TopoFusion Pro / Re: Topofusion hangs at roads-large.gpx

Hey Guy -- not sure if this will help. I was having the exact same problem. I disabled my virus/firewall (in my case Trend), reinstalled Topofusion, and for whatever reason I haven't had a hitch since then.

If nothing else is working, it might be worth it to shut down your virus check/firewall and see if that is the issue.

Interesting - I shut down Trend Micro, and it loaded right up. I wonder if the anti-virus thinks one of the files is a virus or somehow the firewall is getting involved.

Thanks Scott, where do I find the TF diagnostic file?

My copy of topofusion won't load. It gets to the continent.gpx file in the splash image and hangs. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it. I have deleted the entire contents of the GIS folder.

I don't want to delete all my settings, and particularly my log book, but my GPS is quickly filling up and I need to get the files off. Any idea what is causing the error?

TopoFusion Pro / Re: How Does TopoFusion Compute Distance?

Interesting. I had no idea there were so many variables in the computation of the distance of a track. Thanks for the response.

TopoFusion Pro / How Does TopoFusion Compute Distance?

Something tells me it doesn't. See the attached files. I accidentally stopped the timer on an identical ride I did with my buddy. When you compare the tracks, however, his track is 1/10 of a mile shorter than mine. The problem -- there is a straight line (think hypotenuse) drawn where my GPS timer was stopped. On his track, he has the two legs of the triangle, so in reality his course cannot be shorter, but should be longer.

So I am guessing that the distance data is somehow embedded in the GPS track data? If so, is there a way to make Topofusion recalculate the distance?

(Full disclosure -- I downloaded my buddy's track of Geoladders. Also, on that note I love how you guys implemented climbing analysis in Topofusion that let's one see how the elevation gain is calculated with various algorithms -- I keep telling people that Geoladders likes to underestimate the actual climbing one does.)

(Sorry guys - I cannot post the files -- they are too big)

Thanks Scott. This will be really helpful!

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Network Settings
« on: December 21, 2009, 10:39:20 AM »
Thanks Scott. That makes sense.

For example the network I was trying to make is in a park here in Orange County where there are lots of trails and variations, all near one another. My data is pretty good (points ever second was WAAS) -- I actually got settings that worked to get all the trails -- I cranked the reduction and contraction down to almost nothing.

Anybody willing to share their network settings. I have been looking for the sweet spot with some pretty good results, but I can tell settings for the make network option is an art.

Anybody willing to share reduction and contraction settings that they have found to be particularly effective?

The North East thinks the sun rises on it.  And of course, California thinks the sun sets on it.

LOL.

Looks awesome - It will be especially awesome in the mixed map mode.

Thanks for the hard work.

Thanks for the update. I too am running on a netbook with success (EeePC too).

I haven't -- I will give that a try.

I ride the same trails quite a bit. On one trail in particular, there is a section of the trail I try to ride more or less consistently, and other parts are pretty variable in route and effort.

I would love to be able to select a region and get a snapshot of the data for that region, including climbing profile. That way, I have a way to quantitatively determine how I did over that section compared to past times through that section.

Take for example a networked set of trails. I ride various permutations, but always ride one section the same. It is impossible to compare the ride as a whole to other rides, especially when the routes are different. However, since I always ride the one segment the same direction, I would like to be able to compare how I rode that segment to that segment in other rides.

Thanks again.

Thanks Larry. At the end of the game, I suppose getting a value for your total climb is something of a shell game... Especially the longer you go, the more varied the readings to total elevation get due to error over time. Hmmm, I suppose that I will just stick with GPS elevation (mine calibrates to barometric pressure).

Thanks for the reply Scott:

Using a Garmin eTrex Vista. In this case, I had actually overrun the track memory with subsequent rides -- so I took the track from my SD card. Now that I think about it, I'll bet that was the problem. I wonder if I correctly reset the track data prior to the ride, but still weird why it wouldn't show up on the map. hmmm.

I just double checked the file -- turns out it did show up on the map. I just didn't pay close enough attention.

Thanks again.

Cheers,

TopoFusion Pro / Combo Maps

Scott:

New version is great, and discovered that a little editing for each GPS file is in order to get rid of the points as it calculates the elevation in the elevation profile.

Three questions:
1. What have people found to be the most accurate measurement of elevation. I like DEM because it goes straight from the map data, but is it really the most accurate? If so, what settings provide the most reliable results with respect to total elevation gain?

2. With one track, I just noticed my stopped time was excessive. I rode two hours, with a about 15 minutes of stopped time for a flat. But the track showed 3 1/2 stopped hours. So I went into the track properties to look at the raw data points... I discovered that it actually showed three tracks, with the first two were at my house (listed as tracks 1, 2, and 3). But the points corresponding to my house didn't show up on the map, only track 3, which was the moving track did? Any ideas what is going on because it would a lot easier to delete the spurrious points from the map than looking at raw data. (BTW, I love that it is so easy to see the data points and edit them when necessary)

3. (MAIN QUESTION) What is the reason that you cannot select Color Aerial or Landsat in the combo maps. I would really like to have an option to select Color Aerial and Topo, with the topo set at 20% (that way you can see the contours if you focus, but you aren't limited).

If possible, may I request this as a feature request?

Thanks.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Garmin eTrex Database Error
« on: February 26, 2009, 03:51:43 PM »
Thanks. That is what I though as far as the points go.

That is a good point with respect to the saved track. That is what I have been doing. It just is a little easier I find to activate a route than sift through tracks to get them to show. Don't know why.

I got the track off Geoladders. I had the same issue with a prior track I saved to. Maybe the issue has something to do with Geoladders .gpx tracks?

TopoFusion Pro / Garmin eTrex Database Error
« on: February 26, 2009, 12:18:27 PM »
I am trying to upload a track as a route to my eTrex Vista Hcx. I reduce the points to 100 (actually the number of points shows 196 when I am done with the reduction in the log window). Anyhow, when I go to upload as a route, Topofusion says Transfer Complete, but my eTrex beeps and reads "Database Error."

I cleared my track memory and route memory to ensure this wasn't the problem. Could it have something to do with the fact that my coordinate system is set to UTM on my unit (set the same with Topofusion).

Anybody else had this issue?

(The unreduced track is attached)
