Archived Support / Trackpoint date changes in network

You are indeed correct, no time data is associated with the saved track. I must have been looking at it before saving.

You are also correct in that it doesn't make sense to have the timestamp in the network especially the one I sent you, an up and back.

Archived Support / Understanding TF File Management

One other thing about file and data management. Thirty years ago when it was called Data Processing I learned rather quickly to manage a piece of data once and only once. (The system had 16K bytes organized into 8K of 16-bit words of memory. We had hard disk cartridges with 500K of storage. The K is NOT a misprint.)

It was also prudent to have one and only one copy of a datapoint for accuracy. This is still true, imho.

I'm building sets of stuff for POIs and routes and really need to keep it organized into fewer files, each with discrete tracks.

Fusion is a great tool for lots of things, I encourage you to continue to "think about" how the files are managed and tracks are organized.

Archived Support / Trackpoint date changes in network

I went for a ride on Sunday. (Yeah, I know, congratulations.) Same route up and back down. Created some trackpoints on eTrex Legend and imported to PC.

I modified the elevations with DEM data and saved the file:
http://ebizmax.com/biking....ion.gpx
The trackpoints still have valid, accurate dates at this point.

I used the above file and created a network:
http://ebizmax.com/biking/gambrill/sourcenotes/GambrillNetwork.gpx
Dates on the trackpoints are now mixed some seem ok and others are clearly bogus, like 1977. I have seen this before but don't recall specifics, seems like the dates were 1900 which makes some sense given the history of date coding by MS.

Is this expected? Why?

Archived Support / DEM Accuracy
« on: November 12, 2007, 02:44:20 PM »
I did some reading on DEM to try to understand the data a little better. (Or, I tried to, I have a headache now.)

I saw accuracy numbers ranging from 4M to 50M. How accurate are the TF numbers? Do the numbers refer to the elevation or the linear spacing or both?

How granular is the DEM information? For example, I'm looking at a topo with 66ft contour lines (which I assume is converted from 20M), what is the DEM grid for this map? Am I even asking the right question?

Can somebody give the the 25-word version of DEM as applied to tracks?

Archived Support / Track Profile Smoothing
« on: November 12, 2007, 02:35:42 PM »
I know that I can add DEM information to a track to improve (?) the profile. I thought I saw someplace that I could "smooth" the profile. Did I make that up? Or, am I thinking of ExpertGPS?

Archived Support / Files, Tracks and Track Segments
« on: November 11, 2007, 04:32:53 PM »
I started using Mapping software like MapSource, ExpertGPS, and GeePeeEx to organize my POIs. I wanted them organized by region and activity (I bike and kayak). Of course, as I got into this software I found more and more stuff I could do with it, especially after buying the second GPS that tracked elevations.

So, I have this file with two tracks on it representing two bike rides. When I open the file with TF I get all this useful info like climbing elevation, uphill and downhill time, grades, and more... But this is ONLY useful IF there is only one track per file.

I don't know how the rest of the TF community feels about it (you could do a poll in the forum to find out) but I would find TF more useful if the panel at the bottom, currently used for folder tree, file list, and log data, were reorganized a bit. My suggestion:
* Use the normal common dialog to open and close files, eliminating the folder tree.
* Similarly eliminate the file list.
* Use the expanded space available to list one track per line from the open file(s).

I understand that this is a major shift in the way TF manages files. Perhaps an alternative approach is an optional panel that looks like the log but lists one line per track. The log area can already be minimized so screen real estate should not really be an issue.

You could also limit the tracklog display to 3 in the demo version.

Just tried opening with Context Menu and got the same results:
"Test_F~1" Moreover, also got a version of the file with the proper name: ""Test_FR1350.gpx""

Probably something to do with the command line.

In general, I'm using the OpenWith>> context menu to open files. Usually TF is not already open and I know what file I want to open so I find it in Win Expl and open with the context menu.

You are right tho... If TF is open and I use File/Open to open a file I only get one and it does not have the tilde~.

Hope this helps... Bob

As I futz around with this I'm beginning to see my problem. I'm used to seeing file management using the File Open dialog box with Comdlg32.dll. TF does its own brand of file management which will require some adjustment on my part.

I guess one problem I'm having is that "Test_FR1350.gpx" shows up as "Test_F~1" and if I have a bunch of files that start like that...

Still a great piece of software. I just need to learn how to use it.

What do you mean that nothing happens when you do a "save as.." ?

No dialog comes up, or it doesn't save it where you ask it to save it, or?

No dialog comes up. Of course I can't reproduce it now. but it may have happened as you say.

I guess one of the things that is confusing me is that when I open one file three show up in the "log" area. How can I open just one file?

Another thing is that there is a box, second from the left, with file names in it, what is that?

Finally, I'm terrified of any button that says "Remove". This implies to me that the file will be removed as in deleted from the system.

I really did go thru the help doc and have spent some time in this forum to try to educate myself. I get the sense that TF approaches file management a bit differently and if there is something somewhere that will explain that please point me to it.

This is not the first time I've been confused about something. And it surely will not be the last.

thanks.... Bob

I'm new to TopoFusion but not to the windows file system and not to GPS data. I've used MapSource and ExpertGPS a bit. I'm not an expert on either.

I'm baffled by the TF file management. I can't tell what I'm looking at. I finally found the file path info on the far right of the log entry. Sometimes when I "Save As" nothing happens. I have found files in the TF directory: C:\Program Files\TopoFusion

Is there a help topic somewhere that explains this? I've read quite a bit of the help and quite a few topics on this forum but I'm feeling stupid.

Finally, this is a great program. I only have the demo at the moment but will probably buy eventually. It does a LOT of stuff that I want to do when I can figure out how to do it.

Thanks... Bob

Archived Support / TF Pro 3.12 - How do I get elevations to show??

Another thing we can do right now is give a right click option to simply request the elevation at a point clicked on it.  I'd like to see this feature in the interim, and will add it "todo."

One of the things that I want to be able to do is edit elevation data. Let's say I have a trackpoint with Lat/Lon/Elev and I am displaying the profile. I'd like to select that trackpoint and delete it in the profile view because that's where I can see the problem.
