Archived Support / kml parse errors

Interesting - I just double checked a .kml file export and GE seemed to load OK.

Can you email the offending .kml file to support@topofusion.com so we can take a look?

Thanks and sorry about the problem!

Yep - that's the price we pay for going with the latest and greatest (DX9... well, 10 is out now too, but still).

If you don't need any Pro specific stuff, you might try version 2.971 (basic).  It's DX7 and will likely emulate much better.

Thanks for keeping us posted on emulation issues.

Hi,

Interesting that the latest Parallels broke TF support.

I like your thinking on a 2D-only version of TF.  The idea has some potential, however, it won't help in this case, or in any Linux/OS X support.

The 2D functions still use Direct3D (the Basic version uses DirectDraw in DX7), because in DX8+ directdraw is incorporated into Direct3D.

The error message about a memory pool surface not being created is a purely 2D function that's failing.  It's the memory cache of map tiles that speeds up regular display of maps.

Hopefully they'll sort out the D3D support in future versions of Parallels.  I don't think there is too much we can do about it until then.

Thanks for writing in, as always.

We're working on getting this info display in TopoFusion itself, but as of the current version, you need to go to terraserver-usa.com itself and check the title above the map.  Like this:

Interesting that Topo! will read waypoints but not track points from a GPX file.  Do you have the latest version (just wondering if track capability has been added or will be).

It shouldn't be too hard to convert tracks to waypoints, using an auto-naming scheme.  It may be useful for other things, so I'll add it to the 'todo' list.

Thanks.

Sorry about the delay in response, I've been cycling through Colorado for the past five days.

GOVSS is computed at one second intervals, as you're likely aware, but TF doesn't care what the resolution of your data is -- it interpolates everything to one second intervals.

So, it won't be quite as accurate, but you will get a very good GOVSS number, even with 301 data.

Sorry about the delay in response, I've been cycling through Colorado for the past five days.

Yep, that is a known misalignment problem with Terraserver.  It's unfortunate that it's at one of the nation's most famous parks.

You *can* correct for alignment errors using the "nudging" feature of TopoFusion.  However, it is applied across the board, per tileset, so it just means that you'd get correct alignment of tracks within the misaligned area, but incorrect everywhere else.  Make sense?

It is, however, easy to toggle on and off, as you travel around the map.

What data should the Run Analysis be pulling from the GPS?  Personal stats like weight and such?  Unfortunately I don't think the protocol for getting that info is in the Garmin spec, so while it's possible it certainly isn't easy.

10K is just the baseline default.  You can use any distance.  More details are on the GOVSS page, or head to:

Hi,

Right, the level of detail where you set the calibration points is not important.  But things do change when you change tilesets for display.

I tried adding 6 maps all overlapping and haven't seen any disappearing.

Can you send me the map files, and also your TopoFusion.ini file (so I can get the exact calibrations you are using)?

I'll see this once I get your files loaded, but are you using 2 or 3 point calibration?

Email to support@topofusion.com

Interesting, thanks for reporting the problem.  I've not encountered or heard of anything like this.

What base map (in TopoFusion) are you using, or do you have other maps completely turned off?

I don't have a fix for the problem.  Worst case you could send me the maps, but first I will try to recreate it with several overlapping maps.

Thanks.

Wait, do you get photo icons in TF, but not in the HTML?

If you have the photo icons on you should get thumbnails that are clickable on the map.  If the photo toggle is off you click on the photo icons as before.

I just tried it out on my machine and I get photo icons both in TF and the HTML, regardless of photo toggle.

Hmm.  Another question - when you profile the track do the sprites (hiker, cyclist, etc) work?

Archived Support / Photo icons in html map

Larry,

One thing is that the photo symbols actually come from the sprites.bmp file, not symbols.  They've been in TF for quite some time.

Is it possible you have a custom sprites.bmp that might be 'off' in some way?  To check, just move the file to a different directory (the default .bmps for both files are built in to topofusion and will be used if no file is found).

It would be possible to give a dropdown for the desired waypoint symbol for photos, but I don't think it makes too much sense -- most people probably want the waypoint to stay "Photo", and actually TF uses that to know it's a special kind of waypoint.

Let me know if you're still having trouble with it.

Feature Requests / Transparency setting for tracks
« on: August 11, 2007, 08:25:27 AM »
Cool, glad you're finding it useful.

Very easy to disable the track and keep the photos (waypoints).  Just turn the 'view tracks' toggle off.

Alternatively, copy the photo waypoints into a brand new GPX file with no tracks in it (use drag and drop between two file properties dialogs).

That said, transparency settings (per file) and width settings, for tracks, is definitely a planned feature.

Thanks.

The straight line you are getting is due to the direction the tracks are in.

After clicking on the second one, right click anywhere on the map to get the context menu.  Select "reverse last segment" and it should eliminate the extraneous line.

There's also an option to remove the last segment, if you clicked on the wrong track, for example.

Also, "clear all" will deselect everything.

I think you're right that the profile window needs to be supressed, perhaps by default.  Sometimes it's useful because you can see "flat" areas meaning you didn't get a continuous track, or need to reverse a track.  But it often gets in the way, too.

37 MB is a pretty large file.  Is the display slow with all those tracks visible?  I just noticed a total bonehead piece of code that now speeds up track drawing by 2X and often more, if not all the tracks are visible.  Speedup coming to a beta version near you...

