Terraserver slow?
« on: January 18, 2010, 07:17:53 PM »
I read a post from August that indicated that sometimes the Terraserver is running slow.  Is there a problem currently?  Am I alone?  I am unable to use Topofusion currently due to maps inability to load consistently.

Once in a while I can get a handful of times to load if I tweak the preferences section to change my dialup vs high speed choices.  It is not a firewall issue.  I have been using for more than a year now and have tested with a disabled firewall.

This is a problem with all maps, topo, landsat, canada, etc.

thoughts?

Hi,

Terraserver is only responsible for topo, B/W aerial and urban.  Landsat, canada, color, etc are all from different servers.

So, something is going on with TF's ability to access the internet.  BTW, Terraserver is serving tiles quickly right now.

What is your setup to access the internet?  Home/office, connection type (DSL, cable, etc).

Cable, fast and confirmed with speedtest.net 31mps dl, 7up.  I am running W7 64bit.

From time to time, it allows me to download a screenfull of tiles, but then when I navigate around, it just goes back to stalled out.  It is as if I am only allowed a limited amount of data download at any given time.

OK.  Do you have 'persistent connections' checked, or not?  Try switching that setting, whatever it's currently on.

Recommend ~10 connections (threads) and a ~30 restart time.  Those are pretty much the defaults.

tried it w/o much success.  I just closed the program and restarted to see if that had an affect and I got the following message...

"Couldn't open Maps.dat for writing.  Switching to read only mode and disabling map download.  If not running Topofusion from cd-rom, try deleting map*dat and starting anew."

Uhh, hmm.  That message is not often seen.  Rather than do what it suggests, try changing your maps directory to some other directory (make a temporary one for it maybe).  Restart TF and see if you have any better luck getting maps.  This way you'll still keep your old maps if that isn't the problem.

Otherwise I recommend restarting your computer -- something (a bum TopoFusion process?) may have a lock on the map file for some reason.

I had actually changed the location to a different directory "C:/maps" because I don't like to use the c:users/name/my topofusion files.

I followed your tip and reset this back to the default location and rebooted.  Essentially the same thing happened. I am able to download a screen full of tiles or so and then it stops.

Strange.  If you wait for a while can you download again?  Or do you have to restart TF in order to get it to download a ~screenfull again?

Do you get an error saying TF is having trouble contacting terraserver (or other servers)...?

no I don't get a message about Terraserver.

It has allowed a download of another screenful after about 15 minutes or so.  I am just going to do a clean uninstall.

Almost seems like throttling from your ISP?  I'm a little stumped.  Clean install is a good thought.
