Roger that, I misunderstood.  I will have a look at the installer.

Hi,

On #1, there is a setting in Preferences for 'default tracks directory', setting that should take care of that.  And, if Program Files\TopoFusion doesn't exist (does it?) it should default to where ever TopoFusion.exe is.  Hmm.

#2 - agreed, that's on the list, just didn't get to it in the last round.

Thanks!

Beta Testing / Beta v3.87 out! Shaded Relief
« on: September 06, 2009, 11:39:25 AM »
I'm happy to announce version 3.87 is out, featuring shaded relief.

Same scene, no relief, for comparison:

To turn it on, look for this toggle:
(or find it in the Map menu as a checked menu option).

Various options are found in Window->Blending / Shaded Relief.  You may or may not want to have it draw shaded relief on every frame, or perhaps play with the detail level setting.  On my computer the display is acceptable on the middle (default) setting and with it drawing shaded relief on all frames.  Please let me know if you have any feedback here.  I hope to make it faster in the future, but I find it quite usable as is.  I'm just a bit of a stickler when it comes to speed and I know it can be faster.  Maybe in the next version...

For those that have been having issues with the Batch Download tool, I apologize.  This version includes some significant improvements and I have tested with some large batches.  Downloading gigabytes of data from a host of servers is never going to be an exact process, but it's now faster, better reported and much, much more robust.  Specifically, the tool will not report 'finished' until it has verified that every tile requested is present on disk.

Also there are a number of small but nice changes elsewhere in the program:

Quote
3.87 – [9/5/09]  (Beta)

Added Shaded Relief to all maps types
-   New toggle on toolbar and in Map menu
-   Options (detail, light angle, etc) are in Window->Blending / Shaded Relief
Added “Land Ownership” WMS layer for federal/state/county land boundaries
  For legend see: http://topofusion.com/images/federal-legend.gif
Multiple improvements in Batch Download robustness, speed and reporting
Added checkboxes for individual tilesets for both Color tileset and all
   Custom WMS servers
Added hover over ‘tooltiptext’ for filenames in the file chooser
Added .prj (projection info) file to shapefile exports
Added ability to read polygons in .kml files (as lines)
Fixed DEM tile border issues in 3D mode (was visible in some cases)
Fixed yellow (highlighted) stats being displayed in multi-playback
Changed time format for multiplayback to 12 hour (am/pm)
CTRL-A now selects all in active file list and track and waypoints lists

Ah!  The land ownership layer is quite useful, especially for those of use that like to plan new routes, especially long distance ones.  Any feedback regarding the accuracy/detail of this layer is gladly welcome.  I'm pretty excited about it.  By the way, the data comes from a BLM server.  Check out the legend:

Larry, thanks for your experience.  As far as I know Terraserver is OK with many persistent connections, but some of the color aerial servers don't like them.  In one of the recent betas I simply disabled persistent connections (even if it's checked) for all color aerial servers, and that seems to have cleared up a bunch of issues for people.

Steve -- there is a new beta version out with much improved batch downloading.  Missing tiles should be a thing of the past, and hopefully less 'server error' messages, faster downloads, etc.  Let me know if you have a chance to test it.

Hi,

There is a new beta out.  I revamped the batch download tool.  Hopefully it will behave a lot better, and the option for different tilesets (e.g. color) is there.

Let me know if you have a chance to try it.

Also, send an email if you need info on how to get the beta.

Glad to hear things are working better for you.  Might be something similar happening here.  There are definitely other users on Vista 64 that have no issues.

I'm not sure exactly how to approach this one.  It's worth a look in the TF diagnostic file (there's a link to it in the TF start menu group).  If you could email me that file or paste it here that might shed some light.

Otherwise I will see if I can find/fabricate a Vista64 system to see if I can do some testing.  Or I'll keep thinking, too.

TopoFusion Basic / Re: Printing From TopoFusion Basic
« on: September 03, 2009, 07:11:18 PM »
You can't directly print a track map + profile.  But you can export a map image with a profile at the bottom, then use a graphics program to print it.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Is there any way to delete map files
« on: September 03, 2009, 07:41:20 AM »
There's no way to delete maps like you describe.  So yes, pretty much you need to start over if the collection of map files are too large.

