« on: September 14, 2005, 05:48:00 PM »
Probably all of them in one .BMP file.

Size doesn't really matter.  Not so big that they cover up too much, but big enough to see what they are.

They should all be in the same file, the same size, just one after each other, left to right.

It's probably best if we stick with 16 colors, as well.  Here is the file that has icons we use now:

Hi,

You should be able to use any of those units in 'live tracking' mode.  However, you won't be able to download tracks or waypoints (if those units even support them?).

Thanks.

Archived Support / Log Book Entry
« on: September 14, 2005, 02:08:07 PM »
Hi,

Glad you enjoy the program.

1.  The activity type is for visual purposes but also a plan for the future.  We're going to add better summary statistics that include activity type.

2.  Good idea.  You should be able to link a GPX file to a 'non-GPS' entry, or change the links on other entries.  I'll think about how best to do this.

Thanks for the ideas.

Someone just needs to draw them all.... :-)

Adding support shouldn't be too hard if we had some icons drawn....

Hi,

Sorry, the only way to do georeferences photos is with tracklogs.  When we update the PhotoFusion feature the photos will behave more like waypoints that you can move around, change the image, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Guys,

I think I finally got it.  Please try 2.72 (up now), and if it doesn't work don't bother reporting back.   I'll ride off into the sunset, resigning from computers for the rest of my life it this wasn't it.  Only joking, of course, let me know either way.

I'm not 100% certain at this point, but I think it might have been a compiler bug.  It's take A LOT of effort and experimentation just to get this far.

I may have only fixed the access violations that 2.71 were getting.  I really, really, hope not.

Ok, there's a new beta out:

http://www.topofusion.com/beta.php

I added a few more lines of debug code.  I'm still pretty stumped about what's going on.  If someone can run it and then post or email the log, that would be great.

If I can't figure it out after this, I'll just revert back to the old code and see if that works!!

Thanks.

Yep, we know about this and are trying to track it down!

Take a look at the other thread in the beta forum for more info on it.  I'll post there (or here) when I have a beta for you Magellan users to test.

I have a sportrak map and have not been able to get the new version to fail.  So it's been difficult to figure out what is goign on.

Thanks for the patience.  If I can't get it fixed in the next few days I'll post a 2.7-alt version that uses the code from a previous version when it worked.

Sorry, we don't support any of the native Ozi formats.  I also didn't care for their interface, so I never used the program!

I would hope that by now Ozi read/writes GPX.  You should be able to load TopoFusion GPX files and save them in Ozi formats.

Good luck.

Paul,

We don't have topo maps for Canada, but we do have 16 meter satellite imagery.  Hit the 'L' key to switch to it, or select it in the upper right drop down box.

This isn't well documented, but on dial ups it really helps to crank down the 'number of connections' setting (options->preferences->internet) to 1 or 2.

Plus you can download actual 3D terrain models in Canada too.  Set the 'data source' to Always Download (World) then hit the 3 key.  It isn't all that slow on a dial up.  It helps to turn the 'model detail' setting down as well.

Hi,

I had almost forgotten about the 'from tracks' option.  Cool that someone is using it.

I noticed that you have to select "use DEM files if available" in order for it to work, otherwise it will try to download the 3D data.

The 'from tracks' option is also very slow if the model detail is turned up high and you have a lot of tracks loaded. Maybe that needs to be turned down.

Otherwise, I'm not sure what video setting could be causing a problem.  Your system should more than be able to handle any 3D TopoFusion throws at it.  An update of your video driver might be a thing to try, but I doubt it will effect much.

I'm curious why you don't download topo data (and indeed 3D data now that the feature is available)?

Scott

Archived Support / upgraded version
« on: August 29, 2005, 11:23:18 AM »
Hi,

Either method will work and you will not lose your map data or settings.

"Full install" - requires that you uninstall the current version first, then run the installer to get v2.7

"Update-only" - unzip the files in the compressed directory and extract them all into C:\program files\topofusion.  Make sure you overwrite all files.  Then you're good to go.

Hope this helps.

Rats.  This problem is a tough one because VERY little has changed in the serial code in recent versions.

The 4800 bug made it into 2.70 unfortunately.

I will take my Mag for a ride tomorrow.  Maybe I can get it to fail with a longer track.

Thanks,
Scott

DO I HAVE TO UNLOAD THE 2.5 VERSION TO GET THE 2.7 VERSION?

Not necessarily.  If you're a registered user you can download the "update-only" version of 2.7, then you just copy in a couple files to upgrade to 2.7.

Otherwise you need to uninstall, yes.  Note that you will not lose downloaded maps and settings upon uninstall.

Hi,

Something went haywire with your maps.dat file.  Maybe your disk was full, or somehow that file got locked and/or corrupted?

Anyway, the simple fix is to delete maps0.dat and mapindex.dat from your TopoFusion directory.  They are not removed upon uninstall/reinstall so that people don't lose their map data when upgrading to new versions.

