TopoFusion Pro / Map disappears after Photofusion Analysis
« on: August 27, 2013, 07:42:11 PM »
I load my tracks and get a topo map. Looks great.

I then apply PhotoFusion and the photos are added perfectly but the map details disappear.

It has been a long time since I have used PF and I'm sure I once knew how to do this. And I searched for an answer. Help me out here.

Thanks... Bob

Nope, did not edit anything manually. But... What was in there was D:\ and so if the path composer had a \ in front of it, voila, the concatenation is double-slashed.

I have only seen this in one other application.

If I remember what I did to get there I'll let you know.

At one point I did something, and I can't remember what, that "moved" my data to D:
Somehow the path ended up being D:\\ instead of D:\

The path to "My TopoFusion Files" ended up with that extra \. Once I changed the path to "D:\My TopoFusion Files" the problem went away.

Now, all I have to do is figure out where this is set before it propagates. I already have the problem in one other application. (Any help is welcome.)

My apologies for any wheelspinning that I have caused you.

Is it possible that I need to RUN it as admin? Remember, win 7 needs elevation (pun not intended) for some chores.

Never mind, just tried this. Same results.

Every time I restart it asks for the code.

This is a new box, less than a month old. Since it was win 7 64bit I did not even try to install the old TF that I had.

One thing I can try is to download the install again and do a binary compare against the one that I've been using.

Failing that, what would you like for me to do next?

The logo splash is still up when I minimize TF.

Unfortunately, the same results.

The (x86) is a standard directory in win7. I could try installing it elsewhere. The install process defaulted to x86, I did not make that choice.

I just installed 4.05 on a Windows 7 64 bit machine. Clean install TF never on this machine before.

When starting TF I get a dialog box with this error after filling in the Registration Info:
Module: frmMain

Error Number: 76
Description: Path not found

If I exit the program and restart TF I get the registration box again and the error again.

fwiw, I just did an upload to my Nuvi 350 and got "Transfer Completed" but do not see the waypoints that I uploaded. Admittedly, they were dupes of POIs that were already there but I had changed the symbols and that did not show up.

Under "GPS Config" I see
  • Garmin USB
  • USB (gray)
  • 9600 (gray)

Don't know if this helps... Bob

TopoFusion Pro / Re: User Maps and Calibration
« on: November 07, 2009, 06:49:57 AM »
OK. I think I'm beginning to get how this works. Tell me if I have it right:
  • The "map" aka jpg lives anywhere I like on hard drive.
  • The info that pegs or locates the map is in TopoFusion.ini
  • The UserImagex0p0 and UserImagey0p0, etc, are pixel relative to someplace on the image and UserLat0p0/
UserLon0p0 are the lat/lon coordinates of that pixel point.

Makes sense so far. To upload, I assume that I use GPS/GPS Transfer but when I open that I only see options to do tracks or waypoints. Is there another option for maps? Will this work for a Garmin Nuvi 350?

The other thing that is puzzling me is how and where this all gets tied together for the GPS unit. Right now I have three discrete data points that are only tied together in the ini. My map, waypoints and ini data. I understand how that works for TF but don't see how it transfers. Smoke and mirrors maybe?  ;D

TopoFusion Pro / User Maps and Calibration
« on: November 06, 2009, 08:59:28 AM »
I'm confused. I guess I thought that I could take a map, like a .jpg, and peg it ("calibrate") to note its position and then use it like other maps. I did read the help on this and did search for topics but I'm still a bit confused.

I have a .jpg map of an area that is not covered by the Garmin mapset. I have some waypoints that were taken in that area. What I would like to do is marry the two and end up with a map and embedded waypoints. Ideally, I'd like to be able to upload that final product into my Garmin and "see" it there. Is this possible?

While I think I know more about this stuff than the average bozo, certainly more than my wife, I confess that there is still a bunch that I don't understand. But I'm trying.

TopoFusion Pro / Elevation Smoothing
« on: May 10, 2009, 07:42:32 PM »
I have poked around in the archives and searched but found nothing that directly addresses this for me. This thread talks about smoothing but is not exactly helpful to me:
http://www.topofusion.com/forum/index.php?topic=3177.0
Perhaps I am missing something?

Please consider this vertical profile:
http://ebizmax.com/Boating/MiddleMiddleTygart/profileFusionGarmin.png
exported from TopoFusion.

