Beta Testing / New Beta - v2.91
« on: July 31, 2006, 04:10:22 PM »
Thanks for the feedback, Larry.

In 2.92 (out just now) I changed the speed limit to go down to 3 mph.  It doesn't throw the points out, it just colors them the maximum (whatever the limit is).

Great idea about setting the low speed limit.  There's already an implicit lower limit in the calculation of "moving time", but depending on the activity, this value really needs to be changed.  I'll try to get it into the next version.

Thanks.

Good point, Steve -- that's an effective solution.

Thanks for the tip on the elevation exaggeration slider.  I just fixed it.  New beta to be released later today... featuring a little something you've been waiting years for... ;)

I guess I don't know what your drive setup is, but presumably there were map files from the previous (non-beta) version that you upgraded at first started having problems with...

In any case, I don't think either of these issues -- index file troubles or elevation data loss are unique to the beta.  I will anxiously await a further report about the elevation data, but that code didn't change since 2.90.

Please let me know.  Also, what GPS unit are you using?

Thanks.

Hum, wonder why it still crashed.  In any case, it appears your Mapindex file on C: is trashed.  You should be able to install TF wherever you want as long as you are willing to restart with no maps downloaded/saved.  Just make sure you delete the Mapindex.dat file and any MapsX.dat files.

You can also change the directory to use for map data, so TF can be on one drive and maps on another.

It would have been even better if Garmin had made courses compatible with the concept of 'saved tracks.'  There's really nothing new going on in a course.

Happily, Garmin finally released the specs on the new units, so course support is a possibility.  I'll add it to the 'todo' list.  Thanks.
Glad to know there's a workaround in the interim.

You can definitely merge tracks from the main window -- the profile tool doubles as a merge tool.  Just hold down shift between clicks, and when you are done (you can reverse direction, too), right click and choose "save as..."

Bob,

Thanks for posting your log.  I think I've found a long standing bug.  I'm not sure why moving to 2.91 caused it, but nevertheless, please try downloading and installing 2.91 one more time.  This time I think it will not crash.

Something is amiss with the index file, obviously, and the code we had that was supposed to take care of it had a bug itself.  Please let me know if it works or not.

If it doesn't I have a utility that will rebuild your index file based on the map data you have downloaded.

Thanks.  This one has eluded us for some time.

Feature Requests / request - elevation information
« on: July 27, 2006, 11:14:31 AM »
Yep, it would be great to see elevation at the mouse pointer.  Problem is that we currently don't store elevation data that is downloaded from the NASA server.  Hopefully this will change soon (a tiling system similar to the 2d maps) and then it will be easy to add this.

As for getting elevation gain without drawing the track - I don't understand what you mean.  How can you compute a number for a track that doesn't exist?  You have to know where it goes!

I don't think the minimum gain field could ever be changed, except with the slider.  I could be wrong, but it hasn't changed recently.

Thanks for the feedback.

Archived Support / Downloading large areas - Like a State
« on: July 27, 2006, 11:10:13 AM »
Hi,

No, sorry, there's no source other than the server itself.

I'm not sure downloading an entire state at all detail levels is really a good idea.  That's a lot of data on the 1 meter aerial level.  How large is your hard drive?   '<img'>

I'd try disabling some of the smaller tilesets which will decrease the  time and space taken exponentially.

E.G. you might be able to get the whole state at 16 Topo and Aerial, but you may as well forget 1 meter and likely 4 meter as well.

Hmmm I downloaded 2.91 unzipped and OKed replacing the original files exe and ocx.  And clicking either shortcuts or the program file it starts to show the small rectangular startup picture and then it is gone.  Nothing.  No error messages Nothing.  It is installed on H: drive and the 2.85 was working.  Seems like I had trouble with it and had to install 2.85 2X  But I may be wrong.  Anyway this one is not working at all for me.  Windows task manager has no topofusion listed.  Any help?

Bob

Hi Bob,

I'd try downloading 2.91 again in case it got corrupted somehow.

Failing that, look at (or post) your TopoFusion.log file, as Thomas suggested.

It might give us some clue where it is dying.  Next idea is to move your TopoFusion.ini file somewhere else (or delete it, though you'd lose settings).  That should reset all your settings and TF should at least start up.

Let us know how it goes.  Thanks.

Some new stuff:

2.91 - [7/25/06]

Added speed shading for tracks (preferences->fonts/colors)
Added speed limit - throw out bogus speeds (prefs->units)
Added slideshow of photos during track playback (photofusion)
Added Clear button to photofusion dialog
Added "Download DEM" to climbing analysis (no more forced downloads)

---------------------------

I've been having fun with the slideshow / photofusion feature in partcular.  Kinda cool to watch the replay of a ride and have the photos pop up at the spot you took them.  It works better if you have a good image display program like ACDSee.  And even better if you have two monitors so you can view the photos in full size.

