Beta Testing / Auto-DEM download - new feature in next beta
« on: January 21, 2005, 10:56:30 AM »
I should have been more clear.  What I am seeing is a bug.  When I select the map type & size (Topo 4M, Combo 4M, etc.), I no longer necessarily get what I choose.  Right now, when I pick Combo 1M, for example, I get a way zoomed out LandSat.  Other times, when I choose a Combo view, I get the "Zoomed out too far" message even though I clearly am not zoomed to far (way down in 1 M territory).

It could just be a coincidence, but I have been using the Download Maps tool to gather a bunch of local tilesets.  It seems like the last time I tried this is when my maps.dat files and/or index file got corrupt and I had to delete them and start all over (a few weeks ago).  After that it was fine again until I installed the latest beta (2.17).  Perhaps the root of the problem lies with the Download Maps tool?

I've tried restarting, etc. and the problem won't go away.

EDIT:  OK, the trouble is only when selecting Combo 1M.  When I select Combo 1M, I get a way zoomed out LandSat (wider than any other LandSat in the dropdown menu).  All the other views work fine (I have all Tile Sets enabled in Preferences).

EDIT:  I also noticed the problem does not seem to be present if I start in Combo 4M and use the magnifying glass instead of the drop-down selector thing.

Combo tilesets give me "Zoomed too far out" way too early.  Individual tilesets all seem fine.  I didn't mess with it enough yet, but maybe it is happening when moving to the next larger tileset?

Beta Testing / Reverse route for climbing analysis?
« on: January 02, 2005, 10:16:12 AM »
I like to use Climbing Analysis to track climbing for mountain bike rides.  Sometimes I forget to turn my GPS off at the end of a ride, so it continues saving track points, overwriting early portions of my route.  For out-and-back rides, I could simply re-use the same data for the lost portion if I could reverse the route for the Climbing Analysis.  I know I can use the "v" key to do this with the Profile Tool, but how can I do this for Climbing Analysis?

How about being able to use the mouse to select an area in the Profile window, elevation graphic?  Right now a left click zooms in and right click zooms out.  Being able to select an area of interest instead would be a really nice feature.  The zoom feature wouldn't be lost, it would just be a little different.  It would be like "zoom to selection" instead.  The stats could be made specific to the current selection.  This would make the Grade stat much more useful, for example, because you could see the grade over a user-specified section of trail/road.

On a related note, how is the instantaneous grade currently calculated?  My guess is just the current point and previous point are used.  This isn't a very useful figure given the relatively poor accuracy of any 2 points in close proximity - especially from GPS data.

Beta Testing / Beta 2.11 Released

How about being able to "save" or "set as default" the Custom Algorithm Settings under Climbing Analysis?  The current default is DEM, which drastically slows the Climbing Analysis if you have DEMs for the viewable area available.  At the very least, change the default to GPX (stored) in the meantime to speed things up.  Personally, I find GPX (stored) w/3m Minimum Gain seems most accurate, so it would be cool if I could set this once and forget about it.  Maybe just another tab in Options/Preferences?

I'd be happy to send you my index file.

The slowdown started way back at some point around when version 2.0 was released.  I don't remember if it was exactly after I upgraded to 2.0.  I didn't give it much thought because I wasn't using TopoFusion as much at the time and I thought that if it was a bug in TF, it would be resolved quickly.  I was also having troubles with TF and Norton Security at the time, so I thought that may have been an issue too.  I believe that I was also downloading large sections of map data using the Load Map Data tool around that same timeframe.

My machine is a dual CPU 800 MHz PIII w/512 MB RAM and 4 drive SCSI (RAID 0) disc array.

PS.  When I said it was taking 5 minutes to start, I meant that literally.  I timed it quite a few times as I tried various things and the time was very consistent.

My MapIndex.dat file was 7.67 MB and Maps0.dat was 625 MB (same size as the rest of the Maps#.dat files).

