Pre Downloading Maps
« on: February 23, 2009, 04:35:46 PM »
A little background about the work environment: Frequently when I work with tracks and photos I'm in a campground and do not have internet access. I can download tracks from my GPS and photos from the camera. I can use PhotoFusion to marry the two. But what I see is this "downloading" wallpaper for a map followed by an error message about no connection.

Is there a way to force a download of an area? Including the 2M level maps? I know where I am and where I'm gonna be for a while. I realize that I could pan and scan, etc, but...

I've also seen reference to a "Map Download Tool" on the forum but don't see it anywhere in the app or the TF directory. Is this something that I could use?

tia.... Bob

Yep, the download maps tool is also the "reload maps" tool.  It looks like this:

You can draw a box around an area and pre-download.  Just be careful to not download too big an area at small tilesets -- it could take a while!  :)

How can you "see" what tiles I have downloaded?  Can I select to view only that which is on my hard drive from using the map download tool?  I have used the map download tool a few times so far for Canadian tiles and I would like to keep track of what is in my inventory since I would like to essentially complete a fairly large area that I am likely to visit.

Does selecting and downloading a large square area download all scales of map tiles that intersect the drawn box?  I am not sure I am noticing any improvement in draw times after downloading directly to my drive.

Sorry I missed replying on this one.  Fell through the cracks somehow.

There's a toggle on the toolbar that turns off map downloading.  You can then zoom/pan around to see what you have and don't have.

BTW -- the next version of TF (should be released this week) features highly improved Canadian Topo maps.  You may want to wait for that.  See the beta forum for examples and details.

Yes, the software looks at how many of the tiles requested in a batch are already downloaded, and computes the number 'to go' based on that.

Thanks.