Archived Support / TFP => gpx => GE: no tracks??
« on: August 02, 2007, 09:07:20 AM »
I just tried to open GPX files in my copy of GE and it didn't work for me either.  It's just a bug on their side, plain and simple.  The GPX files generated by TF pass all tests and are 100% valid.

I updated to the latest version of Google Earth and now GPX files (both tracks and waypoints) are loading just fine.

Another option would be to use TF to save to .kml rather than .GPX, in case you don't want to update GE.

Archived Support / TF Pro 3.12 - How do I get elevations to show??
« on: August 01, 2007, 08:53:44 PM »
Absolutely, your encouragement is encouraged!

I forgot to mention this - when you are in 3D mode you can get the elevation at arbitrary points.

As you hold down the right mouse button (to pan the map around, or move the blue 'center' circle around, if you want to think about it that way) the elevation at the blue sphere is displayed in the status bar (lower left corner of the TF window).

The 3D caching is definitely on the list, but it is a major project that will take some serious coding.  Needs to be done, though.

What problems are you having with GE<->TF?  Some issues reading .kml files have been fixed in v3.14, which I just released about 2 minutes ago.

Thanks.

Archived Support / TF Pro 3.12 - How do I get elevations to show??
« on: August 01, 2007, 10:22:07 AM »
OK, thanks for the clarification.  You are right that TopoFusion doesn't give you elevation at any mouse location.

The elevation data either comes from the GPS track itself, or from the NASA server (for 3D views).

Each time you do a 3D view the program downloads all the elevation data for the current view.  So it would require an http request every time the mouse is moved (not feasible, in other words).

In the future we hope to be caching 3D data locally, like GE does, and then we'd be able to get the elevation at the mouse.

Another thing we can do right now is give a right click option to simply request the elevation at a point clicked on it.  I'd like to see this feature in the interim, and will add it "todo."

Thanks.

Hi,

What do you mean by 'display this data on the main screen'?

Are there no climbing / descending stats on the track listed in the active log?

Or is there no elevation shading on the track?  If this is the case, it's probably just because elevation shading is turned off (there's a toggle on the toolbar for it).

How does the track look when you profile it?

Archived Support / Entering elapsed time
« on: July 30, 2007, 08:49:30 AM »
Hi,

Right, I was just thinking out loud about the 'prediction time' - I didn't say you needed it.  It was an idea, that's all!

I doubt that a GPS would be over your head -- they are pretty easy to use these days.

Once you have the distance (from TopoFusion) just divide that distance by your elapsed time (in hours) and you'll have your average speed.  All it takes is inputing two numbers into a calculator.

I agree that it would be nice if TF did this, but for various reasons, the design of the program would need to be seriously altered in order to accomodate this easy calculation.  One reason is there is no standard way to store "elapsed time" in a GPX file -- except by the timestamps with each point.  So we'd either need to extend the GPX format (no thanks) or fabricate time stamps for each point on the track.

The latter is the only one that makes sense, and I was just thinking about what else could be done if we want to take this step.

Hi Annie,

Glad you're enjoying the program.

To your question, I don't think there's any way to do what you're envisioning.  All of the time related computations operate on the timestamps that are associated with each point on a track.  If you just draw a track, and add elevation, you won't have any timestamps.  So, yes, you pretty much need a GPS to look at average speed, etc.

I could give some thought to giving an option to *add* time data to a GPX file.  It probably wouldn't be that hard.  Something that might be useful, as well, is a time *predictor* function.  Give a route, with elevation, and using mode of transportation (or based on a set of tracks that do have time data) predict the amount of time it would take to cover the terrain.

I'll jot something down in the ideas list to this effect.  Thanks for commenting and don't hesitate to ask further questions.

With a more reasonable (like the default) thumbnail size, the layout will be better.  Also try adding some descriptions in the File Properties / File Information fields -- they show up on the PhotoFusion page too.

256 is a power of two which is what your video card needs.  Go here:

Hi,

Saw your crash report -- thanks for submitting that.

Regarding the pathname (referenced in the report) -- that should be fine.  There's no leading slash for me and it works A-OK.  Also, you can't choose the name of the .html file, it's just a target directory and comes out as index.html.

A few questions, if you will:

I assume you first use the "Place pictures as waypoints" button to place some photos on the map?

Was this successful?  (did you get photos on your GPS track?)

Was the photo toggle (on the tool bar) on or off?  i.e., was TopoFusion displaying photo thumbnails on the maps, or just camera icons?

Hopefully I can track this down.  My first guess is maybe some trouble reading a .jpg file, for some reason, that the regular photo displaying code handles OK (no initial crash), but becomes a problem with HTML generation.

Thanks and sorry about the bug!  I thought PhotoFusion was pretty rock solid.

Right.  The video ram requirement is not hard and fast.  I think that laptop only has 16mb, yet it runs ok.

The problem is that smaller cards like these are older and likely don't have the driver support for full DX9.

Is it an ATI?  If so, you could try the ATI "Omega" drivers (third party).

You're right, if you grab a new area that's largely been downloaded before, there will be a delay as each tile is checked to see if it already exists.

There really isn't too much we can do about this.  Downloading batch is a 'set and forget' kind of operation, so I don't think it's that much of a big deal--as long as you know you aren't wasting space (or bandwidth).

Out of curiousity, how many mapsX.dat files do you have?  The larger your collective map set the slower this operation (starting a batch) is going to be.
