Using Topofusion from a USB drive
« on: June 26, 2008, 07:22:51 AM »
It has been several years since I first asked this question, but I still don't have a resolution, so I thought I would address it again. Below is the original question, and the posts that followed.
Any ideas?'<img'>
Has anyone else had success/failure with this???

**************Postings from 2005**************

Just wondering if it is possible to set up my regestered version of Topofusion so that it will run from a USB drive. I would like to use it at work occationally, but I do not have install privilages. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

You would need to run the program "regsvr32" on GPSMaster.ocx in order for TopoFusion to run.  That tells windows where to find the .ocx file.  I'm not sure, but I think without priveledges you won't be able to do this.

That's really all the installer does besides copy the files and setup information for uninstall, etc.

I tried running "regsvr32" on GPSMaster.ocx with the following command line:

regsvr32 C:\Program Files\Topofusion\gpsmaster.ocx

but I get back an error message saying:

************************
DllRegisterServer in C:\Program Files\Topofusion\gpsmaster.ocx failed.
Return code was: 0x80040200
************************

any ideas???
or
is there any other way?
Thanks.

As of right now you do need install privileges in order to get TopoFusion to work.  That's why the "regsvr32" command failed.

We have a large client that needs to install on site license computers without admin privileges, so we are working on this.  I'm not sure how possible it is, but hopefully in the next couple weeks I'll have an answer.

I agree it would be nice to be able to just run in from a USB, and without leaving a footprint on the local machine.

The latest version of TopoFusion will run without admin privileges, however, admin is still required to install (primarily for the regsvr32 command required above).

So, right now it's not possible to have a clean USB drive version of TF.

It seems there's some interest -- I could put some time into a self-standing one available in a separate download.  It would probably be a fixed version though (not updated with feature editions and bug fixes).  Would that still be useful to you guys?
