Found the problem.  It looks like TC doesn't like a Cadence value of 255 -- which TF uses for "no cadence".  Since the original file doesn't seem to have any holes, it would seem that maybe you added some points somehow?  Not sure.

Anyway, it'll be an easy fix and will be present in the next version.  In the meantime you could open any TCX file up and do a search replace for <Cadence>255</Cadence> (change it to nothing, just delete).

Thanks for pointing this out.

Did TF go into the normal place as well?  (Program files \ TopoFusion) ?

I'm not quite sure what to make of an invalid path error, but it's not surprising that it works OK too.  TF will just default to a path it knows, or find one that works.

Posting the TF diagnostic log, or emailing it to me might help.  It may show which path is causing the problem.

Interesting idea.  Would be easy to code up.  Hadn't thought about it.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Hmm, sounds like a problem on our end.  Must be peculiar to something in your file, maybe that you have power/cad/hr, or perhaps an odd comment in the a track name or something.

I just saved a TCX using 4.05 and it imported OK into TC 3.53.  But it was just a regular GPX file.

Can you email me the .tcx file that won't import?  support@topofusion.com

TopoFusion Pro / Re: What is GPSMaster.ocx
« on: November 29, 2010, 08:37:21 PM »
Good question!  GPSMaster was the working name for TopoFusion, before it was ever released.  For no particular reason we left it as the name of the activeX control TopoFusion.exe uses.

A few years later the GPSMaster app came out (from a guy in Spain I think) but there is no relation!

I'll do my best on the wish list!  Maybe by Dec 25th!

Oh, really, the dialog is taller than, 768 pixels?  Or what resolution are you running?

There aren't any shortcuts, but I may be able to detect small screens and make the dialog smaller.

Feature Requests / Re: goto feature
« on: November 22, 2010, 04:45:36 PM »
There is a function now, but it is pretty limited.  (Goto->Goto City).  It needs a revamp, for sure.

Biggest annoyance is that it only searches by city name, not state, and sometimes there are multiple cities with the same name.

TF needs a street address geo-locator, too.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: GPX draw order
« on: November 18, 2010, 06:49:56 PM »
Squid is correct, the files are drawn in the order they were loaded.

You can do one thing to control it.  When you double click on a file in the active list it will zoom to show that file, and also force it to be the last file drawn.  So you could do an ordering by double clicking on the files in the order you want.

I'm not sure it's a feature too many people would want (even with different colors it seems like draw order isn't that important).  But I could think about how to include options to control it.

I believe there is some (not well documented) code that limits the grade -- it was put in to keep things reasonable due to general lack of accuracy in GPS elevation calculations.  But, it can be done better, or be set as an option.  I'll see what I can do.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Renaming GPX files
« on: November 13, 2010, 02:43:10 PM »
Hi,

The only place where renaming is allowed is in the 'active file list', which is the lower right part of the main TF window (the one with all the stats).

Oops, you are right, the other places allow it.  Shoot, thanks for pointing that out.

When you actually rename the file using the active list TF will pop up a window confirming the rename.

I'll change it so the 'file picker' window doesn't allow a rename that doesn't work.

Thanks.

You can't, sorry.  If you want, you can try editing it in the GPX file itself, but there's no functionality to read/convert that string in TF as of yet.

Thx.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Splitting a large GPX
« on: November 07, 2010, 06:47:19 PM »
In the properties menu you could delete all *but* the points you want to keep, then save the file.

But what I'd recommend is using the scissors to cut at the start/end point.  Then switch to the merge tool, and select the piece you want.  Now right click and choose "save as..." to save just that piece to a new GPX file.

Hope that makes sense.  Oh, then right click on the original file in the active file list and reload it.

It should be there if you've got v4.05.  "Elevation" is right under Combo and right before "Open Street Map."

Or use the "E" key as a shortcut.

Feature Requests / Re: SAR planning function
« on: October 30, 2010, 07:32:40 PM »
This is one of the weakness of the software for sure.  One limitation here is how to *store* this information in a GPX file.  I will have a look around to see if GPX styles has enough power to do what we want to do.  If it does, that will save me a lot of hassle, and will make the output usable in other software as well.

You *can* do multi-line text boxes in TF -- using the 'description' field of a waypoint.  If you turn the background box on, it'll look like a note.  Problem is you can only use one font size / bold / underline etc, for all notes.  That's the limitation that bugs me.

Thanks for the suggestion, and very cool, as always, to hear TF being used in this way.

2 - Yep, noticed that too.  Ditto here.

