Merge Track
« on: December 26, 2010, 03:42:59 PM »
I went on a snowshoe trail today and downloaded the track from my Dakota to TopoFusion. The first .5 miles of the trail is the same route, out and back. So part of my track is the same but the segments kind of zig zag on top of each other. I tried to merge this part of the track using the merge tool. I identified the two segments and the yellow highlighted track was displayed. I right-clicked and did a "Save As" hoping to save the merged track. In the new file I still have the same track that zig zags on top of itself. I'm guessing that this happened because it is actually a single track and the merge tool merges two separate tracks? How do I combine the overlapping zig zag segments into a single merged track?

Yeah, the merge tool is perhaps more appropriately called the "join" tool.  In fact, we just renamed it to that in the next version of the software.  It only joins tracks end to end.

If you want to combine tracks you might try the "Make Network" command in the Analysis menu.  It is really not designed to work on a single track with one one and back, but there's some chance it might do exactly what you want.  Give it a shot, you might find it useful for other stuff down the road.
