TopoFusion Pro / Re: Climbing Elevation
« on: September 02, 2019, 09:05:44 AM »

There are a few things that could be happening, none of which are common.

I'd take a look at the file in the "Climbing Analysis" dialog.  There you can get the straight climbing numbers without either of the two filters that are normally applied:

1 - box filter.  This smooths out fluctuations in the elevation recordings, which is much less accurate than lat/lon on every GPS system.
2 - moving time filter.  It's possible your file has some goofy time data or that the threshold for what is considered a moving speed is too high or too low.  This filters out elevation gain that can be accumulated when your GPS isn't actually going anywhere.

Looking at your file if you strip the timestamps from it you get 6,369 ft of climbing, which is perhaps too high?  Maybe not.  I would suggest going to file->preferences->units and changing "moving time" down to 0.1 mph, so that anything higher than that is counted as moving.

Hope that helps a little.  Feel free to ask more questions.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Double Window when opening TopoFusion
« on: May 07, 2019, 10:18:58 AM »
Thanks, I think I have been able to reproduce.  It's a bug that only happens when zoomed to see most of the world.  Try zooming in just a little bit before maximizing.  That should get you around it while we fix it for the next version.

Do let me know if not.  Thanks!

Beta Testing / Worldwind shutting down May 3 -- get v5.55
« on: May 01, 2019, 09:47:01 AM »
One of the key servers TopoFusion uses is going to shut down May 3, 2019.

After many years of service, it is sad to see Worldwind go.  It was a great project and one
we all benefited from.

All previous versions of TF will not be able to download Elevation data and Landsat tiles
starting on the 3rd (or 4th?).  This version restores access using different servers.

Please note that starting with this version all elevation data downloaded from
Worldwind servers will not be accessible -- new data will be downloaded
from the new server.

Version 5.55 Beta is now available.
Download it using your registration name and code at:

http://www.topofusion.com/beta.php

Questions?  Thanks!

Feature Requests / Re: Some ideas
« on: March 21, 2019, 10:03:31 AM »

Thanks Jeff, for following up and for buying a copy.  It's always great to hear the various uses folks have for the software.

Watermarking is an interesting idea.  Seems like taking one of the location fields and maybe a couple others for PhotoFusion waypoints does make some sense.  Others may find that useful too.  You can change which waypoint field is displayed on the map in TF (so instead of file name it could be the description or comment field).

For now naming the files as you want them is a good idea, too.

Let us know if you have any other feedback.

Thanks

Feature Requests / Re: Some ideas
« on: March 19, 2019, 08:46:27 AM »
Hi Jeff,

I like the idea of including some meta data in PhotoFusion imports.  What field(s) would you like to see?  I guess it could be a dropdown of a few major ones (there are many!), perhaps.  A couple fields could go into the description or comment field on each waypoint.

On the second point, it sounds like general map export is what you are looking for.  Let me know if not.

Thanks for writing in,

Scott

TopoFusion Pro / Re: downloading from a garmin device
« on: January 16, 2019, 06:00:58 PM »

Hi Joe,

TopoFusion supports any of the newer Garmin devices that still plug in via USB.  Most of the new watches do not, though -- it's all ANT+ or Bluetooth.

Luckily it is easy to get a GPX file from Garmin's stuff, then plop that over to TF.  That's what I'd recommend.

Cheers

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Splitting file into separate tracks
« on: November 11, 2018, 10:24:00 AM »

Thanks, glad you like it.  It sometimes takes more than one tool to get a (more) complex job done.

There's no road or vector mapping in TF, so that is one thing it lacks.

It does sound like maybe keeping all your legs in one file but as separate tracks may be the way to go.  You can still profile them and do a bunch of other operations based on each track.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Splitting file into separate tracks
« on: November 09, 2018, 03:22:41 PM »
Hi,

Welcome.  Let's see if I can help.

So the goal is to open one file, cut it in different places and then export each individual track into separate files?

The first part is easy with the scissors tool.  To save each out individually pretty much requires the merge tool.  Click on each then 'save as...'.

It wouldn't be too hard to write code to save out each track as an increasing numbered sequence (1.gpx, 2.gpx, etc).  But I'd like to understand the background for what you're doing, if you care to share.

