Archived Support / Question on New download method?
« on: July 08, 2007, 02:50:29 PM »
No but it goes through the slow process of ACTING like it downloading, in other words taking time to count them or something which increases the time, They should Zip by Fast on the number of tiles needing download instead of checking the server for tiles that already exist.

Basically its like the software is checking the tiles your already have which takes time when dealing with thousands of them, when ALL of them are already downloaded it shouldnt take but a couple minutes for the software to know that. Try it yourself. take a section that you KNOW you have all the tiles then use the tool to download and draw a box then let it download, if you look, even though its not technically downloading the tiles again it goes through the slow process as if it needs to download them. Same time as if you didnt have them downloaded already.

Its easy to check and makes doing extra sections a pain as you can never be sure what the program is downloading and what is just Wasted time on tiles already done.

Did you have a reason why TF is downloading tiles already downloaded? I was testing this out and it was going through the lengthy proceedure of downloading them again, or atleast taking the length as if it was. Is there some way to make them bypass the tiles downloaded already and go straight for ANY tiles NOT downloaded already? It would be faster when trying to add to existing map sections since as you know Terrasever can hang on long downloads. I get about only 560k download speeds. Bypassing the existing Tiles in the download box will save me hours, software should know already not even to count the tiles that are downloaded.

That would be nice, BTW On google I noticed they have a cache to disk which can go to 2gb which is what I spoke of, I dont think it overwrites until it reaches it limit, but their compression isnt bad. I test it by removing internet access and then loading google and see what it caches, it seems to cache all that you look at, but I was just wondering if there was a way to import their Dat file. lol

Something else I noticed When wanting to download more areas I noticed that the areas I already have saved seemed to be added to the download tiles. So I get the 1679475 etc instead of less since I Already downloaded the tiles, does the program try to redownload existing tiles? I know its not suppose to but I am wondering if it is? I did some tests on sections I know I have all tiles on and yet there was a slow process or downloading that shouldnt even be?

I also found that both of the USB units I tested did COM4 if that helps and I believe both are 4800baud. I really recommend this type of GPS if you need to be mobile and use Topofusion. The GPS above works wonderful and the Price is great, I tried to move everywhere to get performance loss and its on the level of my Etrex model.

Hello,

First off thanks again Scott for the fix on your newest software. I replaced that Piece of junk that you tested to fix the USB GPS thing, and got this GPS GlobalSat BU 353 USB GPS Laptop Receiver SIRF III.

I got it on EBAY and WOW its wonderful its connected in seconds it works 100% as good is not better than my garmin! It has a magnetic mount for the top of cars, and has a nice length cable. I just wanted to let other TF users know to Stay clear of the other Cheap versions you see on EBAY they dont work and they default to CHina. lol

This one is made in Europe and is MUCH cheaper than Garmin and other USB GPS systems on the market, it has GREAT reviews and I can see why. You can pick it up on Ebay for about $60 w/S&H like I did and you wont regret it. I add Velcro to mine so it stays attached to my CF-28 laptop since mine didnt have the Built in GPS. lol My luck. I hear the CF-30 all come with built in GPS now.

Anyway here is the Guy I cought from he has the best price, plus fast shipping etc. I have no idea what other FT users use their stuff for, but I have to travel light or in truck and this thing works great for both, It worked inside the House in Seconds. I was really impressed with it for the price.

Hello Kurt,

I was thinking about adding to my map file through Nasa's server but you added that new format to the new version, can I download and add to my dat files or am I going to have to redownload everything to add more content?

Also this new format has nothing to do with the DEMS right? So those should work in TF with or without the new format for image maps?

I only get about 500k download speed which isnt bad but its not as nice as the 2mb crowd so downloading these maps for the area I need takes Days.

Another question is how much space is saved with the new format? Lets say I Have 10GB of data what would the new download format be? 5gb?

I'm tempted to redownload everything but its a BUG process for me since I AM cover Millions of Acres for work. I also found out Google Caches so I have been using thier free software as a more up to date lookup and your software and my main GPS map tracking. I wished you could take this Cache files at import them into Topofusion. lol They got a great compression rate.

Feature Requests / Problem with GPS reciever and Topo Software
« on: May 12, 2007, 03:19:33 PM »
Hi,

Well I TRIED your setting and it Crashes to desktop. I tried 1200,4800,9600 baud. All of them do the same. I would probably be better off just Mailing the unit to you, unless you wanted to get one for yourself?

