TopoFusion Pro / Re: Empty effor and difficulty indexes?
« on: July 20, 2011, 09:59:39 AM »
Never heard of that before.  Just to check, all these files have elevation and time data, right?  (Both indices will be zero especially if there is no elevation data).

TopoFusion Pro / Re: linking seperate gpx tracks into one track.
« on: July 13, 2011, 07:08:55 PM »
You can use the Join Track tool. It's the toolbar icon that has an arrows pointing toward each other (one on the top, the other on the bottom) with a squiggly line between them. Simply click it, click on your first track, then your second, third, ... When complete, right click the new track and choose Save As.

Jeremy

Thanks for helping out Jeremy!

Yep, Dave posted here a bit, and of course even more on bikepacking.net.

Sounds like you need to merge those 36 (!) tracks into one using the merge tool.  There's no automatic way to do it unfortunately, but 36 clicks isn't too bad I suppose...

Once it's saved you should be able to simplify and split as appropriate. The only thing you really need separate tracks for might be different options on the trip -- and usually there are only a few of those, so save a couple and let your intended route take up the bulk of it.

Where is your trip?

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Track -> Route -> Dakota 20?
« on: July 11, 2011, 02:37:56 PM »
Hmm, TF doesn't actually distinguish between uploading routes and tracks for the newer (USB mass storage) Garmin units.  This should at least change to disable the option, or we can probably support it as well.

So, yes, right now it will only upload as a track to the Dakota.

Personally I don't recommend using routes since they are limited in the number of points they can be (and thus detail), but that's just an aside.

On the tool bar, it looks like a little recycle symbol with a red and blue arrow.  Click on tiles individually to reload them.

Have you tried using the reload maps tool to re-grab some of the erroneous tiles?  I am getting good tiles in that area right now.

Beta Testing / Re: Beta 4.22: fixes

Thanks for the report.  Looks like it was just server hiccups.  I saw the same thing for some areas at the end of last week.  Looking better now.

Color aerials seem to be loading quickly for me today.  I definitely saw some server hiccups over the weekend though.  Sorry 'bout that.

Beta Testing / Re: Beta 4.22 - map loading
« on: July 06, 2011, 08:14:49 PM »
If it's a partial tile (looks like it is) that's just what the server is giving.  Might change later on, esp if they are doing maintenance or something on it.  Try the open aerials, maybe that set is stitched together a little more cleanly?

Beta Testing / Re: Beta 4.22 - map loading
« on: July 06, 2011, 06:32:44 PM »
I don't think it's an issue with the beta -- the color server is a little flakey at times, I think that is all it is.  I wouldn't read anything else into it than that.

Open Aerials seems to be more reliable and in many cases is the exact same imagery, by the way.  I wouldn't try any uninstalling or restoring of maps.dat files.

I do really appreciate the feedback -- always good to hear when there are problems.

Beta Testing / Re: Beta 4.22 - map loading
« on: July 06, 2011, 05:55:00 PM »
Hmm, I think it may just be bad timing with some server issues.  What tiles are you trying to download?  I'm seeing only a few tiles load and then error message with the color aerial set.  But others seem to be OK to me.

Beta Testing / Re: Beta 4.21 - Land Ownership back!
« on: July 06, 2011, 03:44:22 PM »
Steve,

I spent a while testing this and couldn't figure anything out.  I did a batch download of BLM only tiles for an area, went through and reloaded a bunch of them, and they all seemed to stay with the full Land Ownership.

I'm not sure what to say on this one.  Probably just best to start a new tileset rather than massive reloading of tiles.

Thanks for the quality report / feedback, as always.

Definitely my fault!  There was something pretty dumb in there, introduced just a couple versions back - 4.11.

Fixed it in the current beta, 4.22, out now.

Beta Testing / Re: Beta 4.21 - Land Ownership back!
« on: June 27, 2011, 09:20:27 AM »
Steve,

There isn't currently a way to disable a particular tileset (not for WMS anyway).  I do think it makes sense for some servers, so it's a good candidate for a new feature.

Your tile reloading issues are still puzzling for sure.  I can't say I have tested mass reloading of tiles since the tool is really more designed for "spot" reloads, but I'm experimenting right now and I think I see what you are describing -- some tiles are getting reloaded, and some are not.  I'll see if I can figure it out, and for now I'd say don't reload any tiles, or just go with a new WMS server / tileset.

Thanks Steve.

Beta Testing / Re: Very slow 3D startup
« on: June 27, 2011, 09:12:48 AM »
Thanks guys.  So once the 3D image comes up it moves/rotates quickly, it's just slow to come up at first, right?  And while it is waiting it's just showing the hourglass and the original 2d map mode, right?

