TopoFusion Basic / Problem creating OpenGL

When I try to download data from Edge 305, I get the following error.
"error initializing Com/USB port, check for other programs using this port and that device is connected and turned on."
I'm connecting using a USB post and I far as I know , no other programs are using this port.
any help would be appreciated.
Jim

I think this belongs in a different thread, but anyway..

The 305 is USB, yes.  Does the unit successfully connect with Training Center (garmin supplied program). With that error message it's likely there's just a problem with the connection.  Also, you will need to have installed the garmin USB driver (comes with the unit or can be downloaded off www.garmin.com).

Best guess it that you don't have the garmin usb driver installed.

I keep get this error Problem creating OpenGL texture, Max texture size=1024x1024, need 2048x1024. I have a ViewSonic VG910s and the hightest it will go is 1280x1024 and the video card is a Matrox PowerDesk version 6.95.005

Carl

By the way, some users have reported that updating to newer video drivers has taken care of this issue for them.

YMMV

Rich,

201 still works just fine in v2.85 (the latest on the web page).

In the beta version (2.86) we're still sorting things out for the edge w/ cadence and a few other issues.  Getting the cadence stuff working caused the old ones (201) to fail.  We're getting there, though.

Thanks.

Well, I have been using a Forerunner 305 lately, so HR support is more likely to happen than ever.  Time is tight for the next couple weeks, but I plan on taking a serious look at what can realistically be done in TopoFusion with HR data.

Agreed that we'll need a display for it on playback.  Pulsing might be pretty cool.

Re: GPX.  There is not standard way to store it.  This is one thing that's stopped me from adding support since that's sort of step 1.  So it'll have to be a TF extension, which is OK.

Stay tuned...

That's odd.  Try deleting the file 'TFlog.csv' from your tracks directory (likely C:\Program Files\TopoFusion).  That should get rid of any bogus values or strings in there.

You can add any files you want to the log from the logbook dialog.

The name/code you were sent in email is valid for 5 copies of the program.  That means you can have 5 copies running at the same time.

Check your email, I will explain more there.

TopoFusion does not export Mapsource (mps) format files, if that's what you're asking.  But Mapsoruce itself does now open GPX files, so you should be able to get any data imported.

As for a 3D program, TopoFusion does 3D.  Not sure what you mean by elevation site plan.

We don't export anything like shapefile or .dbx.

You mean the waypoint name being displayed next to it?

In Options->preferences->fonts you can choose "comment" for the display text (Default is waypoint name, and since all waypoints have to have a name, there will always be something there).  Comments can be blank (they are by default), so changing what is displayed to comment will get rid of the box next to your points.

Make sure you read the text on the "help" button.  Likely your problem is the E/W hemisphere.  Western hemisphere coordinates are negative.

Otherwise, try to match the examples on the help screen.  Are you using UTM or Lat/Lon?

This is not hard to do in TopoFusion.

First you'll want to move the map to the general area.  Use Goto->Goto Coordinate to enter one of the corner's coordinates.

Then, using the waypoint tool (little flag marker) click a point anywhere on the map.  You'll get the add waypoint dialog and can change the coordinates of the waypoint to be added in that dialog.  When you add the waypoint a dialog will come up asking you to choose a .GPX file for the waypoint.  All further add waypoints you do will go into that file again by default.

Do that for all of your corners.  Do "connect the dots" use the pencil tool.  When finished, right click on the map and choose "save as.." to save the drawn line to a GPX file.

Then it should just be a matter of finding the right zoom level to fit all your corners and export an appropriate image in topo or aerial mode.

Hope this helps.

Can you edit the waypoints in PhotoFusion?

Not sure what you mean -- photofusion doesn't use waypoints.  The photos just stay on the track.

When we start to re-work parts of PhotoFusion they will be waypoints so they can be adjusted by hand afterwards, edited, etc.  It would be nice to be able to add photos that don't have time stamps (or were outside the time of any GPS track).

Yep.  Just use the draw track tool (pencil) to trace it out (the more points the better, don't just do major turns).  After you save the track (right click and do save as..), it won't have 3D data, but if you go to Climbing Analysis and choose the newly saved file you can do "add elevations to track."

Hope that helps.

There wasn't an intentional change.  I'm having some problems sorting out the location that the "new track" flag sits in between the various GPS types.

So while correcting some units to *not* split every track point, it might make others merge everything.

Are you using 2.85 or 2.86?

I'm working on getting it all sorted out for the next beta.

Thanks.

Funny that you mention this.  The MB team tried to hire one of our developers (with an out of the blue job offer).

One of the reasons we weren't interested is that we didn't find most of what they are doing to be very interesting or useful.  I agree about the slow load times and poor maps.  It's all about the maps, graphics and fast response time.

They are accomplishing one thing, though, and that's collecting a massive database of GPS tracks -- whether voluntarily or not.  They are "mapping the world" -- but right now they do almost nothing with all the data.

Of course, Motion Based is owned by Garmin, so it's no surprise that each unit has an "invitation" to check out their own software.

The guys are MB are a good crew, actually.  They're just doing things differently than we do.  And in my eyes we don't really compete (much) with them.

Thanks for the report on the 205.  I'm seeing the same thing with my 305 -- ridiculous numbers.  I am 90% sure this is due to the 1 point per second tracklog.  The more fine the resolution of the tracklog the more total climbing you will gain -- simply because that statistic (total climbing) is a SUM and it can only increase.  So it's sensitive to minor abberations in elevation.