Also, I've been able to get some cool visuals of recent rides here in Golden, CO using the new speed shading:

Check it out and please post here with any ideas or problems!

Thanks.

« on: July 16, 2006, 09:07:57 PM »
Best guess on this is bad video drivers.  The TF rescaling code has worked on so many video driver and monitor combinations it's kind of hard to believe there would be a bug.  Several users and one of the developers have reported 100% image quality with widescreen monitors too.

Check for newer drivers and report if it makes any difference.

Otherwise I will try to think about how to go about debugging this.  It may be that changing the directX routine we use is the only way.  It just so happens that we're contemplating a switch to new directx (direct3d) at the moment.  So it may solve itself soon enough.

Thanks,.

Awesome Dan.  Thanks for the props and positive feedback.  It's always great to hear from people using the software, especially the network feature!

PS - We published the details of the network algorithm in an IEEE paper.  It's all there!  I admit that it's not easy to grasp what's going on though.  That's part of what makes it an interseting problem for me.  I hope to get some more time to improve it in the future.

Hey... that PS just clicked.

There are tracks in my units memory that have no detail data. Will that cause a problem for TF? I don't see those days showing up in the save track dialog box.

TC

Shouldn't cause any problems, and there's no way that I know of (no documented way, that is) to retrieve that data, either.

Yep, the least it should do is simplify them into saved tracks so that you have *something* from the ride.

Hi,
Thanks for asking... but my week of riding probably wasn't anywhere near as thrilling as yours. The most exciting thing was what didn't happen.
Spent the week riding (and camping) the Katy trail across Missouri. The female companion (who is not into camping) is still speaking to me after the ride. It's some of the small victories that are important.

For TF and the beta 2.88B

SUCCESS!!!!!!!

So where was your week of riding at?

TC

PS Now that all the tracks are on the download screen without me having to do a bunch of merge/deletes, I see that I exceeded the 10,000 points after three days of riding. So I guess it makes sense that it dumped the detail data of the previous 2 days rides. Course I'd rather see it cut it down to maybe the 250 ponts of the older series then just dump it all. Sigh.

Thanks for the report, including the crash.  I'll see if I can figure out what was wrong.  Sometimes the USB downloads are a little flaky, so I'm not too worried about it dying partway.  But access violation is no good!

How many miles on the Katy Trail?  What kind of setup did you run (panniers, bob, etc).  Bummer that you lost data due to the ridiculous 10k (slightly more in 205/305s, but only marginally) limit on Garmin units.  It really burns.  Glad you and the missus came out of the trip on good terms.  That's pretty rare, I think.  You've got a keeper...

My ride was only slightly more than 3 days, but it felt like a week and I'm still recovering from it.  It was 'the Grand Loop', a 360 mile, unsupported race in Grand Junction/Moab.

The long and gory story is here:

Intel chipset = on board = usually crappy driver support.

Topo 2, 8, 32 and 128 are different than 4,16,64,256,512.  The former are GIF, the latter JPG.  For some reason there are drivers that don't like our GIF conversion.  People have reported success in updating drivers -- for the video card, not the monitor.

You're right that disabled tilesets shouldn't be shown in the dropdown.  There's no problem selecting one that's disabled -- it just goes to the nearest one that is enabled.

A temporary solution to this is to simply disable all the GIF tilesets and use the JPGs.  I almost always run TF in that mode anyway since JPGs decode and therefore display faster, anyway.

Only when I do a big export or something do I turn on 2 Meter GIF.  The other tilesets are actually redunant -- just different scales of the same base maps as the jpegs.

Puzzling, puzzling!

It sounds like moving to v2.88 may solve your problem -- at least the data loss part.  I changed the order, as you suggested, so that the backup and real file are written first, then the logbook entry it made (which, incidentally, calls a different thread).  My guess based on the info you've provided is that you won't lose any more files, but you may still be in the situation of not being able to communicate with your GPS until reboot or at least closing of programs, etc.

I think the Garmin USB driver is not 100% reliable, in general.

v2.88 also has 5 or so changes/fixes that arose from this discussion or your other posts over the last few days.  It can almost be called "v2.88-BRH."  '<img'>

Thanks.

Thomas,

Thanks for testing.  Made some progress in 2.88, but it looks like there was still one more step (hopefully).

I think it should work this time.  I don't know what those bogus points with 180's are.  This time we shouldn't get so many track segments all split up.  Hopefully none of the 180 points will make it either.

It's still 2.88 since it was one line of code that I changed and I didn't want to do a whole new version.