3 - I agree that the way it works right now is odd and non-standard.  I think a fixed aspect like photoshop would be a great improvement.  I'll see what I can do.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Combo tiles for Garmin custom maps
« on: October 30, 2010, 11:09:42 AM »
You are correct -- you cannot export combo maps to KMZ files.  I suppose I could simply choose a resolution and enable it, but it's a little tricky since any type of map can be combo'd with any other.  I'll think about it.

Regarding the dropdown, if you left click on it once, it should stay open and give you scroll bars to scroll through the whole list.  Does it not for you?

There's not much we can do about the UTM zone issue in the regular topo mode -- it is a lot harder to stitch them together than it may seem.  However, you *can* export TopoWMS to KMZ.  It's probably not showing up simply because you don't have it enabled in Window->WMS Custom Servers. Make sure it's checked, then reopen the "Export view" dialog and it should be there.  Hopefully that solved your issue!  Let us know.

673
Well spotted good sir!  That is indeed the issue -- the smallest tileset was changed from zoom level 16 (4.0) to 15 (4.05).  Again, this wasn't intentional, but I remember experimenting with it when zoom 16 went down on the myTopo server.

There are some reasons to use zoom 15 instead of zoom 16, but I am not sold on them yet, so I think I will go back to 16 with a quick release and then debate further on it.  As you said, the difference is subtle and you get the bonus of fitting more tiles onto KMZ exports.

Thanks.

674
It is not intentional, no.  I actually did notice the same thing on a friend's PC, but we were not sure the area had actually been downloaded before, and other cached myTopo maps seemed to be showing up.

So, this is something I need to look at quickly.  I can't think of anything that changed from 4.0 to 4.05 that could be causing it, or think why I haven't noticed it on any of my computers.  Very strange.

You may want to jump back to 4.0, see if the maps show up again, and stay there for the time being.

Thanks for the post.

TopoFusion on other OS - Mac / Linux / Re: Running with WINE

Hmm, it looks like everything is there from the TF installer.  It may not be running because of the VB run time libs.  Try installing this:

Those are the only other dependencies it has.

TopoFusion on other OS - Mac / Linux / Re: Running with WINE
« on: October 24, 2010, 09:42:06 AM »
Unfortunately I'm not really able to be of much help as I don't currently have root access on a linux machine.  Maybe soon.

As you know, that's a pretty fundamental error.  I think it suggests an installation issue more than anything having to do with DX.  You might try extracting the files yourself and putting them in a directory (if GPSMaster.ocx is in the same dir as TopoFusion.exe, it should find it), then trying to run it.

Let us know if you make any progress.  I was just thinking about trying this myself... after I get a linux box going.

677
I would like to see some more tools to adjust both elevation and time in TF.  I think a function to add/subtract a constant number would make a lot of sense.

TopoFusion Anouncements / Pro v4.05 out!
« on: October 22, 2010, 07:26:07 PM »

Version v4.05 of TopoFusion Pro was released today.  This version introduces a new map type, "Elevation" which brings vivid colors, shaded by elevation.  These can be great for large scale maps, and also as a powerful visualization tool to help understand an area.  Elevation affects so much -- vegetation, soil, temperature!  The screen shot above is an elevation map in 3D mode, where purple and white represent areas above tree line, and brown/gold/green the lower elevations.

Here is another example, this time using colored sharp contours, and the "combo" feature to combine the elevation map with a myTopo map.

This version also fixes a number of small issues from the first v4 release this summer.

You can't specify a correction by numbers, but the "box select" tool is designed for exactly what you describe.

You can use it to grab all points in your track, or just a portion, then drag them together to correct for the error or offset.  Give it a shot.

« on: October 17, 2010, 07:53:59 AM »
Steve,

Didn't I respond to this in email?  I probably missed it, sorry about that.

The request string did change for the AZ server.  In fact they seem to change it every once in a while, enough that it's no longer part of the Color tileset (AZ aerials come from USGS now).  But it works for me with the following info:

server: imagery.azmap.org

request: ArcGIS/services/AZ_2005_Imagery/MapServer/WMSServer?REQUEST=GetMap&VERSION=1.1.1&FORMAT=image/jpeg&BGCOLOR=0xFFFFFF&LAYERS=0,1,2,3,4&STYLES=,,,,&TRANSPARENT=TRUE&EXCEPTIONS=application/vnd.ogc.se_xml

Be sure to copy the request all as one line.  Let me know if it doesn't work for you.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: increase geotrack line size on map?
« on: October 13, 2010, 03:05:13 PM »
You can do this, per track.  Right click on an individual track in the map (when in the pan / hand mode) and choose "track properties".  There are settings for width, color, style (dashed, etc).  These are saved in a standard way in GPX.

