Feature Requests / Re: "Combine" Function for Tracks
« on: April 22, 2016, 04:34:39 PM »

Hi Bill,

Great suggestion.  If I understand correctly, what you're asking for is already there, in fact!

If you select multiple *files* in the active file list, you can right click and then do "merge files and save as...".  It will keep all the tracks separate and let you write out a new GPX file.

Hope that does it for you!

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Refreshing Color Tiles
« on: April 22, 2016, 09:35:53 AM »
Hi Bill,

For certain tilesets you can force refresh for the whole thing -- particularly open streets, open aerial, etc.   Go to Options->Tilesets->Expire Maps.

Or, if you only need a few, use the refresh maps tool to click on tiles individually.

Best,

Scott

Hi Alistair,

Thanks for the post.  The source for TF is the same SRTM1 30m data available from the USGS.  It's the best free source I know of for outside the US.

I am not sure if google's elevation service is any better for SA or not.

Hope that helps.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Live tracking w/Garmin Nuvi
« on: March 13, 2016, 03:39:09 PM »
Hi there,

Let's see.  There are so many Nuvi models that it is hard to know exactly, but the mode used for live tracking is important.  Your GPS may or may not support one or both.  The two are NMEA and Garmin's PVT protocol.  TopoFusion supports both, but it won't look for both.  You'll need to try them both.  It's a matter of getting the unit into live tracking mode sometimes, as well, but often that is automatic.

So if you tried Garmin mode, try NMEA, or the other way around, and let me know how it goes.

Thanks!

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Joining tracks that are in opposite directions.
« on: February 08, 2016, 06:54:40 PM »
Hi George,

Thanks for the post.  This is something a lot of folks run into.

You can do exactly what you want to do (reverse as you merge) using TopoFusion.  You just need to dig into the right click menu.  Once you add a segment to your merged track, right click anywhere on the map to get the menu to come up.  You can then reverse the last segment added to match up the way you want.  The key is to get the first segment you click on going the direction you want, then reverse any subsequent segments afterward, as you go.

Hope that helps, if it's not clear what I mean, don't hesitate to ask more questions!

Unfortunately the server for both of those tilesets hasn't been working well lately.  You'll need to try myTopo instead.

Thanks for the patience.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Trouble Exporting View
« on: January 31, 2016, 10:17:01 AM »
Hi,

Which tileset are you trying to export for?  It does indeed look like it's trying to download missing tiles (possibly much higher resolution than your current view).  If it's the older Topo 4m / Topo 16m tiles, they probably won't load at this time due to the inconsistent server.

Couple things to try:

1) different tileset, like myTopo
2) smaller area to export
3) Tileset preference: use Current

The last one will keep the zoom level from needing to download too many new maps.

Hope that helps some.

Thanks for the diff file, that helps.

I don't notice too many things amiss.  My only thought is that perhaps it's the "NumThreads=25" line.  It could be that the VM has a limit on # of threads for a process?  The default is 15, but maybe you cranked it to 25 and that caused total thread failure.

If you want to try setting it at 25, do let me know (it works fine on my native machine).  I'd appreciate the help debugging.

Thanks.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Stuck "downloading" tiles
« on: January 15, 2016, 12:35:56 PM »

You've got it well covered.  I think you might be right on the thread part, though, if Windows is running and a web browser is running, it's hard to believe a couple of download threads wouldn't be starting up just fine.  There would probably be some indication of that in the log, too.

Well, last ditch would be to reset your .INI file -- if you can find it (may be buried in a windows location, might be right where TopoFusion.exe is) you can just move it to a different directory and then start TF so you get a fresh one.  Or there is a shortcut link in the TF program group that will reset the INI file for you ("Reset TF to default settings").

If THAT doesn't get tiles downloading, we'll have to look deeper.  Could be some odd internet setting in the INI that I don't quite have the right check against.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Stuck "downloading" tiles
« on: January 15, 2016, 10:56:09 AM »
That's the expected result in a new directory with no tiles being successfully downloaded.

