Fatal Error: Cannot Read MapIndex.dat
« on: April 10, 2022, 08:22:05 AM »
Hi guys; I have a rare problem that isn't critical to be solved, but I'm interested in trying to fix it.

I use a Mac and virtualize Windows...ONLY for the sake of using Topofusion.  But, now and then it is handy to have a Windows Machine.

I prefer to use Windows XP for Topofusion because it boots very quickly, but I'd been using the Windows 10 VM for convenience (other stuff works too).

So, Both VMs share the same Topofusion folder, including maps. Both copies of Topofusion are 5.72... However, when I open Topofusion in the XP copy, it gives me "Fatal Error: Cannot Read MapIndex.dat".  Opening the same source in Windows 10 works fine.

Any ideas on what may be causing this? I can remove the link on XP and start a new tiles folder... but I've downloaded 50Gb of tiles in the other folder and ideally would use that folder for both VMs.  Thanks!

Hi there,

That is an odd one.  My hunch is that there's some difference in the filesystem or something that exceeded 32bits in XP vs 64 in your W10 machine.

50 Gb is quite a tile cache, strong work!  How big is the mapindex.dat file?

Thanks,

Scott

Scott - Thanks for the reply. I think you're right about the 32bit limitation vs 64bit... Actually, I just looked and my Maps folder has 120Gb... so huge... and the maps.dat is 95.9Mb.  No big deal; I just need to start over downloading tiles if I want to use XP.  I'm kind of going through a computer transition because of this Mac M1 thing.  The versions of Windows I've used historically can't be virtualized without the Intel Chip... so I'm going to be playing around with a Raspberry Pi and ARM version of Windows.  I looked elsewhere for a Topofusion replacement... and of course nothing comes even close for route design.  Kudos for making such awesome software.

Interesting.  Sounds like you are on the case and will get it to work.

Thanks for the nice compliment on the software.  It's going to be 20 years old later this year!
