DEMs amd converting them?
« on: October 16, 2006, 12:29:43 AM »
Hello,

Since I bought the software and I am new at it, I was looking through it and noticed that the 3D files are downloaded via internet and NOT stored on the HD of the computer.

I notice the second option of downloading the DEM files and then the converter to convert them to DEMs, but there are no instructions on HOW to use the converter. Bad enough to download EACH area in the county, but then there is a converter that isnt user friendly IMO since its a DOS based program.

What I need to know is there an easier way to get DEMS?

And two how do I use the converter? Sounds like it does only 1 file at a time, I would like something that would convert the whole batch at once without alot of riggamonroe, if you know what I mean? The 3D data will be very helpful in the field and I would hate to lose that feature.

Thanks

Grant

Correct.  Downloaded 3D data is not stored on the hard drive (yet).

For acquiring DEM data, see:

http://topofusion.com/3d.php

At the bottom there are detailed instructions on how to get large area DEM files from the seamless USGS site.  No conversion using the dos program is required.  You can use 3DEM to do it.  It's one file at a time, but you can get fairly large files with this method.

Or, wait until we tile and cache 3D data.

Is that your next version coming out? If so that is great news, but do you have an estimate of when the beta will be available that will cache 3d will be out?

Thanks

Hard to say.  We are making a lot of progress with the software, but there are so many things we want to do that I can't really estimate when something specific like this will actually happen.

Stay tuned to the beta forum...

Thanks, I cant wait to see your magic. :-)

Right now NG TOPO 4.0 has 3D ability and yet that Program is NO WHERE near as good as yours, The 3D feature will be a great addition later for those of use in field.