Yesterday I deleted both the MapIndex.dat file and Maps0.dat file and now it starts normally using the maps data path with all my other Maps#.dat files.  TopoFusion created a new Maps0.dat file that is slowly growing in size.  I don't know if TopoFusion is using the other Maps#.dat files, but they have not been written since I deleted the other 2 files.  Maybe it writes to each Maps#.dat file in order until it reaches a max size, then starts a new one?  If this is true, am I going to be in trouble once the current Maps0.dat file is "full"?

I still have the previous MapsIndex.dat and Maps0.dat file in my Recycle Bin.  It would be a shame to lose all the map data I have.  It seems obvious that the problem was related to either the MapsIndex.dat file or Maps0.dat file or both.

Did I mention that the Maps0.dat file had a date that was 8 months old while all the others had a current date?  Any idea what the problem is and how to avoid it in the future?  What's going to happen when my new Maps0.dat file gets "full"?

I deleted the map index file and it started fine but it seems to be reloading all the map data.  No new map DAT files were created but files 1-6 were modified.  File 0 was unchanged.  I noticed errors on the displayed map as well.  There was an aerial photo tile in my topo map view.  Would this indicate that the 0 DAT file is corrupt?  I'll try just deleting that file and see what happens.

Not quite yet.  I switched the map directory and it is slow again.  It must have something to do with the map index or map files.  If I delete the map index, will I lose access to all the map files?  There are (7) 625 M map DAT files.

I moved all the DEM files and DEM index file.  No change at all.

I renamed the INI file and it started right up!  I believe the last 2 times I updated TopoFusion, I did not delete the INI file.  Perhaps there is some setting between the upgrades that caused a problem.  I'm glad there isn't really anything in there that matters to me very much.

I can send you the old INI file if you are interested.

Thanks for the tips.

Yes, I was using some DEM files about the time the problem started now that you bring it up.  They all seemed to work fine at the time.  I have 8 DEM files ~50-120 MB each.  I tried changing the DEM Directory and no change.  So TopoFusion is still finding the DEMs or this isn't the problem.  Can I just delete the DEM index file?

TopoFusion 2.1 is taking ~5 minutes to start-up on my machine.  The startup screen pops up right away and displays "Loading..." in the status area.  While waiting for TopoFusion to start, CPU usage is at 50%.  Once TopoFusion is finally running, it seems to function normally.

I'm running a dual PIII 800 MHz Windows XP Pro machine with 512 M.  I believe this started happening with version 2.0.
I don't have any tracks loaded (all Removed).  I've tried changing the Default Tracks Directory to simply "My Documents", where I have no GPX files, to see if this would help, but it did not.  I've also tried changing the Tile memory from 50% to 10%, but this also made no difference at all.  I've also tried disabling firewalls, anti-virus, etc.  Nothing seems to make a difference.

What is being loaded and why is it taking so long to start?

Make Network always crashes with some sort of exception the second time I run it during any given TopoFusion session.

What's the Merge tool?

It would be nice to be able to use Windows standard cut-n-paste type stuff when viewing the properties of a GPX file.  Even if just Ctrl-C & Ctrl-V worked, we could create new routes from existing files.  I often like to combine trails to make epic rides.  The date & time data could be ignored, but the coordinates and elevation data would be great!

Is there any way to export the map as displayed at a higher resolution than just screen?  Screen resolution does not yield very good prints.

Thanks.  I just discovered the Load Maps icon on my own!  It didn't help though.  I seem to be getting random tiles that think they are not already loaded.  I can close and restart TopoFusion and they appear in different areas each time and just seem to fix themselves at random as well.  I know all these tiles have been downloaded.  What would cause them to get marked as not loaded?

Bizarre.  I came back to my computer after a few hours away and it was still there.  Then I moved the map side-to-side and it displayed the tile!  I tried this before and it made no difference.  Previously I tried Alt-Tab, minimize, moving the non-conformist tile all the way off screen, disable-enable internet downloading, etc.  Nothing worked.  No idea why it suddenly healed itself.

It always displays as "downloading" even though the Topo and Aerial tiles are loaded.  This only happens on 1 tile on the screen.  How can I get it to refresh this data?

It would be nice if there were an option to force a refresh of all the tiles currently displayed.