So... your map cache is OK.

Something is preventing it from downloading tiles.  I assume you are trying multiple map types, with the same result?

Could Windows firewall now be blocking TF, given all the silly updates the OS did?

163
TopoFusion Pro / Re: Stuck "downloading" tiles
« on: January 15, 2016, 10:16:02 AM »

Gotcha.

Well, I suppose next thing to try is changing your map cache directory to a new and empty one, then restart TF.  See if that allows download of new tiles.

That'll tell us what's going on.

Looks like the tiles are not being loaded into a D3D surface, which means they won't display.  Here's the line of code:

hr = D3DXLoadSurfaceFromFileInMemory(surf,0,0,buf+ii,buflen-ii,0,D3DX_FILTER_NONE,0,0);

Best of luck!

Hi,

Thanks for the log and sorry about the issue!

It looks like TopoFusion is perfectly happy with your map cache and the index file, since it did get updated yesterday.  The files wouldn't be 'touched' until you close the software, assuming no new tiles were successfully downloaded.

I'm not super familiar with how parallels works, but is it possible your whole VM is being blocked on port 80?  Can you confirm a web browser works in Windows?

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Linux again

Hi,

Thanks for the post.  I believe I closed the auxiliary forums when I was losing the battle against spam.  I have some new protections that seem to be working much better, so perhaps I can re-enable them.

So here is the line of code that is failing:

ddrval = D3DXCreateTextureFromFileInMemoryEx(g_pd3dDevice,buffer,size,0,0,1,0,D3DFMT_UNKNOWN,D3DPOOL_MANAGED, D3DX_FILTER_NONE, D3DX_FILTER_NONE,colorkey,NULL,NULL,&texture);
DDCHECK(ddrval);

This line is called for loading things like the 'downloading' tile, arrows and points.  Basically these things are stored as 'resources' in the code (so a part of the executable), and the code is turning them from images into direct3D textures for quick drawing.

I'd guess the D3D part is working, but the resources aren't found or aren't correctly loaded (given the Invalid data message).

Hope that helps some.  Let us know how it goes!

Thanks

Unfortunately, MyTopo, OpenStreet and Open Cycle aren't rectified for use in Canada or Alaska.  There's marked skewing

That's true, in high latitudes there is horizontal distortion.  Things still work, and the rest of the software is functional along with the skewing, but it isn't ideal.  Southern Canada can be usable, but it's bad up in AK.

I'm hopeful we can move to a full mercator projection in TF and take care of this issue in the future.

Thanks for the post.

TopoFusion Anouncements / MSRMaps intermittent - use myTopo
« on: November 10, 2015, 10:01:18 AM »

Howdy folks,

Just wanted to make a quick announcement about the general stability of MSRmaps maps in TopoFusion.  Right now the server is not responding at all, so none of the classic topo tilesets will download (e.g. Topo16, Topo 4m).

We've received a number of emails from folks that have noticed, and we always respond that the myTopo maps should be used as the primary topo tileset.  MyTopo is much more reliable, and also has more recent and higher quality maps.

It's still nice to have the older Topos as a reference, and we do expect MSRMaps server will come back online soon, but it is highly likely that intermittent outages will continue.

Thanks!  Topo-on!

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the post.

I think you are right, and that the '...' button should really allow one to point the dialog at any GPX directory.  The ability to merge files and such there is a nice little feature and that would solve the SD card issue too -- just point it to whichever GPX dir you want.

Thanks

TopoFusion Basic / Re: select a section of a track to analyse?
« on: October 20, 2015, 07:26:22 AM »
Hi,

Sorry, the profile tool can only do stats for the entire track, or for a portion of a track from the *start* to any point in the middle (by mouse-over on the profile).

If you want a different starting point, you can use the scissors tool to cut the track at that point, then profile the rest of the track.  Be careful not to save out the file if you do this, though!

Thanks for the question.