My logic on this is 1. Small Portable, 2. Can stay connected on Laptop while hiking, 3. Backup incase one went down I have another, 4. Batteries it uses the Laptop power system, 5. The cost $30 is just too good to have another GPS.

Let me know. if you want me to send it just let me know where to.

Feature Requests / Problem with GPS reciever and Topo Software
« on: May 12, 2007, 01:41:48 PM »
Hi,

I just bought one of those Small USB GPS recievers for my Laptop as I could use the portability of the unit. My problem is Topo is not recognizing it. I did Install the Drivers for the Small Unit. Here is a Link to the Item I got on EBay, it is new not used.

What it did was add another Comport #4 In TF It doesnt give me an error when I use Garmin Serial on #4COM but it doesnt show long or Lat, I know the GPS is working as the Light is blinking connectivity. Its like TF doesnt know how to communicate with it? If I Select Magellan I get the same response. If I select the other 2 options Garmin USB or Old Magellan I get an Error about connectivity. Is this something that is fixed in the New beta?

I am willing to Send the Drivers or the Whole GPS unit to you to add. Its one of those Small Units that is perfect for portability.

I am using the 3.0 version

Beta Testing / V3.03 - Texture compression
« on: April 08, 2007, 10:48:19 PM »
I was going to say the Bottom one is the compressed one?

Anyway its just a pain to remember to turn off the compression, sometimes adding new things isnt always good if it has side effects. I have no intent on downloading all those tiles again, it took forever, NASA's server stink!

Are there any serious problems in 3.0 that I should know about? Because that version seems to be the best for my needs, if there is a bug that I will never come across, because I do not use the feature then I should have nothing to worry about on using the older version.

Ok so what are you saying all the Downloaded Files I have already on my laptop will be Slower to load now? Because it took me days to get my many Gigabytes worth of data in my map files. I also converted over the 3D landscape using the converter which was a while back. I wouldnt want to load a new version that slows my performance on my existing download tiles when loading.

You mentioned a converter would it convert the files we already have in there dat formats?

Beta Testing / Maybe a small new feature on the new beta?
« on: April 04, 2007, 04:01:44 AM »
I need them when I have to reload topo or redo the system, I have to Redownload, I may not have access for a month or more in the field. Therefore "IF" something happened and I had to do a reinstall I would have to have internet to connect. Its a small thing I noticed which helps because I already downloaded once, should have to do over and over just cause of a reinstall.

Thanks for adding it helps. :-)

Hi,

I was looking at the 3.03 build and I was thinking the GIS Layers still isnt fixed. We should be able to point to the Downloads on our hardrive, right now its grayed out and will only allow us to download from the net again. I figure one download is enough and should be able to be pointed to, True?

Just a Small thought. BTW I tested oout my photos on the new build and they still work. lol ;-) Just making sure..... ':p'

Gack! Who would want to use MS' new OS, It seems each time they release a new version they keep adding more Secret JUNK and hoops to jump through, I WOULDnt be surprised if they can hack into your system and track everything you do. MS is not a trust worthy company and BILL is power hungry.

« on: February 05, 2007, 04:12:13 AM »
Well if you can covnert to gpx that would be neat, as of now I can transfer the user maps saved from my home PC to the Laptop, I have to add them direct to the laptop which with the GPX files I dont the info is all saved, see what I mean? User maps added the way now have to be calibrated etc but when done if you go to tranfer to another PC its lost. Am I wrong? I havent tried it but it seems to be the case since its not a file but a loaded image.

I'll try the new beta. is the user map bug fixed also?

Beta Testing / Crashes with User Maps
« on: February 04, 2007, 12:26:30 AM »
Ah I did Have the toggle off on both Machines and it was on at first on my home PC then I DISABLED because I DIDNT NEED. I checked it out on the Home PC and that worked. lol Thanks goodness it was a little glitch! See I have the download off on my laptop since its a field laptop with no Internet connected out there.

Also I didnt have MANY GPXs loaded that makes sense, then when testing I removed all the GPX files and the error showed up .lol

I can wait to test the new version, did you find out HOW many GPX's needed to be loaded for it to calibrate?

P.S. just checked out on the HOME PC and it calibrates when I load afew GPX files. lol

Well I FEEL good as I found a bug that was useful to get fixed, who knows how many may have done the same thing and had the bugs. I leave the GPX's OFF when I dont use them to speed up laptop performance.