I'm crossing my fingers this time.

What was your week long ride?  Where?  Details!

Thanks.

Another new beta.  2.88:

2.88 - [6/28/06]

Fixed track downloading for Edge units with HR and cadence sensors active
Changed drawing tracks (pencil) behaviour.  Less duplicate points
 and cleaner "free-hand" tracks
Fixed crash loading network GPX files with waypoints deleted
Added warnings when merge/delete tracks dialog box open
Fixed problem with multiple downloads while merge/delete dialog open
Made backup GPX file add "-new" to filename instead of overwriting a duplicate
Fixed problem removing files from logbook
Added ability to open multiple files at a time in File->Open

Anyone that is willing, the GPS track downloading function could really use some testing.  I changed the way it detects the unit, so we really need as much testing on as many units as we can, just to be sure.

Hopefully it will work for all Garmin units now!

If you are able to successfully download a track please report here with your unit type!  Thanks!!

If you can duplicate the problem, check if you can download again after completing a single download.  If you can't this probably tells us that the GPS thread is dying after it saves the logbook but before it saves the backup and/or actual file.

Uh oh.

2 questions:

1 - how about the backup file?  Is that there?

2 - did you close the Merge/Delete dialog after you saved the track.  This would verify that the track was actually there in the active list, not just shown because the dialog is still active and showing downloaded tracks.

Thanks.  I'm looking at it right now, actually.  Adding the non-overwriting backup, and also added some warnings about the merge dialog still being open.

Are you sure it was working in v2.85 or any previous ones?  Nothing significant has changed in the display or graphics code since 2.85, so I'd be surprised if it was due to the beta version(s).

I know that TopoFusion works for several users on other widescreen monitors (including Dell's).  My guess is that the issue is graphics card related.  I'd check for updated drivers.  Often people with this problem are using onboard graphics cards that have very poor drivers.

Yeah I'm not sure about opening multiple.  I'd like to be able to open multiple, too.

The order is as listed above, however, there's no way to "stop" in the middle.  #1 doesn't happen until after you choose the filename.

The "save as" dialog is modal (that's the term) meaning you can't do anything until you dismiss it.  But that doesn't matter given the above -- once you give it the filename, TF goes and adds to the logbook, saves and then saves the backup.

But you're right that the fact that the logbook entry is there doesn't mean the file ever got saved out.  It just means that you actually did choose a file name for it, and that you weren't fooled by it being displayed on the map.

The fact that your next GPS transfer hung is indicative of something dying on the GPS thread.  It's threaded so that the program can continue to run while the GPS is downloading.  So something crapped up between writing the logbook entry and saving the file.  Too bad it didn't crash out to TopoFusion's crash reported (dunno where the "windows crash" things go, certainly not to us).

I'll see if I can spot anything with this in mind.

It does have some checks for duplicates.  I'm not sure what criteria it uses for duplicates though -- probably filename + path.

It should be OK to load up a few thousand files.  I've done it quite a few times.  Display speed may suffer if you try to pan around in an area where most of your data is.  If you're far away, it should work OK.

As far as I know, TF does use the standard windows dialog for opening and saving.  When you get a "save" dialog you can do things like new directories, rename file, etc.  The little "mini-explorer" thing on the main window isn't really standard, but it's just a short cut to data.  You can always use File->Open.

I'd think if MS wanted to move overwritten files to the recycle bin, they'd have done it themselves in that dialog.  I guess we could add that functionality, because it does make sense.

The backups are saved only at download time.  No other backups are made.  Usually things can be reconstructed as long as you have the original data, so that's why we save the original, from-the-GPS data.

BTW, the order of operations is:

1. add entry to logbook
2. save original file in directory requested in save dialog
3. save backup file

So best guess is that something happened inbetween 1 and 2.  The program did continue to function after the save, right?

I've never heard of this happening before, but I'll keep it in mind for my own use of the program and if anyone else reports a problem.  Please keep me informed if you learn or think of anything else.

It might be prudent to swap #1 and #2.

Thanks.

Thanks for reporting back and for taking a thorough look at it.  I'll have another pass over the code to see if any light bulbs go off.

As for the recycle bin, it's not a bad idea, but it just isn't as intuitive (to me, anyway) to send files there without telling the user.  Personally, I almost never use the recycle bin, period.  If I was looking for data I thought was missing, overwritten, lost, altered, etc, I'd expect to find it in the backup directory, not in the recycle bin.  The different filenames would just be different versions of that particular file.  That way you always have the data instead of relying on windows to not empty it.

Make any sense to you?

The fact that it's in the logbook means that it *should have* been saved out to disk.  No logbook entries are made until you save a file.

Any chance your disk was full, or having other problems?