It does seem a bit slow to me when using higher "texture detail" settings -- especially at 4.0.  Then it's fast once it loads up.  I'll have a look at it, though not much has changed in the 3D code recently.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Trouble to dl maps with latest Pro demo
« on: June 24, 2011, 11:26:12 AM »
One thing to try is going back to default settings:

To reset back to default settings, delete (or rename) the file TopoFusion.ini.  It should be here:
C:\Documents and Settings\*Your USER NAME*\Local Settings\Application Data\TopoFusion\TopoFusion.ini

Or for older installs:

C:\Program Files\TopoFusion\TopoFusion.ini

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Trouble to dl maps with latest Pro demo
« on: June 24, 2011, 11:25:28 AM »
Hi,

That is very strange.  How are you running both TF basic and Pro on the same computer?  I can't account for such a difference in map downloading.  I was still going to guess firewall permissions (allowed for one TopoFusion.exe and not the other) but if you are installing/switching between Pro and Basic it should be the same exectuable in the same place.

So... unfortunately I am not sure what to suggest.  I can confirm that TF Pro is downloading maps, topo, aerial, myTopo etc, at least from my machine.

Anyone else having this problem?

Beta Testing / Re: Beta 4.21 - Land Ownership back!
« on: June 24, 2011, 08:33:09 AM »
If you replaced the old Land Ownership layer with the new string you'll get a mix of old and new ones.  You can start a fresh tileset by creating a new WMS server and going from there.

Your added comment is very strange though, yes!

Hmmmm.... clicking the reload maps tool on a tile will only invalidate that exact tile, which may uncover older downloaded tiles in the same position but same tileset.  Interesting.  I'll have to take a look at that, but for now I just recommend starting a new tileset -- the BLM only tiles are a bummer for sure.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Oregon 450
« on: June 24, 2011, 08:29:11 AM »
Part of it, I think, it simply the limitation of the Oregon's display, which is just a little faded to begin with.  Maps are more clear, for example, on the non touchscreen 62 series units.

What tileset are you uploading?

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Color Aerial 0.003 not downloading?
« on: June 22, 2011, 11:12:01 AM »
Those coordinates are in the ocean... so that might be the problem.  :)

Just joking.  I tried some downloading in Maine and such and it seemed to work ok.  I think that as you suspected they may have some throttling in place to prevent massive downloads.  TF should *not* floor the CPU or anything like that, though, but definitely no guarantees that you can download tiles forever from public servers.

You may try the new "open aerial" tilesets as an alternate.  In many cases they serve the exact same images as the Color tileset.

Hope that helps.

OK, next thing to try is some fresh settings, new topofusion.ini file.

Jeremy,

That last problem with the batch download is troubling.  I'll do some testing on that.

Can you give me a rough coordinate for where you are looking/downloading?  It must be area specific since all is working well for me in Colorado.

Thanks.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Openstreet Map Not downloading
« on: June 19, 2011, 04:14:43 PM »
Hmm, I will try to think what could be causing only those tilesets to not download.  It is very perplexing.

New map dir: Options->Preferences->Directory for Map Data.  Change to a new/fresh directory then restart TF.  See if you have any better luck downloading those tilesets, and let us know the result.

Thanks.

Let us know if it is behaving any better this morning -- it's looking good to me.

TopoFusion Anouncements / Re: Land Ownership Layer Back!

That worked, Steve, though I had to push out a new version to load tiles from an IP address.  Beta available now.  Details here:

Thanks again, that was a good find.  I am not sure how long this alternate server address will stay active, but it looks good for now!

Beta Testing / Beta 4.21 - Land Ownership back!
« on: June 17, 2011, 03:54:48 PM »
New beta out with a new server address for the Land Ownership layer that still has all the old data.

TF should rewrite your CustomWMS server entry for "Land Ownership" with the new IP address when you start.  But for reference, here is the info needed:

server: 206.16.47.174
request: wmsconnector/com.esri.wms.Esrimap/BLM_MAP_SURFACE_MGT_AGY?VERSION=1.1.1&SERVICE=WMS&REQUEST=GetMap&SRS=EPSG:4326&LAYERS=BLM+Lands,US+Forest+Service,FWS,DOD,BOR,BIA,National+Parks,BLM+National+Monuments,BLM+Wilderness+Areas,BLM+National+Conservation+Areas,OTHER,STATE,LOCAL&TRANSPARENT=FALSE&FORMAT=image/jpeg

(that last one needs to all be one line).

Beta available in the usual place.  Let us know how it goes!

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Openstreet Map Not downloading
« on: June 15, 2011, 06:34:44 PM »
Hey guys,

I am getting tiles on all of those tilesets downloading just fine, so the servers are OK.  A new map directory is a good idea to try, but not too likely the problem.