This is a river track and we are going downstream. I have a Garmin 60csx which has the barometric altimeter. The unit lives inside a drybag in my boat, this should dampen any barometric spikes. Although I have been known to go upstream I can assure you that I did not do so on this trip, at most I would have been at the same elevation for a few minutes like in an eddy. I have no idea why the Garmin data jumps up and down (btw, you can see the other pages and download the raw gdb and gpx files here:
http://ebizmax.com/Boating/MiddleMiddleTygart/Index.html)

I would like to find some sort of very simple smoothing tool that assumes one direction of vertical travel. For example, on this track if some number of vertical observations are moving downward and suddenly one is up throw it out and substitute some midpoint between adjacent observations. I am very interested in the %grade but expressed as feet per mile (standard boater talk).

I have a similar problem when biking. I'll clearly be going steadily uphill, on a rail-trail for example, but the elevation data will jump up and down. More frequent logging just exacerbates the problem.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I would not worry too much about confusing the first time user with this. I'm not much more than a first timer myself. I suggest that you label the proposed field with something like, "What time was the first picture taken?"

TF is not an intuitive interface, I'm not sure that it can be given how new all of this really is. If you put yourself in the position of someone who only rides bikes, takes pix, and knows a little bit about GPS then ask yourself how many of the fields in this dialog box are self explanatory. For example, I have been using a "GMT Offset" of "-5:00:00" instead of time zone. That's because I only recently figured out that the offset field is for the picture time error.  I had been thinking that you could EITHER enter the time zone or offset.

EXIF headers may or may not mean anything to a first timer. I only understood what they were this morning becauseuntil today I didn't need to know.

Please understand that I am not arguing with you, just presenting a point of view and trying to be helpful. I have found that it helps to think in terms of what the user is trying to DO, not what the field IS. Or, put another way, think Benefits not Features.

Thanks... Bob

TopoFusion Pro / PhotoFusion and Photo Timestamps (aka lazy friends)
« on: April 08, 2009, 06:38:29 AM »
I am faced with the prospect of using photos from friends where the timestamp may be as much as two years or more off. Having read the archived posts on this topic my understanding is that the only way to fix this is with the GMT offset and calculating the number of hours/minutes involved. Is this true? Got any suggestions for doing it besides a calculator or the exif editor?

Seems to me like a better way might be for PF to allow the input of the correct time for the first photo in the series and the actual timestamp on that photo. PF could then calculate the difference??? (I'm lazy too.)

Feature Requests / Re: color coded speed and %grade Track Shading
« on: April 06, 2009, 05:26:56 PM »
First of all, let me say that I am using TF for paddling in this case and not for biking. Here's a reference page of a recent river run:
http://ebizmax.com/Boating/HollyRiver/Photos/index.html

I would like to do some things with track shading that may already exist but I can't find them.

First, I would like to be able to specify speed granularity. On a bike one can manage anything from 5mph or less to 30mph or more. On a whitewater river it's generally much less but it does vary. For example, one might really boogie down a rapid for a quarter mile or more. Or, one might sit in an eddy and watch others boogie. Shading a track image to show different speeds at 1mph increments might be very interesting and informative.

Second, I would like to be able to do the same thing with gradient. Some sections of a river may approach 100 feet per mile while others may be nearly flat or anything in between. Shading a track image to show different feet per mile at, say,  5fpm increments might be very interesting and informative.

Finally, the shading controls seem to be these:
1. Shading can be toggled on and off with the button on the toolbar.
2. Shading selection can be specified at Options/ColorShading/ShadeTracksBy {Elevation|Speed|...}
3. Shading control seems to apply to the open instance of the application rather than apply to each track. Seems like a Context (right-click) control for track shading would be more appropriate.

Again, I realize that I am probably operating beyond the design limits of the app but it never hurts to ask, right?

Thanks... Bob

Beta Testing / PhotoFusion-type outputs with no photos
« on: March 26, 2009, 07:27:31 AM »
As I've said before PF has the potential to go way beyond photos. Many times I go for a ride and take no pictures, but I want to share the information I've gleaned with others. I do this through web pages. Consider this one:
http://ebizmax.com/Biking/RockCreekRollerCoaster/Photos/index.html
For comparison, here is the TF std output. Note that the scale box is not included and that even though the aerial map was selected the topo was output as the std map.
http://ebizmax.com/Biking/RockCreekRollerCoaster/PF_Testing/index.html

The output here was from PF and then edited. The topo map of this area is really lousy so I used the aerial, much better anyway, and included the scale box (I did this last night and this morning I can't remember for a while how I got the scale box in the first place, but that's another problem). Mostly, I deleted a lot of stuff.

The main image I had to do a screen print, edit and save, export does not include the scale box. btw, I would like to have a bolder, more defined track in this image but could not figure out a way to do it.