I hope Garmin addresses this (with a better elevation smoothing technique).  Otherwise we'll have to take more drastic measures in TopoFusion itself.

As for "follow download" -- yep, it does not work in USB mode.  The points come in so fast that the map just goes all over the place.  It's not very useful and usually annoying, so we disabled it.  I suppose we could gray out the box (and have it unchecked) if you're in USB mode.

Not sure what you mean by photofusion saying the time is 19:01 -- I assume you mean the GPX file itself?

I've got to agree.  The tracklogs the new units produce are very impressive.

Now we just need a unit with 100,000+ points on it and we'll be where we should have been, technology-wise, 5 years ago.  TopoFusion is ready for big track logs -- maybe they've been afraid since other mapping software can't handle it.

Also, note that not all of the "X" units have the new receiver.  It's only the 205, 305 (edge and forerunner) and the 76 and 60.  The legend, vista, etc do not have it.

This problem is due to a limitation of the driver, but doesn't have anything to do with the screen resolution you are in or the max your monitor can go to.

Unfortunately we can't really do anything about the limitation in TopoFusion.

Cool, thanks for trying it.  I'll wait to hear more about the addition of HR and Cadence.

Yep, it looks like you have to "reset" before the garmin track protocol can "see" the tracks on the Forerunners.  I still need to find out what the total capacity of the "history" is.  I captured a ~3 hour ride that was about 9000 points, and even after doing another rider it still downloaded at full resolution.

Try the new beta version at:

(For registered users)

Demo users can download:

http://topofusion.com/GPSMaster.ocx

Save it to "C:\Program Files\TopoFusion" overwriting the existing file.

Let me know how if it works.  My hunch is that it will fix things for the Edge also.  I assume that you're using the heart rate strap with your edge 305?  It's the heart rate data that was messing things up.

BTW-I can get the HR data now and I'm starting to plan on how to integrate it into TopoFusion.

Anything different you might be doing?  I just turn it on, hit start, then stop and reset before downloading.

Thanks for the explanation.  I'll put adding TIF meta data (photofusion) to the 'idea' list, but I'll be honest--it's not going to be much of a priority anytime soon.

For people serious enough to be doing RAW photos and converting I don't think it will be much hassle to move to JPEG for photofusion usage.

Advanced features (described on separate pages):

3D visualization

Climbing Analysis
Difficulty and Effort index

Image Processing / Combo Maps
PhotoFusion - Auto placement of photos on tracks
Simplifying and Interpolating Data
Multi-Track Playback

Each of those goes to a separate page, so it's not just a list of features, but a list of links to pages explaining them.

In any case, glad you like the program and thanks for registering.

Hi,

A route is usually a lower resolution (much fewer points), and has waypoints associated with each "route point."  A track log is higher resolution and has no waypoints.

You don't need any GPS data to download images.  You can just zoom/pan to any area you want.  Or you can use "Goto Coordinate." to get anywhere.  It's much easier to have GPS data for places you're interested -- then you can get there faster.

No the maps won't increase in clarity if you register, unless you count the removal of the "Demo" tiles.  However, 2M resolution Topos are turned off by default.  They are GIF and slightly slower/redundant, but they are more clear than the 4M topos.

Turn them on in Options->Prefs->Tilesets

Last, no we don't have UTM grid lines yet.

Hi,

Did you read this page (pointed to by the user manual) :

http://www.topofusion.com/photofusion.php

It gives directions for using PhotoFusion.   The HTML Imagemap is saved in the "Destination Directory" that's right next to the "Genereate HTML Imagemap" button.  It'll be an .htm file, so if you double click on it, your browser should open it.

As for the program used to view images, it's up to Windows.  Whatever program you have associated with .JPG will open.  I use ACDSee, personally, since it displays quickly and remembers zoom/fit settings.

Good luck.

mapsX.dat files store maps downloaded from Terraserver or OnEarth.  They will continually get larger the more areas you look at.

They roll over into ~650 meg chunks.  So it starts at maps0.dat.

You can delete the file(s) with no loss in functionality, you'll just have to re-download all your maps.  Be sure to also delete the file "mapindex.dat" which stores all the pointers into the mapsX.dat files.

I am assuming the nudging tool adjusts the tile set, not the elevation data. Where I am located (Albuquerque, NM) I am finding that the map tile sets are spot on accurate, but the 3-D is just a little bit off. If I try to nudge the tile set, it just thrown the track off of the map. It is most noticable at 2 and 4 M topo. I estimate that the elevation data is about 25 meters south of the Map and GPS Data. How is the best way to check and verify what the offset is and is there a way you can fix it? you mention contributing corrections, how is that done? What's the best way to verify corrections?

Brian

That's right, the nudge factor does not effect elevation data.  Tracks will stay put, so if you want to use tracks and map overlayed on 3D, there isn't a good solution at this point.  If you turn tracks off you can use the current corrections dialog to adjust for the error in the elevation data (just the reverse of it).

The corrections done so far are just "eye-balled" -- hopefully using a known, surveyed spot.  There's no really good way to verify them other than by sight.

I don't think it would be too hard to add "3D models" to the dropdown for corrections.  I'll see what I can do.

Thanks.
