MyTopo does not work either. It is clearly the new map sets creating the problem. I can't find any firewall settings that would be interfering so far. My desktop and laptop are pretty much configured the same, but the laptop is not allowing the downloads. Desktop is downloading fine. What do you mean by a new map directory?

Seeing that someone else is haveing a similar problem, there is probably some quirk out there that is causiig the problem. Oh, I might also note that my desktop is Win 7 and my laptop is XP.

I have been having problems downloading openstreet Map on my laptop. It works fine on my desktop - same internet connection. Can't quite figure this out. Other things still download on the laptop such as Topo and Landsat. Using 4.2, but tried rolling back to 2.1 just to see if that fixed it. Any others having this problem?

Krein,

I like the addition of the new map sets. Have not been to Canada in a while, but i hope to get up there to do some trekking. Nice to know Topofusion will support it when that day comes.

The tiger maps are useful, but you are right, they don't line up very well. In the Albuquerque NM area they are almost 500m off. I'm sending a screenshot to the support@topofusion.com e-mail address.

I'd still like to see images or maps of the rest of the world (I'm living in S. Asia) but I guess we need to wait until somebody creates a map server for this part of the world.

Unfortunately, most photo editing programs do not recognize the
geotags and some even obliterate the geotags.

I have not had that experience. My geotagged photos work fine with Lightroom, Photoshop, Thumbs Plus and a few others.

Krein,

I have another suggestion along this line -- how about adding the ability to read the geocoordinates off of a .jpg files that has been already been tagged by another program (such as robogeo). Additionally, I think we are very close to seeing cameras that automatically tag the coordinates to a photo(there is an accessory for the canon 40d that might do this, and I think there are a couple of cameras with internal gps or ability to connect to a gps) so the need for software to do it may diminish, but the need to read that data will increase. This would be a good way to get comfortable with geocoordinates embedded in the exif files and should be fairly easy to code.

There is a program called RoboGEO that will add the coordinates to the exif header and will even stamp it on the photo itself. Interfaces with Google Earth, but I still like topofusion better. Would be nice if Topofusion included this feature. I use both programs in tandem.

Beta Testing / Insert/Delete Bug with translated GPX files
« on: February 01, 2007, 09:15:35 AM »
I dont know if this is related or not, but when creating some waypoints in a GPX file I noticed that there was a slight change occasionally to the coordinates. Specifically, I was creating guide points for the corners of imported maps. Because the corners of the maps lie on even longitude and latitude lines for 1:250,000 maps this was easy, and it made the error obvious. Upon manually entering a waypoint, I entered:

30° 0' 0" N
79° 30' 0" E

After I came back to the point, it read:

30° 0' 0.00" N
79° 30' 0.01" E

I figured this was a roundoff error of some sort (although I would not have expected it with such round numbers) but it was not a big deal for what I was doing due to the scale I was working at. However, may be an issue worth looking into.

I have not yet experienced a crash when dealing with the user maps. I have about 12 1:250,000 maps loaded at 4-5 meg each. Only problem I experience is that the program will "hang" if I select too many of them at once, but if I leave it alon for a while, it will eventually load all of them and work (albeit sluggish). If I try to do something else with the program while it is still loading the maps, then it does crash.

Hope Krein can fix your issue soon - it is a great addition to the program.

I have been experimenting with the user maps, and frankly, this is a great feature. Some things I have noticed in the process (using 2.91 and 3.0 beta):

- I have noticed that when you manually edit a waypoint's coordinates, you have to close the properties box and re-open it before the coordinates show the update. It might be helpful if the coordinates changed as soon as the edit box is closed. (I wasted some time initially thinking the program was not taking my changes since I did not see the update immediately).

- When loading a new user map, the program does not automatically default to the map you are trying to load. It takes the first map in the list if the dialog was just opened or the last one you were working on if the dialog had not been cloed. This is workable, but I have probably had to fix the first map a dozen times as I was rushing through installing a bunch of maps.

- Lastly, a fourth calibration point would be helpful in some instances. I have been using images of 1:250,000 maps downloaded from the University of Texas Library for parts of India, and I realized that the maps are not quite square. (at first I thought this was just due to the curvature of the earth and the fact that the longitude lines converge at the pole, but this seems to be exagerated by the way the maps were scanned). This problem also occurs when I try to photograph a map and don't quite get it centered. A fourth point would enable the map to be skewed to correct for this.