Very strange that it blew up like that.  So far I've seen the size estimates to be slightly above what the resulting files are.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Batch download woes

Hmmm... I have not tested much with Vista64 myself, however I do know of a small handful of users, two of which are big time users of the software, and have tested the batch download function.  So, I'm not sure.  You said on a 'home computer', is the Vista64 computer somewhere else with a different connection?

I do wonder about the box not showing up -- a graphics glitch like that suggests a video card issue.  Updating drivers is the usual prescription.

The next beta (out very soon hopefully!) has the color (and WMS server tilesets) split out by resolution so you can do 0.015 only, or avoid 0.003 or whatever.  You may want to wait a bit and use that.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Problems saving gpx files in Vista
« on: September 02, 2009, 09:27:34 PM »
Hmm, this is the first I've heard of any problems saving out files, in any operating system.  Many users run Vista without issue.

In case (1) do you mean the GPX file exists, or does it also get loaded the next time you start up TF?  The only way it could load up is if TF closed cleanly so the .ini file gets written out with the newly drawn/saved file listed in the 'to be loaded' section.

Unfortunately the only way to save out calibration info is to close the program.  I aim to change the way calibration info is stored (perhaps in a file in the same dir as the image), making it easy to save out calibration info as the calibration is made.

In both cases 1) and 2), is TF crashing and giving an error, or does it just hang and you end up killing it?

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Batch download woes
« on: September 02, 2009, 08:24:37 AM »
I can't account for it.  I just downloaded 200mb of topo 4meters and the file was smaller than the estimate.

Are you sure one of the other tilesets wasn't toggled?

There is a beta version out already that should result in less error messages when downloading.  Speaking of which, were you getting download errors when you were manually panning around?

1116
TopoFusion Pro / Re: Batch download woes
« on: September 02, 2009, 07:17:46 AM »
Hmm.  The estimate was 8 gigs, or the resulting map files were 8 gig?

Then when you panned through the rest of the area the map file only grew by 1 gig?

Did you go back and verify that all tiles had been downloaded in the area you manually scanned through?

TopoFusion Pro / Re: drawing profiles
« on: September 01, 2009, 05:00:35 PM »
Yeah, with option one you need to add quite a few points.  You only get elevations at the points on the track.

What is needed is a way to automatically generate points at a regular interval, as you draw.  It would not be hard to add, but most people use the draw tool to trace routes and would prefer fewer points, not more.   An option for this kind of drawing, or perhaps in the spline dialog simply an add intermediate points function.  I would find this useful so I'll add it to the list.

1118
TopoFusion Pro / Re: drawing profiles
« on: September 01, 2009, 04:43:04 PM »
Draw straight?   ;D

Other options:

Using the select points tool, select an end point and hit the insert key.  This will insert point(s) on the segments adjacent to the selected points.  Their elevation gets interpolated, so you will need to use Climbing Analysis to then add elevation to the track after you have added intermediate points.

Another alternative is to use the 'spline' function (right click on the track and choose simplify/split/spline).  However, I am not sure how it works with a track with only two points.  You may need to add an intermediate point or two first.

Then, once splined, add elevation from climbing analysis.

« on: September 01, 2009, 04:28:38 PM »
Well, you are limited by the server's bandwidth and also intermediate steps.  Perhaps I am closer (in 'hops') to the server than you are.

I am adjusting a few things with respect to the error messages in the current version.  It may perform better for you.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: drawing profiles
« on: September 01, 2009, 04:26:56 PM »
What version are you using?  As of v3.80 tracks automatically get elevation as you draw them, so the profile should be there.

How did you draw the track?  Did you hold the mouse button down as you drew from one point to another, or did you just click twice?  It does need to get points in between your line-of-sight end points.  Try redrawing if this is the case.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Batch download woes
« on: September 01, 2009, 02:10:06 PM »
I just downloaded almost a gig of color aerials in South Carolina in under an hour.  Added a bunch of 2M topos and they show up fine.  Aerial 64 will download quickly (there are not many of them) so it is unlikely it was from the batch download.