Great news now all my work isnt wasted and I can now play with user maps.

Is it possible to make User maps like GPX files so we can add compelte maps and remove them? its much more difficult to manually go into the user map menu to add or remove maps. I was thinking because of Speed since someone said he had 8 user maps and his Laptop was slower because of it.

« on: February 03, 2007, 06:49:17 PM »
Thats GREAT news! Do you speak of the user maps right? The exiting is the usermap box and then I have to go back into it to calibrate, the calibrate buttons are grayed if I dont exit and enter again.

I hope you fix the Photo Waypoint issue and thats one I need for update info, though User maps are nice they may slow the laptop down too much. Dont know yet.

Maybe user maps can be loaded like Gpx file? so its easier to add and remove?

Beta Testing / Crashes with User Maps
« on: February 03, 2007, 12:33:16 AM »
Ok I REinstalled directX9C full and still doesnt work so DirectX corruption isnt the case. I also tried just going to the Points tool to calibrate and same error.

I dont mind reinstalling as I do it every 2-3 months anyway as I LIKE a clean system, but that still wont solve whats causing it even if that works. In theory it would just happen again as my Laptop using an Image to reinstall. So it would be the same just before the crash and would happen all over again.

If you can you can pick up a CF-28 for about $250 with a HD to test, they have an excellent resale value. The Lack of photos is more important than the calibration crashes. Also I think the calibration is bugged anyway as like I said you have to exect the window and go back in to manually calibrate and sometimes the map can uncheck which is wierd. That was before I experienced the crashes.

I guess on the photos I am having the SAME problem your other users had except its doing it on my High end system which is WIERD, I could see the laptop and it didnt work from day one on seeing the photo waypoints but DID work on my Home PC and now if not visible. I really hope your program doesnt overwrite windows files and that would be dangerous. The version because the addition of the photos I never had issues with except that Wierd Error we all got.

Trust me I am not only blaiming the software, its just that I would think it leans more on the software and a capability issue than with 2 different systems being corrupted when the laptop hasnt been used for a long while and has a clean install.

Beta Testing / Crashes with User Maps
« on: February 03, 2007, 12:21:20 AM »
I doubt its the system, atleast not on the desktop, laptop is an older system so I am open. How I add a user map is simple I got to windows, the user map library, then click add user map. It then shows in the tray/box I then exist it because it will NOT allow me to calibrate even BEFORE the crashes without doing this as the usermap will just disappear or uncheck if I try to calibrate without first exiting. I think this problem was mentioned by another. I then enter again and click calibrate Manually. I then touch any of the Green or Red points on the corners or Middle and try to drag it crashes.

On the Photos they just dont show anymore. Is it possible that Photofusion can corrupt a .dll for the directX, its Odd as I said I also play Games from Time to time and they require MUCH more graphics than Topofusion. lol I play old and new games on my desktop when I have time.

I have tried user maps and adding photos with all the buttons unchecked except view status to see the map.

Whats odd is it worked before on dragging and now doesnt, which makes me wonder if it corrupts something using the directX, funny though it did it with Both Systems and they use Different License and the laptop doesnt have the newer XP updates.

Also I dont have GE loaded on the laptop only my main system so when know that they are not the cause of the corruption if there is any. Also I havent loaded any software as of late during this wierd behavior, like I said only the Topofusion is having the issue.

Nope doesnt Work I removed the .ini file and still have the Crash on user maps and no Pictures for the waypoints. Somthing that isnt in the settings but in the code. Could there be a mistake of glitch with Directx somehow?

All I know is I have 2 systems that are different like Night and Day and it doesnt work on either of them, thats almost impossible unless something is amiss in the software.

I would highly recommend NOT releasing this until its resolved or you could find many suffering the same problem. I work on PC's for a living, there is no way 2 different PC's would get the same results when they are SO different. I may not be into coding but I know hardware. If they used the same Drivers, or same chipset yes, but being different drivers, chipsets, CPUs and Ram as well as platforms........

The only thing in common is the DirectX9C full version and Both are XP Pro with SP2 but one has all the MS updates and the laptop doesnt.

Maybe you should pick up a CF-28 on Ebay for testing then sell it later when done with the software. lol I'm sure it would do the sane, Like I said it worked a while I wonder if some of the people it worked for now tried it a few times to find out if it STILL works.

