TopoFusion Pro / Re: USGS Imagery not downloading
« on: October 11, 2017, 09:04:51 AM »
That server has always been somewhat limited coverage, but it does look like it might not be responding right now.

I'll check it in a day or so and if it's still out will take a closer look.

Thanks

Scott

Now, how often do you see a dialog like this in any tech forum?
Good job, to both of you!

Bill

Thanks for the compliment -- TF has been lucky to have a number of good users over the years, providing feedback, debugging issues, etc.  I'm in debt to many of you for the help.

Feature Requests / Re: Set zoom level
« on: October 05, 2017, 04:07:16 PM »
That's a pretty good idea to be able to set it directly.  It is useful when making maps.

The "Export TopoFusion View Parameters" was added for map creation, too.  The files look like this:

Quote
TopoFusion viewport parameters
UTMposX=324848.547440
UTMposY=4114284.318567
UTMzone=12
UTMzoom=4.290416
WindowWidth=1942
WindowHeight=1042
TileSet=2285
ArrowInterval=-170
ArrowSize=0.60
ArrowAlpha=178
WaypointIconSize=1.50

If you export one of these you can edit UTMzoom to 4.88 (or whatever).  .TFV files can be dragged/dropped into TF to move the viewport and set the zoom.

Let me know if that doesn't work for your needs.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Open Aerial & Mapquest OSM tiles watermarked
« on: October 03, 2017, 08:51:03 AM »

I agree that it is obnoxious.  Unfortunately there isn't much we can do about it (other than complain to mapquest, perhaps, but then the tiles are free).

I could make the tile size larger (four times the total area) which would reduce the clutter, but the watermark would still be there.  It's a bit of a development cost for me, without much of a change, so I haven't been motivated.  The Color tileset is still pretty good and there is also the hidden GE tiles (message me if you don't know about them).

TopoFusion Pro / Re: GPX Name text on map?
« on: October 02, 2017, 07:32:08 PM »
Hi,

Seems like a pretty good strategy to me.  There isn't a way to display the name of a file in the map in TF, unfortunately.  You could certainly add such text as waypoints, but that might be tedious if you have a number of files loaded?

A toggle that shows the names (and numbers, when there are multiple tracks per file) is a pretty good idea.  I can't guarantee it wouldn't get cluttered in some cases, but it would help for your projects and also in identifying tracks.

Thanks for the post.

Thanks, but I am pretty sure I see it, indeed a circular loop in a linked list, as you correctly diagnosed.

I will address this bug in the next beta and release.  Many thanks for point it out!

Good work with the debugging.  Thank-you, very helpful.

How many images are we talking about here roughly?  I can throw a bunch at it and do some testing.

Fixed in v5.47, available to registered users:

Hi,

Thanks for the post.  I can confirm that I'm seeing this in 5.46 as well.  Sorry about the bug!

The Batch Download tool is pretty limited these days due to most servers not allowing batch download (per terms of service) but there are still a few that are OK.  I must have overlooked the tool in testing 5.46.

I'll see if a quick beta can fix it.  Thanks.

Beta Testing / v5.46 - SSL refount error
« on: August 07, 2017, 02:01:54 PM »
Hi all,

In this version we need some help with an "SSL refcount" error that is mysteriously random.
We think v5.46 should take care of it, but if you do encounter it (when downloading tiles)
please let us know, or submit a crash report using the crash reporter.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Unable to download most maps
« on: June 10, 2017, 06:27:03 PM »
Hi there,

Thanks for the post.  Unfortunately all of the maps you have listed are now deprecated -- the servers are gone.  MyTopo and Color are the most reliable tilesets to use.

I have tried to find a replacement for the BLM ownership layer, but they have not brought that service back online yet.

I will be removing the older Topo, BW Aerial and Urban tilesets from future versions of the software (people who have those tiles will still be able to use them, but they won't show up for new users).  I had hoped maybe MSRmaps server would come back, but it would seem not.

In short, nothing is amiss.  Look around at the other map types!  Oh, there is a watermark issue (API needed) on the open cycle map tiles that I will investigate this week.

TopoFusion Anouncements / v5.43 - Elevation download outage
« on: April 17, 2017, 10:28:38 AM »

Just a quick note that TopoFusion's source for elevation data is currently out.  All users will need to update to a new version of TopoFusion in order to restore it.

If you are experiencing widespread 'TopoFusion is having trouble contacting...' errors, this would explain it.

The fix is simple, and a new version will be out today.  Pushing it through now.

Thanks for the patience.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: USGS Imagery Follow Up
« on: March 27, 2017, 10:35:08 AM »

The URL didn't change, but the server did switch to only allowing HTTPS (secure) requests.  Luckily I added that ability in the last version.  There's a new beta that brings the USGS imagery back.  Fortunately they just restored the full res data to that layer (after some outages) in the last week or so.  So I'm planning a public release soon.

Thanks guys.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: 24HITOP File Consolidation???
« on: March 27, 2017, 10:32:50 AM »
Hi Tim,

I must admit that the 'lap analysis' tool is not well documented or obvious in its use.  It determines the start of the lap by the first point in the first track in the file.  You may need to trim down the first part of it in order to get it to behave better.

As for merging the files, which method did you use to merge?  Did you use the 'merge tool' to click on the tracks in succession?  Or just the 'merge files and save as...' option?  If the latter, it may be that one or more of the laps is stored across two files, so that lap really needs to be merged as a single track, across the files.  It can be tricky with overlapping data like that.

Apologies for missing this reply -- for some reason I didn't get an notification as I usually do on a new post.

Cheers and congrats on 15 laps, dang!