I recommend saving out the areas you download so you remember what you have.

You cannot do a batch download across zone boundaries in regular topo mode.  There is a WMS server called TopoWMS that you may want to look at.  It had topos that cross zone boundaries if it's really a problem.  However, you still can only draw download boxes within a single zone.

Re: 6 months later.  It will not overwrite with new maps unless there were no maps in an area before.  You would need to start over if there is reason to believe the maps have been updated.  Or, add the server as a custom WMS server and thereby start a new tileset.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Batch download woes
« on: September 01, 2009, 11:54:08 AM »
Yep, you can pretty easily transfer the maps to a new computer.  Just copy all the MapsX.dat files and the mapindex.dat file.

That's troubling that TF is not restarting the download.  I will do some testing in South Carolina today.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Batch download woes
« on: September 01, 2009, 10:03:37 AM »
Right after you draw the box (by holding down the mouse button starting at the upper left corner and going to the lower right) it should show up in black.  You can save it if you want, then you'll have a record of where you downloaded.

You are emphatically not redownloading the same tiles every time.  Any tile downloaded is saved and will not be downloaded again.

Can you explain a little more about why you have to start over?  The message says 'restarting in 60 seconds' -- does it keep giving that message, or just no messages at all?

1/4 of South Carolina is a pretty large area.  Look at the disk space estimate.  If it's several gigabytes of data it isn't realistic to expect the download to be quick.

1124
TopoFusion Pro / Re: Batch download woes
« on: September 01, 2009, 06:58:17 AM »
OK, what happens when you draw a box?  Doesn't the 'batch download' dialog come up?  The box is then drawn in black.  You don't have to save the file to a gpx file.  If you hit "Start Download" it should then start downloading for that box.

At what point does the software go to 'not responding' ?

I will update the instructions for batch downloading since a lot has changed, but it sounds like you've uncovered a bug.

User Projects / Re: Current Forest Service Topo's
« on: August 31, 2009, 11:15:30 AM »
Yeah, if you have large user maps checked (turned on), the software loads them on start up and can be a bit slow.  If you loaded a bunch of them it'd be prohibitive for sure.  I need to make it only load them when they become visible on the screen, moving the delay to when panning over to the map(s).

Tif requires a tif library -- I didn't like the options last time I looked., but I will look again.

TopoFusion Basic / Re: Can't find city
« on: August 31, 2009, 10:18:47 AM »
Yep, the 'find city' function uses the GIS layers for its search.

Go to "Window->GIS Layers" and hit the 'download' button on either/both of 'Major NA Cities' and 'ALL US Cities'.  That should redownload/overwrite those files.

User Projects / Re: Current Forest Service Topo's
« on: August 27, 2009, 01:01:25 PM »
These are nice looking maps.  Too bad they are only for national forests, not everywhere...

I don't think a tileset makes sense, however we could add tiff support as well as tfw (calibration info) file reading.  That would make these maps pretty easy to add as user maps in TF.

Larry -- that's interesting about the topo lines.  Wonder how/why that happened.

« on: August 27, 2009, 08:14:50 AM »
Steve,

Well, at least there's some improvement.  Nothing changed in the batch download tool code as far as tiles downloaded, already present, etc.  So I can't explain the difference you noted there.

I'll keep testing, but so far I have yet to see it complete a download and have missing tiles.  I also am not getting any 'downloading disabled' messages during the batch download.  Granted I have only done moderate sized batches.

You might try decreasing the number of download threads.  The most recent batch I did was with 8 threads and it didn't seem to be any slower than 25.  For terraserver more definitely helps, but perhaps not for AZ color aerials.

« on: August 25, 2009, 09:00:21 PM »
That is awesome.  I was kidding.  I never met a program that let me adjust it before.

The North East thinks the sun rises on it.  And of course, California thinks the sun sets on it.