Firewall issue?  Only certain sites/IP's allowed?  Let's see, what else...

How about myTopo?  That's another new one that could be a clue as to what is going on.  All those new maps are similar in that they are in the same projection and using the same downloading code.

Feature Requests / Re: Consistent Scaling
« on: June 07, 2011, 08:11:27 PM »
1 - The only time the view should change is when you are flipping between mapsets in different projections.  Most of the newest ones are all in the same projection, so it should be the same.  The original topo set, however, is in a UTM projection, so it makes it very hard to keep the exact same view.

2 - Agreed, for sure.  I plan to do exactly what you said.  It is too cluttered and not useful.

3 - How so?  Oh, nevermind, yeah, a lot of stuff is missing there.

Thanks for the great feedback as always.

TopoFusion Basic / Re: Splitting a large track for upload

It's a smart simplify.  At 10k points you'll have plenty of detail to navigate the whole thing.

TopoFusion Basic / Re: Splitting a large track for upload
« on: June 04, 2011, 01:48:02 PM »
Hi,

The Colorado doesn't require splitting.  You just need to simplify the track into 10k points.  Either the Basic or Pro versions will work for that.

Let me know if you need any other help.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Track question
« on: June 02, 2011, 06:54:09 AM »
That's correct, I do not recommend using the "save track" button.  Just leave the data in your active log and download it from there.  Saved tracks lose time data.

540
TopoFusion Pro / Re: Track question
« on: June 01, 2011, 08:01:01 AM »
When you upload a track it won't change the statistics in your trip computer -- trip computer is only for logging tracks on the unit.

Also when you upload to the 'saved tracks' area you lose time data, and elevation is not used as well.  It's pretty much only for the coordinates, to follow on the map.

541
Awesome, thanks for the positive feedback!

Thx.

TopoFusion Anouncements / Land Ownership Layer Chopped
« on: May 24, 2011, 09:01:45 AM »
Unfortunately it seems that the BLM server where TopoFusion gets the "land ownership" layer has been reduced to only showing BLM boundaries.  See this notice:

http://www.blm.gov/nils/GeoComm/home_whatsnew.html

As of yesterday this is the new string that will work:

/wmsconnector/com.esri.wms.Esrimap/BLM_MAP_SURFACE_MGT_AGY?VERSION=1.1.1&SERVICE=WMS&REQUEST=GetMap&SRS=EPSG:4326&LAYERS=BLM+Lands,BLM+National+Monuments,BLM+Wilderness+Areas,BLM+National+Conservation+Areas&TRANSPARENT=FALSE&FORMAT=image/jpeg

As TF is currently set up you will get an error message, or just downloading tiles, when trying to use the layer.  To replace it with a new string go to Windows->WMS Custom Servers and select the Land Ownership layer.  Replace the "Request" string with the one above, then hit "Save Changes."

The forest, national park and other boundaries were removed, so it's only BLM.  I have been doing some looking to try to find a replacement or alternate, but have not been successful yet.  Will post anything here if I find it.  If you know of any WMS, google tile or other web map service that has similar data, please let us know!

Thanks and sorry about the inconvenience.

TopoFusion Anouncements / TopoFusion 4.2 released.
« on: May 18, 2011, 11:00:19 AM »

Mapquest maps

TopoFusion Pro has a new release, version 4.2, now available.  We've got some exciting new features, as the software continues to improve.  First we have two new map tilesets with global coverage -- Mapquest's street tiles based on Open Street Maps data and also the Open Aerial tileset.  Both are great additions to the software, offering a different (and faster) rendering of Open Street Maps data, and in some cases higher resolution color aerial data in the Open Aerial layer.

Also new is a SPOT replay interface.  This was produced in collaboration with trackleaders.com who are a leading provider of SPOT-based event and long trip tracking.  The new tool gives users access to trackleaders history of events, allowing historical and instant replays of races such as Tour Divide, the Yukon Quest and the Colorado Trail race.  There are also tools for following events live in TopoFusion.

As always, we've been adding little buttons and tricks here or there, often from user request.  For full details on those, check the revision history linked below.

Head over to the Download Page to try TopoFusion out, free of charge.

Registered users refer to your registration email for the download link, or go here to request your code and the download URL.

Sure.  I'm adding "Y" for Open Cycle... and...  we are running out of letters, so 'Q' for Open Aerial.

Glad you find them useful. Curious - do you find them better resolution/quality than the 'color' tileset?  Or just that they load faster?

550
John,

Would love to.  Send it on over to smorris@topofusion.com if you don't mind.

I think you have a good handle on what we're looking for in the loop -- good trail and pretty much as possible without making things seem "out of the way" or illogical (we like pure loops).