Feature Requests / Re: Support of new FIT data types
« on: September 22, 2015, 08:29:59 AM »
Thanks for the post.  I'm not sure exactly what would make sense to display on the TF side.  All the leaderboards and such are tied to online content with lots of rich features best viewed on strava or garmin connect directly, right?  Surely the actual leaderboards aren't stored in FIT files -- maybe just a link to the relevant segments?  I guess if there is a way to link to and find segments, that would be cool.

Glen,

I see -- something like a Heads Up Display with a large readout would be cool.  There are a couple other TF users that would find this useful (one that does training videos of road rides to watch while riding a computrainer or other indoor trainer).

You can get the position on the elevation plot using the profile tool and singletrack playback, though.

Cheers

Hi Glenn,

Very cool, thanks for the post.  Have you tried single track playback available inside the profile window?  It will show position on the profile as well as live stats.  Also there is the elevation checkbox on multi-track playback.

I've had good luck using a program called 'CamStudio' to capture TF screen grabs directly into a movie, as well.  That might save you a step.

Cheers

Hey everyone,

It looks like we are in the middle of an extended outage of MSRmaps.com.

You can check the status by going direct to: http://msrmaps.com/

I recommend using myTopo, TopoUS or openCycleMap in the meantime.

Thanks for the patience.

Hi Ted,

Thanks for the post.  This is a good question.

If you have drawn this in based on multiple tracks in the area, I would tend to trust this track.  It looks pretty good to me... perhaps only very slightly short if I had to guess.

It would be interesting to compare tracklogs for people that are claiming 7+ miles.  I bet we would see a lot of error.  Running GPS units + tree cover = a fair bit of error.  And error tends to increase the distance, in most cases.

Hope that helps.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Inserting track points issue.
« on: May 12, 2015, 08:31:12 AM »
Hi there,

The software tries to interpolate values when you insert a new one.  It may not be doing it correctly for HR/Power/Cad.  It makes sense to do it for elevation and time, though.

One simple fix is to use the "Strip power/cad/hr" function on the track first.  Then you should remain at "NO DATA" for all.  I will take a look at what it's doing when there is data.

Thanks,

Hi Roger,

Thanks for the note.

I'm seeing good response from the server on my end.  But coverage for the USGS aerials has never been complete.  I would guess that sometimes the coverage varies as they change what's available on the server.

I think it's supposed to be better imagery near urban areas.

Best,

Hi Seebonk,

I hadn't thought of having "point #" be a choice for the x-axis -- that might be an interesting way to view the data or debug it, as you said.

You know about the "info" tool mode that lets you hover over points, right?  It's also a good tool for debugging.

I'll look into adding "point #" as an axis choice.  Thanks for the suggestion!

Hey Wayne,

It's the same map source, but the maps in TF are shown in a different projection, thus the horizontal stretching.

Since the majority of map servers are going to the google style tiles, I will likely change the software to operate that way on a base level in the future.

Happy 2015!

« on: December 12, 2014, 10:03:03 AM »
Hey Tom,

I see what you are asking but you can't do it just by clicking unfortunately.  That could be a good idea for a new feature if it could be done intuitively.

You can of course cut the track... or often I just use the profile tool, zoom in on the profile, then eyeball it.

Another idea is to use "Lap Analysis" to place waypoints every 0.1 miles.  That's about the resolution of the cues or of a GPS/cyclo-computer, so eyeballing to the tenth of a mile is usually sufficient.

Thanks for the question.

Hi,

Good question.

Most likely the number in TF is too high.  Did you try loading the file up in Climbing Analysis to see what different numbers come up?  I would guess that the "Training Center" setting there might be closer to what Strava computes.  Basically they are probably filtering the data in a simple way.

On the other hand, it may just be a difference in GPS units -- many Edge units are known for inflating climbing numbers.

I haven't compared too many rides on Strava lately (haven't uploaded any for a couple years) but probably will this winter.  It'll be interesting to see how they compare.