:)

I'm just having fun with it.  I read a few papers about shaded relief and sometimes it is advantageous to change the 'sun' direction.  I added it just to experiment.  In many cases it makes it hard to read the terrain (to me) if it's not from the northwest.

Still playing with it, but hope to have a beta soon.

Terraserver is the only one I know of with completely free access to USGS maps, and yep there are some issues especially in California.

I'll be there is a CA-only server with topos on (I've found a few servers for other states).  It'd be worth a look.

Beta Testing / Re: v3.83 released
« on: August 24, 2009, 12:13:26 PM »
Sorry, didn't mean to confuse the issue.  The AZ server is a part of the Color tileset - which is made up of multiple servers.  Most of the servers host multiple states, but AZ is its own, which can account for different behavior, that's all.

Any better/worse/same?

Beta Testing / Re: v3.83 released
« on: August 23, 2009, 05:55:03 PM »
Steve,

Yep, others have reported that it will finish and still have missing tiles, even with a second pass.  Generally this has only been with people who are having connection issues, and most of this was fixed in 3.85.

I plan to make it continue making passes until everything is definitely downloaded in a future version.

I just put out v3.86 (beta) with what fixed AZ color aerial downloads for me (AZ is its own server).  Please let me know if it works any better for you.

It's very possible you were getting connection errors from queue'd up color aerials, even when you were in topo/aerial (Terraserver) display mode.  So, hopefully this fixes it for you.

Thanks.

TopoFusion Anouncements / V3.85 Released - Batch Downloading
« on: August 23, 2009, 01:08:40 PM »

TopoFusion Pro version 3.85 is out now, in both full and free forms.  The biggest feature addition is the wholly revamped Batch Download Tool.  This tool allows you to automatically grab massive amounts of map data and store it locally for use offline, or just for use in general.  The tool provides space and time estimates and allows you to select which map tilesets you want.  Included in this release also is the ability to batch download color aerials as well as maps from any WMS server.

We also added color aerials for the state of Maine, bringing our high resolution color imagery coverage in the United States to all but 5 states.  See Color Coverage for more info on color aerial coverage, including an updated map.  These aerials come from a variety of servers.

Head over to the Download Page to try TopoFusion out, free of charge.

Registered users refer to your registration email for the download link, or go here to request your code and the download URL.

Hi,

I am fairly certain that this was a bug in datum transformations (perhaps you recently changed to something other than WGS84?) that was introduced for a version or two and then subsequently fixed.

Try updating to the latest (3.85) version and let us know if you still experience this problem.

Thanks.

Beta Testing / Re: v3.83 released
« on: August 21, 2009, 01:05:09 PM »
It seems the server just periodically gives no response (zero bytes).  Not sure why, or if TF users have anything to do with it.

But, I think something changed recently with respect to when TF throws a "can't contact" error and turns off downloading.  I've made it more tolerant of bad / no response.

You are right that batch downloading just drives TF downloads, so there won't be much difference except the automatic re-trying.  I'm downloading about 100 mb of color tiles from AZ right now and haven't yet seen any disabling of downloading.

If it is successful, I'll put out a beta soon.  May have to disable the shaded relief stuff, I guess.

Thanks Steve.

With the Merge tool the profile window still comes up and shows your current 'work in progress'.  Is it not coming up for you?  Some people argued to not have the profile come up, but I find it very useful to see if I'm merging things correctly.

That would be handy to be able to add elevation to the currently in process merged track.  I do suspect, however, that this is less of an issue now that every drawn track is automatically assigned elevation as it goes.  Maybe?

The feedback is always appreciated, thanks.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Shift-click & Profile tool?
« on: August 18, 2009, 08:38:32 AM »
Yeah, the functionality was split out into the merge tool instead.  It wasn't very intuitive for some people to have to shift click, though it does make sense to me.

I guess there isn't too much harm in allowing shift merging with the profile tool, but it's not that much harder to just grab the merge tool instead.

Maybe you can explain a bit more what you mean by "I see I can accomplish the same thing by creating a new track using the Merge tool, but this isn't as convenient when just messing around planning rides for example."

I'd consider adding it back, for sure.
