My Topo going dead?
« on: June 01, 2016, 12:54:14 PM »
I just found out from a friend of mine that within the next year My Topo is going dead.Is there going to be any real topo maps left for topofusion to uses? Terraserver is dead and I don't consider US TOPO to be real topo maps.My Topo is the best thing besides Terraservers maps. Are real topos dead as far as the whole country in a seamless server like this program offers?

Hi,

Thanks for the post.  I wasn't aware of this.  So they got bought by Trimble some years ago, but TF's agreement with them remained intact.  Is it possible they are only shutting down the paper map printing side of myTopo but keeping the tiles?  I think the Trimble phone apps still use them, so unless they have an alternate source, that would seem odd.

Any additional info on this, or that you could learn, would be appreciated.

Unfortunately the USGS servers don't seem to want to serve actual topos, though they certainly could.  I have one alternate topo server up my sleeve that I think TF can use, so there is still hope.  There's also a non-free option that I may be able to explore.

In short, I'll do everything I can do to make sure TF users still have a viable topo map source.

Interesting, thanks for the links.  It appears that Terrain Navigator (what used to be called Maptech Terrain Navigator) itself is continuing on, and that it has a mobile app, still.  So the tile service may continue on, and there's nothing to suggest that myTopo's print based services are shutting down, either.

I'll keep looking, but it regardless if there is any way to get another source going, now is the time.

Thanks again.
