Archived - Feedback and Comments / Installing v.2.5
« on: February 21, 2005, 07:03:30 PM »
Hey guys,

Sorry for the confusion.  We haven't yet sent out the email out to everyone on the list to let them know there is a new version out.  That email has the instructions to remind everyone that they can't download the demo since it's a completely different program.  You need to go to the (unadvertised) full version download page.

I admit it's a little confusing and a bit of a different style than other shareware programs.  But it makes the program more secure to cracking.

Thanks.

Archived Support / Logbook problem?
« on: February 16, 2005, 06:50:37 PM »
Yes, there is -- download the beta version!

The icon will say "more" when there is more than one exercise in a day.  Clicking on the day again will cycle through them, or there's a "next" button as well.

Give it a try.

Beta is at:

Archived Support / no icons?
« on: February 16, 2005, 12:00:00 PM »
Yep, we don't have pictures for the icons, though we load/save files correctly and upload/download them from GPS's.

I want to see arrows for showing course direction, and the method that makes the most sense is to do it through waypoint symbols, so it's on the todo list.

Archived Support / GPSmap 60C waypoints won't download
« on: February 16, 2005, 11:57:37 AM »
Yes, it definitely helped.  Thanks for reporting the problem so specifically.

Please give version 2.19 a try, now on the beta page:

http://www.topofusion.com/beta.php

I'm not sure if I have nailed the tracklog downloading inconsistency, but I am fairly sure I fixed the waypoint problem you're having.  I was able to duplicate it on my 60CS.  It would always get an error on a certain waypoint.

The track downloading, unfortunately, is very hard to test since it almost always works for me.

Hey guys,

I have a possible fix for this USB bug.  Please give version 2.19 a try and let me know if there is any change in behavior.

Thanks.

That's strange since it works on my 60CS and (as far as I know) always has.

The only conclusion I can come to is that there is something inconsistent with our USB code.  It works for some people on some things and not for others.  I'm trying to work out what the problem is this week.

Thanks for the bug report.

No worries.

You can also hit the "C" key to switch to color aerials (if they are available).

"L" goes to landsat, "B" to b/w aerial

Yeah, I saw that & would love to have that info in TF.  I can take a look at it.

You can do text using waypoints (and you can turn the dot off too), but a preset symbol for direction arrow is a good idea.  The fact that you can't tell which direction a loop is traveling has always bothered me and I really want to come up with a solution to it.

Thanks for getting back on this one.  I wonder why norton would stop it from running.  It does try to access the internet, but not until it's loaded up, and it should just not allow the http access.

I can't imagine why an anti-virus software would not allow it to run.

Beta Testing / 2.17 Beta Crashes
« on: February 12, 2005, 04:51:52 PM »
Hi,

Can either of you download the current beta version (still 2.18, but it has more debug information), then give it a try?

It might behave a bit differently now (not crashing, just not working), but I've added even more debug info to further track down the problem.

If you can post or email (smorris@topofusion.com) the resulting log file I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

Hi,

Can you download the current beta version (still 2.18, but it has more debug information), then give it a try?

When it fails, will you email the resulting TopoFusion.log file to smorris@topofusion.com  ?

Thanks.

Archived Support / Garmin altitude download
« on: February 11, 2005, 09:23:00 PM »
No problem, I'll see if I can delete them.

The elevation that is stored with the tracks is from the barometer because generally it is better.  There's no way to get the GPS elevation because I believe it is not even stored on the unit.

At least this is the case with all the barometer enabled units I've used (Vista, 60CS).

Yep, this is item number one on the todo list -- export of HUGE images.

Thanks for the request.

In the meantime, Brad Culberson has written a utility that downloads tracks from the 301 to GPX files (readble by TopoFusion):

He reverse engineered it in 'an hour', but without a unit to test it will not be so easy.

Beta Testing / Color Aerials Los Angeles
« on: February 03, 2005, 09:21:31 PM »
I don't think there ever have been color (urban) aerials for LA.  If there were, they would have been stored on your hard drive, so they'd show up.  What comes up now, white fuzz? Are you thinking of the LandSat tiles?  If so, those are still there in the drop down.

All the tilesets show up in the drop down box regardless of whether they are enabled or not.  But selecting them will go to either the next higher or next lower enabled tileset.  If all are disabled you'll still get one of them (like AIR 1M) for example.

Yep, we're getting many requests from 301 owners to fix this bug.  I can't imagine why Garmin wouldn't have made the heart rate addition backwards compatible, but they haven't shown solid design of their serial protocol in the past either.

We do plan on supporting the 301, yes.  I will likely need a tester or two to make sure it is working.  Thanks for the request.

