USGS Imagery

Is anyone else having a problem with the USGS Imagery not downloading recently?

That server has always been somewhat limited coverage, but it does look like it might not be responding right now.

I'll check it in a day or so and if it's still out will take a closer look.

Thanks

USGS Imagery

Hello,
I'm using Beta V 5.47. The USGS Imagery Tiles are not downloading for me today.
Also, I haven't looked at "Preferences" for a long time.
Today I went to Options>Tile Sets.
I don't see the check boxes or tiles to down load.
See attachment.
I'm I missing something?
Thanks,
Roger

Roger -- that set of checkboxes being hidden is normal.  Almost all of the tilesets that used to appear there have gone away (e.g. Topo 4M, etc) so there wasn't a reason for it anymore.  It was removed in one of the last betas.

Since you both noticed this USGS problem just today I'm guessing it's relatively new.  The error I am seeing is:

"Could not access any GIS Server machines. Please contact your system administrator."

Let's give it a day or two to see if comes back on its own.  Thanks guys.

As an update, I am still seeing the same error message.  I will take a closer look soon.

Looks like the server has changed.

Good news is a faster layer may have taken its place.  I'll need to do some testing but the current "C" may become "U" and the new layer taking over for "C".    If that makes any sense!

I'm about to head out bikepacking for a few days, so won't be able to do much more for a week or so.

Cheers guys.

Any further updates?  Will the new layer be the same imagery?

Working on this right now, good timing.  Pretty sure I have found a way to restore the old imagery, so C and U will stay the same.

Standby for a beta, hopefully later today.

Please try the beta version's new "U" key:

Thanks!

I'm not sure I understand about the "U" key but...

I downloaded the new beta and installed it.  It appears that the old tiles still remain old imagery and any tiles that I didn't download already are new tiles.  So on some sections of map I have some winter/ no foliage tiles interspersed with fall / foliage tiles.  I was really hoping that usgs would keep the winter tiles online, they are far more useful.

I think of the tilesets in terms of their shortcut keys.  "U" goes to USGS Imagery.  "C" is color.

I didn't notice the change in season -- I was only testing in desert areas (Moab, where I happen to be).  Unfortunately that was the only replacement service I was able to find.

If you want to poke around the base layers and full layers on the 'national map' do let me know if you find something that is winter and of similar quality/resolution.

--Those maps look amazing.  Is it possible to send something like this to a Garmin Edge (or other Garmin units)?
Maybe I'm doing it wrong but any of the topo maps I view within Topofusion seem to be pulling Raster images (I don't see vector options).   This doesn't tend to be too clear when zooming in for hiking / mountain biking in close, tight areas.

Which map type are you seeing that looks good?  Can you post a screenshot?

Generally speaking you are correct that TF works with raster maps not vector.  MyTopo generally has the best detail for hiking/biking.  I would try that.

Thanks

Here is a screenshot.  It looks very similar to MyTopo, except clear once zoomed in.  I'm assuming something like this can't be integrated (or would be difficult).

I believe that map type is in the software now under USTopo.  It isn't quite as clear as it shows in the National Map, but it's the same data.

There is also an alternative USGS topo source available as an 'easter egg' feature in the software.  Drop me an email if you'd like the details (and have a registered copy of the software).

Thanks.

Hello,
Yes, I'm also having problems with USGS Imagery downloading.
It's has not been downloading for the past couple days.
Also some of the downloaded tiles look like C=Colored Aerial
Thanks,
Roger

Thanks for the post -- right now I'm seeing USGS not working, and also Color not downloading.

I will check more closely into it in the next few days.

USGS is going for me now, a few hours later.  Color seems to be a bit too slow to make the timeouts set by TF right now but I bet that will improve.