Again, not really errors, but things that would make the program cleaner and more functional.

The terrain grows out and forms the 3d image. The blacking out occurs when I try to rotate or move the image. Sometimes it blacks out completely, sometimes it is progressive - more blacks out each time I move it. Yes, I had this problem with other betas. It has actually gotten better. The problem also occured infrequently with the pre-direct x 9 version of topofusion, but never like with these betas.

I loaded Directx 9 and then topofusion. Seems to work well with two exceptions.

- Occasionally, when in 3D mode the 3D model will go black and will not return. I can not recreate any specific cause of this, it just happens every now and then.

- The grid lines do not work with the landsat images. Also, my previously saved images did not work (landsat) and had to be re-loaded. I suspect that I now have them twice in the image file.

Looking forward to seeing new capabilities.

Using Dell Dimension Pentium 4 with Windows XP Pro SP2. I'll try on my laptop in a day or two.

I like the new GIS layers capability. Add the option to have an icon for the cities and the ability to change the font for the labels. Also, ability to create custom gis layers would be nice. I was just searching the internet and the Garmin Web site to see if others had reported the same tracklog problem I mentioned above. In the process I happened upon the page for the next beta of the gpsmap 60csx firmware (2.62), One of the new features they are reporting is the ability to save active logs to a file on the micro-sd card. It's not 100,000 points, but it is a HUGE step in the right direction. I am leery of downloading the beta, so I'll probably just wait for the final version with baited breath.

Brian

Thought I might add here that I upgraded to the 60csx firmware 2.71 beta which has the save tracklog to card feature. It appears that the tracklog can be bigger than the 10,000 limit for the internal memory. In fact some users are reporting the log can be a big as the sd card.

They also fixed the tracklog problem mentioned above. The 60csx seems to be the unit to get (or any of its cousins - 60cx, 76csx, 76 cx)

I always take a picture of my GPS (with the screen showing current time) either beofre or after a trip. That way you can compare the exif time with GPS time and have a record of your offset for that day since the camera clock will drift a bit. and I am sure if you are like me, you forget to set the camera clock to the GPS every time you go out.

Good point on the X series. All are not created equal.

I had an interesting thing happen to my 60csx this week (I'm living in S. Asia) I was driving around and had the 60csx tracking my travel. I stopped at an ancient walled city and spent an hour or so hiking around the wall of the city. Anyway, once I got back into the car and was driving again my gps started dropping trackpoints every second. Needless to say I used up the rest of the track log in about 10 minutes. Has anyone else had this happen? The problem seemed to start once I got back in the car and started driving again.

The 205 and 305 use the same high sensitivity receivers as the new Garmin x series. I am AMAZED at the sensitivity. In my opinion any GPS without this new technology is obsolete. In my own tests with my GPSMAP 60CSx I have noted that the accuracy appears to stay at around 1-2 meters (without WAAS), regardless of what the GPS actually says it is.

Well, I may have found the problem. I downloaded the 3' DEM files from the USGS seamless site and when I loaded it into 3DEM guess what - the data is full of "holes" corresponding to what should be the higher elevations of everest. The resulting 3d image is even stranger than using the auto-dem download. I also loaded some of the 1 km elevaton data which did not have the "holes" and everest looked great, although not as detailed.

I would be interested to know why the higher elevation data is not there in the DEM data.

Mine is over 250 meg. I have 4 continents worth of maps/landsat in it. Since it stores the tiles from everywhere you have been, that is understandable. I think if you lost it you would have to re-download when you bring up the various maps. Your GPX files are separate, so you would not loose the actual data you ave collected in the form of GPS tracks. I don't backup my program files directory, which is where the maps1.dat resides, (mine is actually maps0.dat - not sure why), since this information is recoverable off the internet. My GPX files are kept in a directory I do back up.

I was trying to create a 3-D plot of a flight I took around Everest recently and discovered that there seems to be a problem with the way Topofusion deals with higher elevations in 3D mode. Basically it does not seem to render accurately above 25,000 feet. I first noticed this with Everest, then checked it with several other Himalayan peaks. Same result. To be sure it wasn't a region problem with the data I also checked it on the Andes and had the same result. I checked Mt. Mckinley, and there does not appear to be elevation data for there as it produced a flat 3-D image. I also tried Kilimanjaro and it resulted in a good rendering (it is just over 20,000 feet which leads me to the 25,000 or above conclusion).

