Offline downloads - holes
« on: May 22, 2009, 08:20:59 AM »
Hello, I am a new user (demo, 3.80, W2K, Thinkpad R51)(a few weeks);  I am seeing offline downloads complete, but later panning and zooming of topo and color aerials in the downloaded area result in download requests, with function then blocked if internet is not available.  Tile preferences are set to default, with the addition of the deselection of landsat. I'm not sure the 3D "data source" setting matters, I had it set on "use local if available". 3D pan/zoom seems to work without download requests.

BTW, the topo/photo image function is terrific. Anyone know of a for-pay/public/internet cafe setting where 10MB-100MB speed is available? (no fast corporate connection at the moment).

Hi,

Thanks for the note.  One thing is that in v3.80 the batch download tool does not download color aerials.  There is no way to turn them on/off in preferences and they are not included.  There were some reasons for this initially (server load), but we plan to implement it in the next version.  We wanted to get it into v3.80, but had to push it out with the 3D caching.

Speaking of 3D, it also is not downloaded in a batch download.  That will also go into the next version.

Now, missing topos is a different story.  Can you confirm that you did see missing topos in an area downloaded?  The box you draw stays around (and can be saved as a GPX file by right clicking while still in the load maps tool mode).

I will do some testing and see if I can reproduce it.

Oh, and glad you like the topo/photo stuff.

Thanks.

thanks, I believe you are correct, I recall the download requests during color aerial, can't recall during topo.
Sounds like I should have used the topic "Batch downloads".  Any best guess on when :-) for the color and 3D/DEM batch downloads?  Given the server load issue, and assuming the server isn't going to manage the loads, could the client copies use timeslots or random timers to allow users to define their requests without loading the server too much?

OK, good to hear it was just color aerials.  There are a number of people requesting this, so I will get to it within the next week.  It will likely only be in beta form, though, which means another delay of a week or so (beta only available to registered users, though people have requested demo betas before, and I have granted that too)...

We'll see how the server load goes.  I don't think it will be much of an issue given experience so far.

Thanks.