Archived Support / Problem dloading tracks in v2.1
« on: February 01, 2005, 05:27:32 PM »
OK, my thought is that it might be the auto adding of tracks to the new logbook.   Have you used the logbook at all?

Have you tried unchecking the "add tracks(s) to logbook" checkbox in 2.18?  I believe that that checkbox actually didn't work in 2.1 -- it always added downloaded tracks anyway.  So it's worth another try in 2.18.

If that does it look for the log file "TFlog.csv" and send it to me if you can, or at least delete it to see if you can get it to work even with the checkbox turned on.

« on: February 01, 2005, 05:11:22 PM »
OK, thanks for trying it.  I can think about what has changed since 2.01 when it was working for you.

Is there anything out of the ordinary about the tracks currently on the unit?  Full tracklog, bogus points, many saved tracks, etc?

If you have a GPX file from version 2.01 that successfully downloaded that would be very helpful for debugging.

Thanks.

Archived Support / Acreage???
« on: February 01, 2005, 01:35:59 PM »
Yes, it should work on any track -- but not on a serious of waypoints (they need to be connected).

If you have an older version of topofusion (pre 2.0 maybe) then you won't have the option.

What options do you have when you right click?

973
Archived Support / Acreage???
« on: February 01, 2005, 01:24:01 PM »
Sorry, I mean that you need to right click on a track in the map window -- not on the file in the active file list.  And you should be in pan mode (hand cursor).

Area is definied per track, not per file, that's why it is in that drop down.

A problem with the interface right now is that some functions (like this one) are hidden in the right click menus.  I guess it is not obvious that you can right click on tracks in the map window since some people seem to be missing it.

Archived Support / GPS Support
« on: February 01, 2005, 01:21:03 PM »
Nope, not unless there is a program out there to convert them to GPX format.

We own an iFinder, but have never added support for it in TopoFusion since it doesn't transfer using a serial port.  The appeal initially was the 10,000 point tracklog, but garmin soon followed suit.

Archived Support / Scaled down version available?
« on: February 01, 2005, 08:38:39 AM »
We have considered a scaled down version, but only the other way around -- a basic, terraserver and simple GPS function version that would NOT have the network code in it.

That is a good thought though -- a version that doesn't have terraserver capability but just some of the advanced gps data management stuff.  I'll give it some thought.

Supposedly to have a good business you need a 'product line.'  We already know that we're pretty terrible businessmen, and we're happy with how everything is going, but a product line good idea, I guess.

If you right click on a track (doesn't need to be completely closed, it just won't work well if its really open) and select "compute area" a dialog box comes up with the figure in square miles and acres.

Was this your question, or do you think the number is not correct?

Ok, thanks for the quick response.

Give v2.18 (up now) a try.  Try getting a 3d model from the nasa server, then when it crashes if you could email the file 'TopoFusion.log' to smorris@topofusion.com I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

Beta Testing / 2.17 Beta Crashes
« on: January 31, 2005, 03:02:36 PM »
Wait, can you check the file date on your Corona.dll ?  Are you sure you overwrote it with the new one in the beta zip file?

The corona.dll in your program files\topofusion directory should be dated 1/14/2005.

This would explain the error perfectly!  I've fixed it to output a meaningful message rather than crapping out as it does in 2.17.

I've got a debug version for you to test unless (I hope) the problem was just the wrong version of corona.dll.

Let me know if this still crashes or not.  Thanks.

Archived Support / Why no routes ???
« on: January 31, 2005, 02:09:41 PM »
Sorry, no options for downloading routes for either garmin or magellan.  I've never found a use for it personally, but we can consider adding the functionality.  I make my routes on the computer and then upload.  I find linking waypoints on units themselves too cumbersome.

As for line width -- I agree completely.  It needs to be in there, as selectable for each track, or each file as a whole.  I often hack the source code to do line width for various mapping projects, figures, etc.  An option would be nice.

Thanks for the bug report.  There is one other user who is having the same problem.

What does the error message say when is crashes?  Excpetion, "contact windows tech support", "access violation?"

Can you try hitting the '3' key (to download an elevation model for the current area) to see if that crashes?  That will tell me if it's in the new server/http code or in the landsat tile management itself.

Thanks,.

Archived Support / Downloading Track from Vista C no workie
« on: January 27, 2005, 11:48:51 AM »
This is a known issue and one I am trying to clear up.  I do not understand why the Garmin protocol is not behaving as a USB device is supposed to.

What happens is that the transfer completes but when we check how many trackpoints the track is supposed to have it is significantly lost -- we haven't been able to figure out why but have noticed the same problem in other GPS apps.  However, mapsource works 100% so there is a fix, we just haven't found it.