I tried to recreate just what you did and I got both files in the two directories, and as expected, the backup file only had the most recent one.  This was with a Forerunner 305, which is USB.  I don't have a Vista C, but the different is not large in terms of what TopoFusion is doing.

I agree that the backup system should probably not overwrite files.  It shouldn't happen often, but adding a suffix like "-back" would help to make sure more data isn't loss with multiple downloads.  I'll see if I can get that rolling in the next version.

In general, though, I'd keep all the GPX file names unique just to be safer (not just with this issue, but elsewhere and with other programs, too).

As for what happened, I really don't know.  If you notice it again please let us know.  I can't think of anything that would cause such a loss, and I can't recreate it, so I'm don't know what else to do.

Hi,

Nothing worse than losing data, so we'll take this one very seriously.

TopoFusion handles files of the same name but different paths without problem.  But there might be some issue there.  I'll try saving files as you did.

I can't think of anything that would cause a file that was previously saved to go away.  There's no code to delete or move files.

It sounds like both files have entries in the logbook, is this true?  The fact that the biking file made it into the logbook is troubling.  Initially I thought you looked at the data in the "merge tracks" dialog but had forgotten to save.  I suspected this because you said it was still highlighted.  TopoFusion is quick to "unhighlight" a track (almost any right click or change in mouse mode will do it), but if you highlighted the downloaded but not saved track in the merge dialog it will stay highlighted until you close the merge dialog -- no mouse clicks unhighlight it.  This brings up the issue that the program should warn the user if the merge dialog is still open and they are closing the program.  Since the data is displayed on the map you can sometimes be fooled into thinking the data is actually "there" (saved).  It's happened to me.

You know about the 'backup' directory, right?  Every GPX file is saved there.  However, since you named the files the exact same thing, it's sounds like the file in the backup dir will be the most recent one -- the hiking one.  When writing to the backup dir, TopoFusion will overwrite an existing file of the same name.  But it shouldn't effect the actual file in any way.

Let me know if you make any progress of this.  Do a search to make sure the file didn't get moved or saved somewhere else on accident.

I don't think anything in the USB realm could be causing it.  It is possible, but if the download completed and gave the merge dialog, USB is then out of the picture.

Thanks for the report.

The only thing we're still working on is the addition of Cadence to the tracklog.  (For the Edge and Forerunner 305's).  Heart rate works.

If you have a chance to try it out, please post any results here.

Thanks.

Hey Thomas,

I've been away, racing bikes and traveling for the past month.  This is long overdue, but if you could try downloading with the Edge + Cadence using the new beta (v2.87) I'd most appreciate it.

It most likely will not work (many tiny tracks as before), but if you can send me the TopoFusion.log output I should be able to get it to work in about 2 minutes.

Thanks a lot.

Where are you looking (continent or country?).

Two possibilities:

1 - You're in the U.S. but are entering positive longitude, rather than negative (look for a warning message about eastern hemisphere).

2 - You're outside the U.S. and need to select the "Landsat" tileset by hitting the "L" key or choosing Landsat in the upper right tileset dropdown.  Topo maps are not supported for areas outside the US.

Hi,

TopoFusion doesn't natively support the GPS you listed, but it's likely you could get the output from the GPS into .GPX format.  If you can find a way to get GPX files, you'll be good to go.

Thanks for the interest.

Yep, I see what you're saying.  It may be possible for the track breaks to show up when you upload using the "newtrack" flag in the protocol.  I'll have to check how it's being handled right now.

Are you uploading to active log or saved tracks? With saved tracks they should show up as separate (non-connected) tracks, but you'll be limited to either 10 or 20 (depending on the unit).  You've got more than that in the network shown above.

I'll have a look-see.

Archived Support / .txf color code

Hi,

Good observation.  The .TXF format does allow for color (one byte) so we could be saving out an approximation of the color saved in the GPX file to .TXF.  I guess I view .TXF more as an export/import file format, where color is less important.  I'll add it as a possible item to look at, but it's not going to be a priority.

You're right that it's always red right now.

TopoFusion on other OS - Mac / Linux / Topofusion on the Mac

We've heard from several users that have successfully used TF on Virtual PC.  So I'm not sure what could be wrong in your case.

Blank tiles with white noise means you're in an area with no maps.  Could that be it?

If TF fails to make connection to Terraserver (or OnEarth) it will report a message and switch internet downloading off.  Is it doing that?

You're right, photofusion is not very smart at handling thumbnails of images of odd aspect ratios, such as panoramas.  I'll add it to the list of items to work on.

Simple fix for now is to use your own image program to make the thumbnail yourself.  Just overwrite and make sure it's named the same as the jpeg file(s) generated by Photofusion.

Thanks.
