as a custom map?  If so, once calibrated it should stay in place and zoom with all the other maps.  Is not what you are seeing?  Sounds like maybe you imported the map but did not finish the calibration process?  It does show as filling the screen (no matter the zoom) during that process....

Hope that helps.

324
No direct support for either of those... but I plan to add some better ways to import pre-calibrated maps into TF.  PNG with JPR is one possibility for sure.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: How to delete tracks
« on: August 21, 2012, 02:16:58 PM »
Are you sure the tracks are actual GPX files that are loaded, and not being displayed, perhaps from a GPS download (or Astro live tracking in progress)?  Those wouldn't be selectable until you save them out to a GPX file that is loaded below in the active file list.

One easy way to tell -- go to the active file list and hit "CTRL-A" to grab everything.  Then right click and choose "Disable All" -- then see if the tracks are still being displayed.  If they are, they must be from other source, so they probably won't be selectable.

Hope that helps.

Hi,

I don't think anything you can do with association will help in this case.  We just need to make TF respond to a .tfv file upon starting up.  I'll make a note to do it for the next version.

Thanks for the post!

Thanks for pointing this out -- will be an easy fix!

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Transfer Maps to New Install ?
« on: August 17, 2012, 10:53:10 AM »
Hi Don,

All you need is the mapIndex.dat file and every MapsX.dat file that is in your map directory.  It could be quite large (each is ~650mb), but if you copy them over and set the map directory appropriately, you should be good to go!

TopoFusion Basic / Re: Track Contains No Elevation Data
« on: August 14, 2012, 04:40:40 PM »
Strange, the elevation data loaded instantly for me.  (File attached).

Are you able to download new map tiles elsewhere?  Could be a firewall issue.

Another thing to try is go to Options->Preferences.  Change the map data directory to something new (perhaps create a new folder) so that you reset your map cache.  That might give it a fresh start and successfully load the elevation data you need.

TopoFusion Basic / Re: Track Contains No Elevation Data
« on: August 14, 2012, 10:43:17 AM »
Hi,

Are you still in the US (and below 60* latitude) ?  TF cannot download elevation data for extreme latitudes.  It may also have been that due to network or server hiccup it couldn't get elevation data in time.  I would open up the program again and give it a try.

It's usually fast enough that by the time you draw it (and especially when adding elevation after) it will be there.

If you're still having issues, give me a rough coordinate and I can check it out.

Best,

Scott

Hey Joe -- try updating to v4.65 -- it fixes some server issues.  Open Aerial is still missing some high res tiles in areas, but otherwise is up and working.  Color should be 100% in 4.65.

TopoFusion Basic / Re: trails map making
« on: August 08, 2012, 02:23:29 PM »
Robbie,

How high of an export have you pushed it to?  Most computers should be able to go to 7000x7000 (or one dimension at 7000) which at 300 DPI would give you ~23 inches -- a pretty large printout.  Do you need larger posters than that?

For printing legibility be sure to experiment with different map types -- some are better than others depending on the application.

Don,

I did not get to the centering fix on this go-round.  This was pretty much just a server fix release.  Sorry.  My development computer is on the fritz, so it'll be a little while before I can dig back into it.  Your Sept 12 deadline should be no problem to hit.  Feel free to bug me about it in a couple weeks from now, get it back in the forefront.

Old topo's have been working fine every time I have tried them -- where are you looking?

TopoFusion Anouncements / v4.65 - Server fixes
« on: August 07, 2012, 12:24:27 PM »

We've pushed out a new version of both TopoFusion Basic and Pro to address some server changes.  The changes on the server end have rendered older versions of TopoFusion unable or hindered in downloading tiles from the Color Aerial tileset ("Color") and newly added US Topo tilesets.  So if you have been experiencing "TopoFusion is having trouble contacting..." errors, or missing map tiles, you will want to update to the latest.  We've also cleaned up a few things in the error handling of some other tilesets, and enabled batch downloading and combo blending for the reinstated MSRMaps tilesets, as requested.

We have bigger changes in the works, but not ready for prime time yet.  Just needed to get this very important maintenance release out.  Check it out below.

All indications in the log point to capable hardware.  TF really should run well even on the weakest of graphics cards... it even runs on one of my very old netbooks (one of the first). So something must be going on -- maybe search for a new graphics driver?

Lack of OpenGL support shouldn't matter.

Yeah, enter the width and height at the top of the Export dialog.

Try something like 3000x3000.  Or set one of them to 3000 and let the other one be set proportionally (it'll change when you change it).

TopoFusion Basic / Re: trails map making
« on: August 06, 2012, 04:24:42 PM »
Robbie,

It sounds like you are using the "Export View" function, right?  In order to get more detail, set the resolution of the export to something higher than what it defaults to (which is the same size as your screen).  If you go to 3000x3000 or so, you should get a pretty detailed map for printing.  You can figure out the DPI you're printing, the size of the paper, and do an exact export that way, too.  Most computer should be able to go up to 7000x7000 or so.

Hope that helps.

TopoFusion Anouncements / Re: v4.6 - MSRMaps is back!

I'm glad the MSRMaps are back! I found the overlaying feature of topo over the black & white aerials very useful to my scouting new land for bowhunting. Saddly, the MSRMaps have been written out of the combo blending feature. They are also gone from the batch loading feature.
I'm putting in a vote to replace that functionality in the next version.

You got it.  See v4.65 with combo and batch loading back on for the MSRmap tilesets.  Thanks for the comment!

Hey guys,

I have a new version that corrects some server issues, especially with Color Aerial and US Topo.  I am still seeing holes in the Open Aerial coverage and have changed the software to display a "no map" message when that is the case.  So behavior is a little better (less waiting to see if tiles load), but hopefully they will work the bugs out eventually.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Base map not visible after loading Shape File
« on: July 21, 2012, 08:48:51 AM »
Hi,

Most likely the shapefile didn't load up in the correct place.  There's a problem in the current release of TF where it doesn't know what UTM zone the data is in (the shapefile format doesn't store it, for some strange reason).  The software assumes the data is in the zone you are in...

So, the temporary solution is to load up some GPX data or otherwise get TF centered in more or less the area you're in, then reload or load the file.  See if that fixes the issue.

Sorry, shapefile is a very frustrating format, and we are still working on the loading part of it.

Part of the loss of clarity is due to the way the map is projected.  This relates to another current post here on the board.  I plan to change the projection to better display OSM (and other) maps in TF in a future version.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: OSM font size
« on: July 20, 2012, 09:44:20 PM »
Sorry, there isn't a way to adjust the size directly.

You can, however, experiment with the "Tileset preference" setting in Options->Preferences->Tilesets.  It changes when the software switches to new zoom levels.  If you choose a setting closer to the right (expand lower) you'll get to see the lower tilesets for longer which should result in larger font sizes.

Hope that helps.

Open Aerial has been having some issues on the highest resolution set of tiles.  There is a user here (Roger) that has been working with them to try to get the tiles back online.  I don't think it's an issue with internet access.

The Color set has also had some issues lately, too.  Sorry about that.  It's not anything wrong with your system.