Hopefully we'll get it soon, but thanks for reporting the bug.

Unfortunately both of the authors have been out of town and things occasionally slip through.  I could have sworn I replied to the email, but I see there was someone else with the same issue -- on a VistaC.

I made the movies on topofusion.com using a free program called 'camstudio.'  It takes a bit of tinkering, but the results are pretty good.

Ok.

In maptech tracks and waypoints are exported into different files, even though the formats are similiar.  The tracks are .TXF files (example on the manual, again).  Can you just modify your program to export two files, or run it twice and rename the tracks to .TXF?

I'd rather keep support for .txf and .mxf as output by maptech.

Archived Support / Bigger scale maps?
« on: January 25, 2005, 10:37:25 AM »
There is no large scale map unfortunately -- topo 512m is the largest.

One thing you can do is load the states.gpx file to at least get the borders of all the states.

The new version of TF (due out soon) does have support for large scale satellite imagery, but we're still having problems with crossing zone boundaries, so very large scale maps are not supported yet.

Take a look at:

http://topofusion.com/divide/dividemap.jpg

That's a map of our bike ride this summer with the satellite imagery and the states file loaded.  It's about 140k points.  Glad to see you're using some of the potential of TF.  I don't know of any other programs that don't slow to a crawl.

Yep, combo 1 will still be there and it's topo 2m and aerial 1m.

I haven't tried landsat + topo, but may eventually get to it.  It's so course that it might not be interesting, but anyway for now I am focusing on getting 2.17 ready for a full release.

Thanks for pointing out the problem with combo tiles -- it was actually more involved of a bug than I thought.

Any more bugs or problems anyone?  I'd appreciate it if you'd give it a more or less thorough testing....

Try holding down the control key when you need to pan in draw track mode (or any other mode).

You'll switch to pan mode until you release the control key.

Another alternative is to use the arrow keys to move the map around... and the mouse wheel still works for zooming in/out.

I don't plan on adding screen edge panning any time soon.

Hi,

I'm not sure I quite understand, but if the format is the same you should just be able to rename the files from txt->mxf to read in TopoFusion.  So I'm not sure what you're asking for?

We do support .txt files as in the examples on the user manual page, but they are a bit different than the maptech format files.

Thanks.

Archived Support / Urban tiles appear to not map correctly
« on: January 24, 2005, 06:12:55 PM »
It's definitely a terraserver error -- and users of topofusion have reported others as well, unfortunately.

We'll be releasing a new version soon (featuring satellite images and auto 3D data download), then after that the next beta version will have a way to 'nudge' certian tilesets so that they correct for terraserver error.

Unfortunately this seems like the only way we can deal with this.  Try emailing the folks at terraserver about it too, though.  If they hear enough complaints they may fix it.

Thanks for the interest.

Ah, yes thanks for reminding me about this!  Combo 1m right now is actually Landsat 1024 which is a tileset that I didn't intend to release with the beta version since it has problems when you cross zones or do too large of a picture.

It will be fixed in the next beta or the full release.   I am 99% confident that this will solve all the issues you're describing.

Thanks.

Beta Testing / Auto-DEM download - new feature in next beta
« on: January 21, 2005, 10:43:31 AM »
Well there is a setting for tileset switching which you can crank so that it will shrink tilesets further -- meaning longer before it is 'zoomed to far out.'

But the limitaiton on combo tiles is the aerial, which only goes to 64 Meter.  Topo goes up to 512M, so we're able to zoom further on it.

The landsat stuff is ideal for large scale aerial type images.  Stitching the b/w aerials together looks pretty crappy IMHO, even at 64M.

We haven't heard from too many people with this problem.  You and maybe one or two others.  By switching from Topo 16m to 8m I assume you are switching with the tileset selector in the upper right corner of the main screen, right?

Check your tileset toggles in options->preferences->tilesets.  Make sure you don't have a bogus combination like all/most of the topos turned off.

Otherwise, maybe send us your TopoFusion.log file (smorris@topofusion.com) and I might see something fishy.

Thanks to everyone who has written in about the auto-elevation download.  I knew people would find it useful (and cool).

Unless there are any bugs reported soon I'll release a full version to get it in everyone else's hands.

Jon - I agree that zooming on the map would be cool.  You can crank down the tileset switching slider to get the more detailed maps.  But then your 2d zooming/panning might get a bit more sluggish.

Yes, and it already works!

If you have "auto download" selected you can go to climbing analysis and do "add elevation to track" to add elevations to any track that is loaded.

Give it a try.  I want to make the feature more obvious (it's been pointed out before that it isn't in a logical place) in future versions.