Thanks for the post, this info helps.  Quite a few scanners out there (avast, norton) will complain about the TopoFusion installer, especially in the first month or so after we release a new version.  The reason is it's a 'rare' or 'new' file that they haven't seen yet.

So, yes, please scan it and force install, or report as whitelist, whenever possible.  That does help us (and other TF users) out.

Downloads of the software are direct from our site, and only compiled on one development computer that I always maintain anti-virus on.  There is almost no chance that any of our installers would be malicious in any way.

I generally fill out the whitelist request form with Norton which each new version, but it is tedious and sometimes I forget.

Again, thanks for the post!

« on: January 17, 2017, 11:26:28 AM »

I replied to the other post, but here as well in case someone notices it in the beta:

Hi Roger,

I noticed that many tiles are black where there should be (used to be) USGS imagery as well.  There is a note on their site about a temporary outage they are working on, so I'm hoping that is it.  Since higher zoom levels are returning images, it makes sense.

Let's keep an eye on it for a week or so and see if it comes back.

Thanks for the post.

NZ was such a place to visit!  Make it happen.

Got a new beta version out with OpenTopoMap back.  They moved to requiring https (SSL) for their tiles.  Not sure why that change makes sense for tiles, but a USGS site also made that change, so the timing was good to dig into adding it to TF.

I see that OpenTopo works in the US now, as well (and NZ).  That's good news.

Thanks for the post on this -- much appreciated.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Window 10 issues?
« on: December 28, 2016, 05:42:54 PM »
Sorry about the continued issue -- it looks like a number of servers have changed this month.  I am out of country without my development computer for a few more weeks, but by early/mid Jan I should have all these servers back up.

I'd suggest getting your own API key for Mapquest tiles, then you should be able to get Open Aerials to come in.

Alternatively, send me a direct email and I can show you the hidden feature to get access to some google imagery.

Cheers.

Thanks for the note on this.  And for the detail with the moved and TCP trace.  That helps a lot.

It must have been somewhat recent as at the last release of TF it was working.

We'll get it updated in the next version.  Sadly I'm out of country (in NZ) and away from my dev computer a few more weeks, so it'll be mid-Jan.

Cheers!

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Track Shading??
« on: December 04, 2016, 12:22:54 AM »

Generally, the max/min for track shading is set by the set of tracks that you have open and active. Use the 'shade scale' under the Window menu to see what they are.  The colors are then just even increments between the max/min.

There are a few exceptions, where max and min might be set more reasonably, but that's generally it. Unfortunately there is no way to set it manually as of yet.

Thanks for the question.

TopoFusion Basic / Re: download ALL maps, all resolutions for a given area
« on: September 09, 2016, 08:38:08 PM »

There is a Batch Download feature in the Pro version.  However, it is a bit of a relic from older servers that tolerated that sort of behavior.  myTopo is one tileset for which it is not enabled, due licensing.

Unfortunately, scanning around and getting what you want is the best strategy at this point.

Have you thought about doing a massive "merge files and save as...." with all the possible bits and pieces, then go in and right click on pieces you don't want to do a "delete segment"?  That might be easier than doing lots of merges and deletes and such.

Hi,

Sorry about the belated response.  I didn't get a notification of the latest posts for some reason.

Address searches are on the same Mapquest limitation system that is making tile downloads not work.  I set up v5.30 to use a new free API that gives 15,000 requests, and have been alarmed how quickly TF users ate that up!

I plan to allow folks to enter their own API key.  Hopefully if we can get the power users on their own allotment, everyone else will be able to download tiles and search addresses.

Thanks for the patience in the meantime.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Trouble Joining Tracks
« on: July 12, 2016, 06:35:15 PM »
Hi,

A tutorial for this is long overdue from me!

The key thing is to take care as to the direction each track is going.  Particularly the direction of the first track you click on.  Make sure (using the profile tool that comes up) that it's in the direction you want, otherwise flip it.  Then as you click in succession it should behave much better.  You can always flip the last segment added to see if that fixes the odd joins.

Hope that helps!

Interesting, thanks for the links.  It appears that Terrain Navigator (what used to be called Maptech Terrain Navigator) itself is continuing on, and that it has a mobile app, still.  So the tile service may continue on, and there's nothing to suggest that myTopo's print based services are shutting down, either.

I'll keep looking, but it regardless if there is any way to get another source going, now is the time.

Thanks again.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: My Topo going dead?
« on: June 01, 2016, 07:15:23 PM »

Hi,

Thanks for the post.  I wasn't aware of this.  So they got bought by Trimble some years ago, but TF's agreement with them remained intact.  Is it possible they are only shutting down the paper map printing side of myTopo but keeping the tiles?  I think the Trimble phone apps still use them, so unless they have an alternate source, that would seem odd.

Any additional info on this, or that you could learn, would be appreciated.

Unfortunately the USGS servers don't seem to want to serve actual topos, though they certainly could.  I have one alternate topo server up my sleeve that I think TF can use, so there is still hope.  There's also a non-free option that I may be able to explore.

In short, I'll do everything I can do to make sure TF users still have a viable topo map source.

If you select an entry in the logbook, then hit 'edit this entry' you can change the activity type.  It'll show an icon for it.

The default icon for new entries added is set in Options->Preferences->General->User Type.

I believe you can do per-activity summaries for a date range, using the logbook, too.

Hi there,

Take a look at the logbook function.  It has an 'activity type' selector with different icons.  There isn't a way to see that data in the main TF window, though.

The size of the lower 'active list' and directory explorer should save between runs of the software.  The height of it is saved, at least, so maybe you are repeatedly changing the width as well?

Thanks for the post.