I continue to believe that there is a LOT you can do with the TF code with a little massaging. This is the biker and boater equivalent of Birthday Party Photo Album publishing and more.

Let me know when I can test something.

Beta Testing / PhotoFusion HTML output format
« on: March 26, 2009, 07:03:31 AM »
I've been using Photofusion/Topofusion again and have some more thoughts on how to make it more [broadly] useful. I'll post a couple of times to keep the posts shorter and single topic.

I've suggested suppression of certain outputs and rejiggering of others. I've come up with two ways to make this simpler and more useful.

1. Output to a template. A template with certain defined areas such as Dreamweaver regions. This would produce a ready to use page with only the desired elements. Blogger and other tools use this approach.

2. Output snippets of HTML. This would be much simpler than the current output with toggle pages, rollovers, and thumbnails, etc. The user could then place the snippets in pages of her own design. You could even carry this so far as to include Dreamweaver region tags in a complete page:
<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="Brief Description" -->
<!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
This would allow a user to simply apply a DW template to the page.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Export View and Generate HTML
« on: March 10, 2009, 12:40:31 PM »
Yeah, not sure if I should disable that message or not.  It's still useful if someone is trying to do an export with images.
I don't think you should disable it. Probably could be clearer, just a new paragraph for the "HTML page will be generated." would do it.
Quote
As for the red areas disappearing, is it just changing from topo 4m to (looks like) topo 8m or 16m?  That's very strange since the PF export should just be exactly 'what you see is what you get.'  The tileset should not change.
You called it, 4m has the shading, 8m does not.
Quote
Try zooming in a bit (perhaps making your TF window bigger too) to get the better map back.
Zooming fixed it.
Quote
You could also change the 'tileset zoom' in Options->Preferences->Tilesets.  Set it to shrink smaller tiles.
I changed this but am not clear by how much, there is no scale. Could probably use more info here, I read the help but am still fuzzy.

Also, virtually all the tilesets are checked but I suspect I only need a few. If I preload without unchecking most of them I get some ridiculous count in the thousands. What are all these different sets good for, anyway? (That's a question, not a complaint.)

Do the preferences apply to ALL maps? Or, are they peculiar to a particular file? I'm assuming the former which begs the question: what if you want to use color aerial for one and b/w aerial for another?

Thanks for the help... Bob

I successfully used PhotoFusion to generate HTML with no photos. The process feedback was a little grumpy about it:

...but the page was created:
http://ebizmax.com/Biking/RockCreekLoop/index.html

One problem I did note that has nothing to do with PF is that the map background changed: the reddish color outside of the park area has morphed into black and white. Here's the new, "improved" topo image:

Nothing seems to bring back the old image. Sigh.

A little background about the work environment: Frequently when I work with tracks and photos I'm in a campground and do not have internet access. I can download tracks from my GPS and photos from the camera. I can use PhotoFusion to marry the two. But what I see is this "downloading" wallpaper for a map followed by an error message about no connection.

Is there a way to force a download of an area? Including the 2M level maps? I know where I am and where I'm gonna be for a while. I realize that I could pan and scan, etc, but...

I've also seen reference to a "Map Download Tool" on the forum but don't see it anywhere in the app or the TF directory. Is this something that I could use?

I hope this is the right place to put this.

A few suggestions for PhotoFusion. All of these apply to the PhotoFusion dialog box:
  • Remember the setting for "Add URL prefix..."
  • Do NOT include the http prefix in the "Add URL prefix..." setting above
  • Automatically propagate the setting from .jpg path to the destination path.
  • Show the path like the Track File for both the .jpg path and the destination path boxes. This is a common problem in lots of apps: if the path is in MyDocs then nothing meaningful appears in the window.

Great application.

This is an amazing feature, really slick.

Sometimes, about half, my tracks are for river paddling, half of that for flatwater. Even tho my Garmin 60csx generates elevations it's mostly bogus. It would be really great to be able to suppress the generation of the three table rows that relate to vertical: Total Climbing, Total Descending, and the bmp graphic.

This page is a good example of what I mean, there being no discernable gradient, maybe 5 feet per mile?
http://ebizmax.com/2009Florida/WekivaRiver/Photos/index.html

I know that I can edit the rows out and I do. But if I have to do it over, yes, I make boo boos, then I have to remember to re-edit the page.

When I saw that the posts were censored, sorry, moderated, I had some reservations. You've gone way beyond erasing my skepticism. I love the product and look fwd to learning more about it.

Finally, I worked for a commercial software house for ten years as developer, development manager including support, and sundry QA and marketing and sales jobs. I understand how difficult product support can be. You are doing a great job.
