custom combo maps
« on: March 19, 2009, 08:32:58 AM »
Hi Scott,

Maybe this has been covered before, but I can't find any info:

I'd like to be able to use my own choice of tile sets for the combo maps. Is there a way to do this? Second choice would be to use hotkeys to toggle between the urban tile sets and the TIGER tile sets. (In effect I would get something like Google Maps, but no need for an Internet connection.)

Hey Larry,

You can change which maps go into combo, yes.  Color and Landsat aren't supported, but TIGER and urban are.  So you can do both at the same time.

Also, there are hotkeys for both -- 'U' for urban and 'I' for tiger.  ('T' of course is for topo).

Does that answer you question(s)?

Thanks Scott, yup, that tells me how to do it; works fine. I guess I had never tried any of the other combo options under 'image processing'. I did however need to find the  hotkey for the non-standard combos; normally I just toggle through with the A key. Since the C key brings up color maps, my next try was O (as in cOmbo) which worked.

While I think of it, is the list of hotkeys in the on-line manual up to date? (In case I want to tattoo it on the back of my hand.)    :D

Looks like it's correct, but maybe missing a few things like the Tiger shortcut.

The 'O' key goes to combo no matter which tilesets are used for it -- same goes with the 'a' toggle.

You can also see the shortcuts in the program itself, under the 'Map' menu.

Ok, the color maps are pretty recent and it is correct, cannot combo them with topo. I tried toggling. Though the image processing does allow to adjust the darkness of the color aerials.

I get that color is not supported in combo.

But if I could capture the screen output as a jpeg I could reimport and calibrate to the existing aerial and have a map that I can adjust transparency and over which I can lay a UTM grid.  I did try that by doing print screen, cropping etc and it worked just fine but being able to save to jpeg would save some steps.

That would be of great utility for me where I cannot get capture county GIS maps as JPEGs and at juncitons between county maps where they are on two different sites.

No problem.  Use File->Export View to save the current view as a jpeg.  What you see is what you get at the default "current" setting.

You can also export large images (many computers can do up to 7000x7000 pixels) to get very high detail.  Yes, then you can reimport as a user calibrated map and use the transparency feature.

Viola!  Thanks.  There is a learning curve here but that is GREAT. Don't even need most of the county maps!