Cheers

Beta Testing / 5.54 - Land Ownership
« on: November 05, 2018, 01:22:46 PM »

I am excited to have a viable and public source of Land Ownership data in the USA -- the new Land Ownership layer in TF provides BLM/USFS/NPS/State/Local/Private designations.

I have yet to find a good legend, but chances are if you are interested in this layer you can figure out what the colors mean.  Or if you know your local area well.

If you use the 'Blend' option in the Map menu it will use combo blending to show you land ownership overlayed on whatever map type you are currently looking at.  Nifty.  Or find it in the tileset dropdown in the upper right to go direct to it.

Fixed a number of other servers, including an update to Elevation that was a little tricky.

Beta 5.54 is in the usual place.  Cheers!

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Rollback to TF v5.43
« on: November 05, 2018, 01:15:35 PM »

Finally took a look at this and believe found the issue.  The checkboxes in Options should work now in Beta 5.54.

You may need to restart after enabling some of them, but then they should be accessible.

Hope it's useful even if the most recent deadline passed.

Cheers

Yes, you can reverse and save out a track by using the join tool:

1 - click on the track in join tool mode
2 - right click and reverse
3 - right click and save as...

now be sure to disable or remove the old track that was going the other direction or you won't be sure which you are clicking on.

One more tip for joining is to disable every track in your active file list *Except* for the bare minimum of the tracks/files you need.  It's possible you have some other tracks in the area (of the same trails) you are clicking on.

That is odd that right click isn't working for you that often!  So no context menu pops up?  Are you sure no key on the keyboard is being held down?

67

I could use a little hair as mine is thinning!  ;)

A tutorial on this is long overdue from me.  But a few key points:

1 - make sure all tracks you are joining are one way only (that they don't go out/back).  if they are, snip the ends until you only have one way.
2 - make sure all tracks are snipped at the join points
3 - choose a direction you want the track to end up in (yes, it must go one way or the other)
4 - click on the first track and use the profile tool (drag the mouse along the profile) to make sure it is traveling in the direction it needs to be.  if not, reverse it.
5 - now click on the tracks in order

The key to success is to make sure everything it set up properly before you start joining, especially the direction of the first track.

Hope that helps some!

This is what I've got...

>MapQuestKey=n5UdJGzAKtvb1svOBx2WTSUimChlGYrm
>UseMSRMaps=1
>[Position]

That looks correct.  Do you get "Topo" and "Aerial" as a choice in the dropdown in the upper right of the main window?  I get those but I do see that it switches back to Landsat.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Rollback to TF v5.43
« on: September 17, 2018, 06:31:51 PM »
Hmm, I can think of any way the setting would get clobbered, but it's possible.

Is UseMSRMaps=1 under the correct section of the .INI file, which is just the general [Settings] but before any other bracketed sections?

I get the old tilesets with that in my .INI file so I can confirm it works on my machine at least.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: 5.51 Pro not rendering tiles square
« on: September 09, 2018, 08:16:50 AM »

Hi,

Thanks for the post -- this is not a new issue in TF, unfortunately.  The tiles are in a different projection than in most online map viewers (e.g. OSM and google maps).  It's an artifact of TF pre-dating all of the TMS and google map technology.

It's on the list to switch to a Mercator based projection (the same as google maps) but it's a significant development project, so I don't have plans to get to it any time soon.

I find the maps usable as long as you're not looking at extreme latitudes.  In AK the effect is pronounced.  In the lower 48 not so much.

Cheers

Internal would be much better, if you've got it!

I still plan to look at the windows API for current position.  A lot of times WiFi will have a rough idea of where it is which is useful, too.

Haven't got to it yet.  Thanks for the post and nudge.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: DEM CD's
« on: August 05, 2018, 05:26:40 PM »

Go to Options->General->DEM Directory and point it to one of your CDs and one of the directories where all the DEM files are.

Then restart TF and see if you have elevation data in an area you know is covered.  It might make startup of TF a little slower.

76
TopoFusion Pro / Re: DEM CD's
« on: August 05, 2018, 04:58:09 PM »

It's been a while since I've used actual DEM files but I believe the .DEM format should be read correctly.  Give it a try.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Is DEM server down?
« on: August 05, 2018, 04:56:29 PM »
Hi guys - For some reason, DEMs are not downloading.  I have 5.48 and cannot see elevation.   Maybe I have the settings wrong?