Reason is it worked a while for me also then quit, but I did alot more than 8 photos so a tick might have been triggered? I cant be the only one, somebody just hasnt tested the feature enough yet to have the same thing happen. I know I went for MONTHS without using your photo feature until now.

« on: February 01, 2007, 09:34:37 AM »
I tried everything on my end, I tired adding removing new photos everythign I could think of to add the ability again, but it seems to be gone now. What shocked me is when it done in on my Home PC as it WAS working and now its not. Really wierd because I made complete photo waypoints on the home PC but now I can make any because I GET just icons.

I love your software and hope this gets resolved as its a very useful feature, usermaps may be too much because of the slow down I heard others get, but the photo waypoints would be a great addition in helping me.

Any Idea why it would work a few times and then stop and not work again?

Yes a Geforce 7800GS for my Home PC and a Intel Onboard for my CF-28, I was just stating that if this isnt fixed not even the newer CF-29's will work either. I think it must be video card related but since both are different chipsets and different drivers....... Maybe its more ATI friendly I know alot of your users seem to use ATI or have ATI VC laptops. The fix you did must have not really fixed the issue, hope you can fix it. '<img'>

standard jpegs, maybe all those 20 PCs have something in common? like all ATI cards or something? It hard to believe I have the only 2 computers that cause this issue and the 2 I have a light years apart. lol

Its interesting how it worked a few times on the User maps and then quit working. And the same for the photo waypoints, except it never worked for the laptop.

Maybe the Geforce and Intel chipsets have issues with some code? I doubt Processor or RAM have anything to do with it. Then there is WindowsXP Pro with SP2 maybe the 20 plus PCs are non XP systems. There must be a reason its not random for sure.

Well, now I can add or See photos on my Home PC of Topofusion.

There is absolutely a Bug somewhere in the software. There are too many differences between both PCs to have the SAME problems. I also tried adding just one seeing if somehow my gpx file is corrupt and it will not Show the photo. Turn off shows the text turn on Shows the icon but No photo.

I think the two problems are related somehow, but that is just my opinion. Could it be an issue with DirectX? I have the Full version needed as you suggested. I am going to uninstall Topofusion and reinstall on MY PC and see what happens, it may be a bug where once it corrupts thats it.

Anyway I thought you would like to know, I wonder how many around here are really testing this software out for you? lol

What type of system are you using for the program? I have an Intel onboard card with 8mb. The CF-28,29 almost use the same VC because its a military Law enforcement Laptop and Games arent so needed. lol  So even though I have a cf-28 and 29 would have the same problem. Only different is P3 and the 29 is P4.

Beta Testing / Crashes with User Maps
« on: February 01, 2007, 02:14:50 AM »
Any progress finding out why this crash may be happening? I am willing to test possible fixes for you. Right now adding user maps and trying to calibrate cause that MS error and crashes topofusion. My home PC is a 3.6ghz P4 with 2gb pc3200 Ram, 7800gs Video card etc etc etc. lol

My Laptop is a CF-28 1ghz P3, Intel Onboard Vid 8mb, 768mb Ram pc133. The only Same thing between BOTH laptops is WindowsXp Pro SP2 and Both are using the updated Directx9C full installs you recommended.

I am surprised no one else is having this issue? Maybe most arent using the feature yet? It worked fine on both systems about 2-3 times, then after that it doesnt work. All I can think to do is remove topofusion all together and try again, but I fear after a few time it will happen again. All my Drivers are up to date and like I said this is on 2 different systems.

Now on the photos for waypoints they show up fine for my Home PC but my Laptop they dont. I really do need this one fixed as I need the newer Google Maps for changes. DOES terraserver EVER update their info, I mean I cannot figure out WHY they havent updated the information, the data has to be out there?

ok I tested again and same Log file except at the end it says

Directx shutdown, resources freed. Frames = 60

Here are the photos of the picture with the button unclicked and then clicked. I also waited a while and you can see it was a new photo I added and only one, except no photo showing.

The Third photo is showing the photo added as a user map transparent.

Also I included the error message I get with now BOTH my laptop and Home PC with 3.0beta on Adjusting User MAPS. You can see the picture of the error and how it ask to send.

Since its doing on both PCs I would say something is bugged with calibrating the user maps.