BTW - topofusion makes some great 3-D images of the Himalyas with elevation data and landsat photos.

One small suggestion for photofusion would be a way to de-link the photo directory from the track. Right now the only way to do that is to point to a directory with no pictures in it. Photofusion searches for the photos evey time it loads and if the directory has a lot, it can delay the program. Perhaps add a way to clear the photo directory or add a check box to temporarily de-select it.

Just a question, have you noticed wheter or not an error on one set of tiles is seen across all of the different tile setd for a given area. I have not quire been able to determine this, but All of the tile sets for the Albuquerque NM area seem to be spot on.

I am assuming the nudging tool adjusts the tile set, not the elevation data. Where I am located (Albuquerque, NM) I am finding that the map tile sets are spot on accurate, but the 3-D is just a little bit off. If I try to nudge the tile set, it just thrown the track off of the map. It is most noticable at 2 and 4 M topo. I estimate that the elevation data is about 25 meters south of the Map and GPS Data. How is the best way to check and verify what the offset is and is there a way you can fix it? you mention contributing corrections, how is that done? What's the best way to verify corrections?

Beta Testing / Version 2.81 - Garmin X series and other fixes
« on: March 10, 2006, 01:50:14 AM »
I received my Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx today, and let me say it is th emost amazing GPS I have ever used. I can even get signals inside my house, which is cement construction (I am living overseas right now). I am truly amazed at the power of this unit.

Ran a few tests.

Filled the GPS track log completely up with tracks, then downloaded to topofusion. This is my first USB GPS and I like the speed. No problems whatsoever.

Downloaded several waypoints. This worked fine too. I like the way the GPSMAP can now handle longer waypoint names and lower case. Everything transferred exactly over to Topofusion.

Next I tried to upload two tracks from Topofusion to the active log of the GPS. Seemed to work fine except that the separate tracks were all merged together. This also happened when I tried to upload only one track. It downloaded back into Topofusion OK (still was all merged together though). I might point out that the timestamps were unchanged. You apparently fixed that part of the upload. To make sure it wasn't an issue with the GPS I tried the same procedure with Mapsource and did not encounter the merging of tracks issue. When I took the uploaded data from mapsource and downloaded it into Topofusion, it came out fine. This is probably not something a lot of people woud do on a frequent basis, but it may be an issue for some. I sometimes use this technique to bring two tracks together in one gpx file.

I don't use the live tracking, but I tried it and could not get Topofusion to communicate wit the GPS for that. Since I have never done it before, I may have been doing something wrong.

Hope this helps.

Bob had some good points. One thing that might help when you have a cluster of photos would be to open a window that offers a selection of files to choose from. Probably kind of complicated to have topofusion generate html that does this, but it is possible. If the ability to click an icon for the picture right in topofusion is added, it would be relatively straightforward to have a separate dialogue open up.

Thanks for the response. To clarify, it was the active log I was trying to upload and download. I found out the saved tracks lose their time stamps the hard way. Not sure why Garmin did this, but oh well.

One additional piece of info on this... I have done this before using garmin's software and have not had the date change problem. Also, I might add that when I tried this procedure with a Garmin GPS V it lost the time data completely (when using mapsource). The GPS V has an older version of Garmin software though, and less track memory so that may have something to do with it.

I'll look forward to the improvements to topofusion with much anticipation.

I just realized when uploading a track from Topofusion 2.70 to my Garmin E-trex Vista and then back down to Topofusion, the date stamp on the tracks had an extra 20 years added (eg. tracks form 2006 now had a 2026 date). I discovered this while trying to figure out why some of the tracks would not link to photos in photofusion. Not sure if the problem is in the GPS or in topofusion.

Two things I would like to see in a future release of topofusion -

1.  Ability to click on photofusion icons and see the associated photo (or at least a thumbnail).

2.  Ability to insert gps exif data to photofusion photos and th ability to watermark photos with GPS and time data.

Thanks

First, let me say that this is a phenominal program. I just paid the $40 after trying the trial version for a couple of days. It is worth every cent.

I have noticed that when using 3d mode, the elevation data seems to be 100-200 meters west of the maps and gps tracks I have uploaded. I am working mainly around the Albuquerque NM area. BTW - the imagery and topo maps are dead-on perfect for this area when I upload GPS data. I took a GPS reading next to a big tree that was easily found on the aerial photography, and the waypoint matched exactly with the GPS reading about a 5 m error.