DEM server and landsat are both out in v5.48 and earlier.  There is a beta v5.5 out with the fixes, and a full release is coming in the next 24 hours.

78
TopoFusion Pro / Re: DEM CD's
« on: August 05, 2018, 03:38:21 PM »
If they are in the older DEM format you should be able to use one CD at a time by directing TF to use the drive as the DEM directory.

If it works with one CD you could always copy them all into one directory on your Hard Drive to do all at the same time.

Let me know if it works!

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Rollback to TF v5.43
« on: July 09, 2018, 09:04:21 AM »

Ah, I see -- sorry I misunderstood.

To turn access to the older Terraserver/MSRmaps tiles (if you've got 'em!) you need to find your TopoFusion.ini file.  Default is:

C:\Users\Scott\AppData\Local\TopoFusion\TopoFusion.ini

and look for

UseMSRMaps=0

set it to

UseMSRMaps=1

Then they should be accessible.  Let me know if you have any issues!

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Rollback to TF v5.43
« on: July 02, 2018, 12:39:39 PM »

Hi there,

Unfortunately rolling back to 5.43 won't help in gaining access to any map tiles.  Everything that you have cached should be still available, regardless of what version you are running.  It may just be a matter of pointing TF to the correct map cache directory?

Most servers are operating right now -- you should be able to get MyTopo, Color, etc up there in AK.

The skewing problem is certainly an issue up there, sorry about that.

TopoFusion Basic / Re: Create and export a map from TF to Etrex 30
« on: May 24, 2018, 12:42:05 PM »
Hi Bill,

The custom map feature is for a smaller area than the ATR covers, for certain.  You want a .IMG (vector) map similar to the one you used for Tour Divide.

You'll need to use Mapsource and some of the free US .IMG sources in order to do this (that's what I did for the TD base map).

It's a bit involved to make sure you cover the whole thing.  Another option is to buy a DVD (or SDcard) preloaded with maps for the whole country.  That's the more expensive but simpler option

Hope that helps some.  Good luck out there this summer!

TopoFusion Pro / Re: USGS Imagery
« on: February 05, 2018, 07:05:24 PM »
Here is a screenshot.  It looks very similar to MyTopo, except clear once zoomed in.  I'm assuming something like this can't be integrated (or would be difficult).

I believe that map type is in the software now under USTopo.  It isn't quite as clear as it shows in the National Map, but it's the same data.

There is also an alternative USGS topo source available as an 'easter egg' feature in the software.  Drop me an email if you'd like the details (and have a registered copy of the software).

Thanks.

I would like to see a tree structure for the files.  As you travel from one area to another you can select or deselect files.

Yep, a tree structure would be a nice way to display the individual tracks within a file (which you need to access using File Properties right now).  Thanks for the request.

Which map type are you seeing that looks good?  Can you post a screenshot?

Generally speaking you are correct that TF works with raster maps not vector.  MyTopo generally has the best detail for hiking/biking.  I would try that.

Thanks

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Color Aerial vs USGS Imagery
« on: November 16, 2017, 05:00:04 PM »

Hi Roger,

No, they are two different imagery sources -- you can toggle between them with fresh tiles and verify that.  Unfortunately the USGS tiles are not as high resolution as they have been in the past (in some areas).   Still nice to have multiple imagery choices.

Thanks!

92
TopoFusion Pro / Re: USGS Imagery
« on: October 31, 2017, 11:04:30 AM »

I think of the tilesets in terms of their shortcut keys.  "U" goes to USGS Imagery.  "C" is color.

I didn't notice the change in season -- I was only testing in desert areas (Moab, where I happen to be).  Unfortunately that was the only replacement service I was able to find.

If you want to poke around the base layers and full layers on the 'national map' do let me know if you find something that is winter and of similar quality/resolution.

Thanks!

Good news is a faster layer may have taken its place.  I'll need to do some testing but the current "C" may become "U" and the new layer taking over for "C".    If that makes any sense!

Roger -- that set of checkboxes being hidden is normal.  Almost all of the tilesets that used to appear there have gone away (e.g. Topo 4M, etc) so there wasn't a reason for it anymore.  It was removed in one of the last betas.

Since you both noticed this USGS problem just today I'm guessing it's relatively new.  The error I am seeing is:

"Could not access any GIS Server machines. Please contact your system administrator."

Let's give it a day or two to see if comes back on its own.  Thanks guys.