I'll do it again, but YES it was turned on and off MANY times. Like I said the feature doesnt work on any of the newer versions including 3.0. I can add user maps photos, but adding my waypoint photos show nothing, I do get Names if I turn the button off and when I turn it on I get nothing but the photo icons.

I'll post the log file again, like I said I had NO ERROR or Error logs. just doesnt work.

It worked for 2-3 times and then stopped working I tried reinstall of the software but no go. I have a nice home system with no issues. I am a network engineer by trade.

Everything was working fine, but now I get Crashes adding User maps. It happens after I add them and then try to resize etc. I get an error message and it Emails you the error log.

Hope this helps. This is on my Home PC and not my laptop, I havent tested this feature enough on my laptop due to my other issue with photo's.

P.S. A rotational option for adding user maps would be nice also, so if a photo we have isnt perfectly lined up we can rotate it to match the terraserver stuff.

Nice feature, but the crash has stopped me in my tracks of playing with it.

Ok I added a user map with NO issues showed up fine and was transparent. But Still no Photos. I tried doing only 1 Photo to add, using the waypoint method which I guess is photofusion? Didnt work still no Photo showing up. But I can add user custom photo maps, just no photos through the normal waypoint way.

doubt its a driver issue since I can add photos as user maps. I also am using the Latest Drivers for my VC for this Laptop and also using the directx9C that was required for the other other version.

I get NO error message just the little photo icons without the photos showing up, There is nothing to click to activate them like it should. There must be a glitch somewhere in the software since I can add User Map photos and it shows up opaque or Transparent. Whats your take on all this, as I would rather use the photo feature, the user maps are nice but hard to calibrate atleast using Google pics. lol

Beta Testing / Problem with User Images on CF-28 Laptop
« on: January 29, 2007, 09:41:36 PM »
Hello,

I decided to add the images to my laptop which I did on my PC and found that on my CF-28 that I cannot see the Images. The photo icon shows whether I click on the photo tab or not and when I do it says photos on but No images like on my home PC.

I also tested this on the 3.0 Beta and it doesnt work, I was using the 83 version before. I think this needs to be fixed as right now the Photo feature doesnt work on the CF-28 1ghz laptops with Intel VC.

This is the first time I was able to test the photos on my laptop, they show fine on the PC, I even tried to manual add them to the laptop from the laptop and they just will not show the image in overlay, plus when you click on them it doesnt bring up the photo.

HELP. lol I use Google Photos to show areas that are cut down by the logging. since the BW photos are really out of date.

I can wait. lol But if you can add the data for this that would be great, I think they also had Nez Pierce forests etc. I would think all the Park sites would habe there own data?

BTW the extension was .eoo? I think either that or .00e really wierd but 90mb.

Beta Testing / TopoFusion Direct3D - 2.98
« on: November 02, 2006, 07:42:48 PM »
Well it works on my Intel setup so I am happy. And the program is faster than alot of the big name ones out there. My only gripe right now is Easier setup to add Photos (which is being worked on) and Forest Info on Campground Names, moutain peaks etc. WW has to be getting that data somewhere? I checks that USGS site and couldnt find the info, so it must be from a different site?

I see. I seen it in another program also thats a small program but it showed the forest names. I will look at that site you gave and see if I see something that may be it, but.... Do you think WW would be kind enough to tell you?

Haroow, Tell him what type of latop. it may not work on real old ones or maybe certain thrid party cards?

That fixed the issue with the ocx error. :-))

But...

I tried to add a photo using the waypoints, but I seen no option for adding? Only URL? I was looking forward to something like adding Jpg files, so I can specify where on the HD they are. I do see the toggle for Photos, but no option to add them in the waypoints?

Also Any ETA on the forest name info being added? Not sure how hard that might be?

Awsome Glad I mentioned it, and GLAD tdcarter RESPONDED ;-)

Krein could you add real fast before the Release that Forest Data GIS? Or is that a hard Process to add as an option for download?

Thanks

grant

P.S. I was surprised How easy it was to convert the DEMS, I think I may add that Info the the PDF, I may polish it up if you want. It would help new people on the DEMS, its not really hard to convert but I had to look for instructions on the web for that Program, IMO its easier to use than the GeoViewer, It never worked right so I couldnt zoom in on anything.

If this helps My laptop Uses INTEL 82830M Video card. Maybe the Error is related to Intel Cards? I loaded XP on the laptop instead of Win2000, in the attempt to see if that made a difference it did not. I still Get that Error when I try to use the Beta.