Thanks.

Archived - Feedback and Comments / 3D and dual monitors
« on: August 20, 2005, 07:55:13 AM »
3D does work on some multi-monitor systems -- mine, for example (nvidia card).

The texture size deal is a problem, but it shouldn't crash the system, just switch to software mode.  If you set your system to single monitor does the 3D work?

It could also be a video driver issue, so I'd update as suggested above.

Archived Support / Grid Lines
« on: August 20, 2005, 07:51:06 AM »
We don't support grid lines yet, so these GPX files of grid lines are a pretty cool idea.  Thanks for the link and work on that script, Kuren.

Maybe some waypoints for each gridline with "-47", etc ?

We do plan on adding support for UTM and lat/long grids.  I know they can be very useful when using maps in the field.

Hi,

Sorry - the merge dialog that comes up after download is only available at that time.

The profile/merge tool is the only way to merge, although you can also do it by hand (cut n' paste in the GPX file itself).

You should be able to zoom in/out without much problem to grab your tracks.  But I understand it can be hard to grab the correct track when you have a lot of overlap.  Maybe the network function can help?

Kuren - thanks for helping out while I've been on the road.

G7toWin is a good idea, but newer versions of Mapsource support saving .GPX files.  Go to garmin.com, support, and get the update for Mapsource.  There are other improvements that are worth the update, too.

Profile/Merge tool is what you need.  Just be sure to hold down the shift key as you select each track in succession.  Also, if one section is backwards when added (because it's stored that way) you can reverse it by hitting the 'v' key or by right clicking and selecting "reverse" from the menu.

The hack is long gone from the code.  But it's easier to just do as GalenTX suggested.  Export your own "aerial.jpg" and just copy it in.

That's all the code is doing anyway -- just switching from topo/aerial and exporting a jpeg.  Everything (the photos) should line up.

Future versions will have a selector for tilesets, though.  But it might be a while before we add this feature.

Thanks.

Hi,

Agreed to both!  I've made a few photofusion pages with landsat images but I did it by hacking the source code to force landsat.  It needs to be available as a feature.

The 3d brightness problem has been mentioned before and it's high on the list.

Thanks for the feedback.

Archived Support / Topo 2M ?
« on: August 03, 2005, 08:01:04 AM »
Hi,

If Topo 2M is not working that means there's a problem decoding .GIF files on your system.  2M, 8, 32 and 256 are GIF (the rest are jpeg).  8, 32 and 256 are turned off by default since they are somewhat redundant (and gifs are slower to decode anyway).

2M maps are also redundant (they are the same base maps as 4M).  However, they are gif and better resolution so in some cases they are nice to have.

My first suggestion is to check your screen depth.  Some video cards don't work with our gif library (Corona) if they are in 16 bit screen depth mode.  Try switching to 32 or 24 if so.

Easiest thing to do is just turn of Topo 2M so you can zoom in all the way on Topo 4M.

Let me know if any of this helps.

I've never heard of this problem before.  My first guess is that you either don't have or something is wrong with Windows Installer.  You may try upgrading it here:

Just to check, you're running the executable, not double clicking on the .MSI file, right?

Please post if you find a solution.

I've got several foretrex 201s and I have noticed that the connector for the serial cable on the back of the cradle doesn't work all the time.  I have a couple cradles that won't work at all, in fact.

That's my first guess.  I leave one cradle hooked up to my computer and it always works.

Next time it fails try fiddling with the connector back there.  You might think about getting a new one from Garmin if that's the problem.

I have a small list of feature requests, some huge, some small.  Thanks in advance for listening.

in no order:
1. when no Urban tile is available, use Aerial, instead of showing "not available" as a tile.  Maybe make it a preference.
2. increase the cache limit for tiles, I have more than a terabyte of space available '<img'>
3. have a way to follow playback when in 3D mode
4. make the File >> Export view work like a screenshot button for games, where all I'd have to do is press F10 (for example) and it would auto-save an auto-incremented JPEG in a default folder
5. make the climbing analysis wait 1 second before recalculating, it makes it hard to move the "Minimum Gain" slider bar (especially when my track is my "Seattle to Portland" track with it's 10,200 points of data.
6. have the 3D view go further out into the horizon (maybe with less resolution) like DeLorme's TopoUSA does
7. have a way to make the 3D view brighter, it's kinda dark, especially when exaggerated to 8X height.
8. make a way to output the 3D view with playback to AVI  '<img'>

Thanks in advance for anything you can do about any of these!!!

 - Kuren

Kuren,

Thanks for the extensive list.  All very good ideas.  Quickly, though:

#2 - the tile cache size is in memory, not on disk.  The disk cache is only limited by your hard drive.  Once you download it you always have it.

#5 - yep, something needs to be done here.  I have a track that is 170,000 points (great divide route) and I can't even use the sliders because it takes so long.

I'm surprised your STP track came out with so much total climbing.  What GPS did you use?