Let me know if you have any other questions.  Great looking map!  Do you have a link to a website with others?

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Track upload freezing Edge 705
« on: October 08, 2010, 11:33:20 AM »
Hmm, that's strange.  How many points did the file have?  It may be that it is too large and something with the update introduced a bug (in the Edge).  I'd simplify it down to 10k or less and try it again.

It's unlikely to be a TF issue, though it's always possible.

Ah ha, thanks for making it glaringly obvious... That is indeed a strange.  I take it you haven't noticed this in previous versions of the software?

Can you give me coordinates for that area -- if it is so repeatable for you it may be something I can find too.

Thanks.

Beta Testing / Re: Elevation Tiles- Comments
« on: September 29, 2010, 07:05:33 AM »
But I also ran into the "downloading" behavior when switching to a 3D view even though the elevation tiles had been fully rendered in the 2D view. In other words from a nice colored (and shaded) 2D display of elevation tiles, I hit "3" and I see a display comprised of black and white "downloading" tiles, but in full 3D.

Right, that is because you are using the texture multipler to get a higher resolution texture in 3D mode, so it is actually going to the next detail level of tiles -- which them need to be generated since they haven't yet.

Just wanted to note that this is expected...

Beta Testing / Re: Elevation Tiles- Comments
« on: September 29, 2010, 07:03:50 AM »
Thanks Ken, those are good ideas.  I do plan on adding more colors and the ability to select ranges for each color, not just the min/max as is now.

Having a transparent option for each color is a great idea I hadn't thought of.

Slowness -- I can, in the future, try using multiple threads to generate the tiles.  On machines with multiple cores it would definitely speed things up.  Just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Having waypoints for the high points in a scene is an interesting idea, I'll have to think on that a bit.

Thanks for the feedback.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Difficulty Index scores are very useful...
« on: September 27, 2010, 04:51:30 PM »
Correct, it is sensitive to the number of points.  For a true comparison always use the same GPS with same settings for tracklog recording.

Elevation data is in the calculation.. fairly directly.  You'll see more total elevation gain for tracks with higher point density as well... (since it is just a sum, it is prone to error, so the more observations you have, the more error...)

Cool to hear that it matches up with reality for you.  Great feedback!

Feature Requests / Re: Key Mapping Option for Topofusion?
« on: September 27, 2010, 11:39:27 AM »
I can think about it, but I think it may be more effective for people that want to remap keys to simply take matters into their own hands.  Have a look for other software that does this and let us know if you find anything suitable.

If not, I'll consider adding it -- but it seems like a pretty specialized/esoteric feature that not too many people will be interested in taking the time to dig into.

TopoFusion Basic / Re: Change units for speed

You can change between mph and kmh, but there is no setting for knots.

However, I do multiplayback videos for sailing races, and they want knots, too.  So I can add it if you are interested and want to check back in a month or so for the next release of the software.

Beta Testing / Re: Elevation Tiles- Comments

The really annoying thing is how long it takes TF to exit (not just beta version).  10's of seconds.

Wow, wonder what is up with that.  Shouldn't ever be more than a second or two.  Sometimes it can stall a bit if it is waiting to kill threads.  How many download (internet tab under prefs) threads do you have yours set at?

697
Beta Testing / Re: Elevation Tiles- Comments
« on: September 27, 2010, 11:25:38 AM »
Ken -- sorry about the confusion with the downloading tile.  The elevation data is there, so the downloading tile is misleading.  It just shows that tile while the tiles are being generated.  I should plug something different in.  The speed that the tiles come in is definitely tied to your processing power.  I've never seen it take 40 seconds.

When you change the 'shading preset' -- you mean the color scheme, right?  That will force a regeneration of all elevation tiles -- so that is the expected behavior, I think.

Sorry, I see that it is 3D, but that's always been the way it works, right?  The model only covers the current screen view from 2D, and has black edges around otherwise?  Or is this something different?

Beta Testing / Re: Elevation tiles vs. 3D

Thanks for the screenshot -- are you going in to 3D mode before the elevation tiles are generated?  (i.e. you have downloading tiles while still in 3d mode).  It does appear that the min/max setting is not getting there -- shading otherwise looks correct, just wrong min/max.

On the last screenshot, that isn't just the end of the 3d model?  Or is that in 2D?
