Just wanted to note that they fixed the road issue for Pima county.  There's getting to be quite a collection of free basemaps.

The following states are also available from the miscjunk link above:

Hawaii
Idaho
Mississippi
New Mexico

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Garmin eTrex Database Error
« on: February 26, 2009, 02:05:15 PM »
I get the same thing on my Vista - database error.

I'll keep looking, but in the meantime have you considered just using a saved track?  I rarely use a route to follow trails since the detail is lower and the beeping and such doesn't really help.

BTW, it shows 196 points because there are 100 track points (as you simplified to) and 96 waypoints.

Yep, the download maps tool is also the "reload maps" tool.  It looks like this:

You can draw a box around an area and pre-download.  Just be careful to not download too big an area at small tilesets -- it could take a while!  :)

Beta Testing / Some fixes - v3.72
« on: February 25, 2009, 07:32:49 PM »
There's a new beta out with a number of minor fixes and tweaks, mostly for specific users of the software.

Get it in the usual place:

http://topofusion.com/beta.php

And please let us know if you experience any problems with it.  With any luck, there should be less problems in this version!   ;)

3.72 ā€“ [2/25/09]  (Beta)

Fixed bearing giving 88.7 degrees when drawing tracks
Fixed issue with coordinate type not being preserved upon placing a waypoint
Fixed issue reading self ending ā€˜linkā€™ tags in GPX files from Mapsource
Added heartrate and cadence to .CSV export
Fixed crash loading bogus HTML files as GPX
Fixed profile clipping with Windows large (120 DPI) font
Fixed Overflow #6 error in Profile Window

Agreed, this would be a good feature and not too hard to add.  I'll go in the next time we revamp the log book feature.

Thx.

I get little black squares in Mapsource, not those flags.  Maybe you have an older version?

In any case, it's not the cool camera icon.  I'd consider changing to "Scenic Area" especially if other software expects / uses that.  I'll make a note to take look.

Thx.

It must have got messed up somehow.  I redid it and now my IE can load it (it gave me the red X too).  See if it loads for you now.

It might be a while before IE actually uses it in the address bar and such -- seems like it takes a while sometimes.

Thanks for pointing it out, Larry!

You can look in the log file for more info.  There should be a shortcut to it in the TopoFusion area of the Start  Menu.

What tileset and where are you looking?  Can you send the GPX file so we can try it on our end?

TopoFusion Pro / Re: How to Measure Existing Track Segment?
« on: February 17, 2009, 01:17:55 PM »
Hey Jim,

Hard to have a bad winter in Tucson...

There's no specific function to measure part of a track.  Here's what I do, though:

Quick estimate -- just use the profile tool to mouse over and find the start/end.

To get a precise number:

1) cut the track at the desired start and end points (2 cuts)
2) profile the newly created track and note distance/climbing/etc
3) right click on the file and choose "reload file" to revert to the saved version

I think the main reason there isn't something like this is difficulty choosing which part of a track (esp. when it loops or overlap) you are choosing.  If you have any thoughts as to how you'd expect a function like this to work, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks.

Thanks for the praise on the program -- glad you like it.

We are hearing increasingly from Mac users, but so far there are no plans for a port or anything.

Fortunately the latest version of VMWare Fusion runs TF Pro 100%.  See here:

I think VMWare Fusion runs about the same cost as TF Pro.  $70 or so bucks.

Hope that helps.

I did sit down and take a good look at it.  I would really like to see it added, but it's a lot more complicated than I first thought.

I haven't been able to distill it into the very small details I need to develop the app, nor have I found a suitable description elsewhere on the web.

I also found a post from the author of USAPhotomaps saying you and a couple other users were the only ones using it.  I know it'd be great for the SAR folks that use TopoFusion, but it didn't inspire me much.  :)

I will plan to take another (web based) look for better / easier documentation.

TopoFusion Anouncements / Version 3.70 released!
« on: February 10, 2009, 04:11:15 PM »

TopoFusion displaying geotagged photos

We're pleased to announce the release of a new version of TopoFusion Pro. Version 3.70 features an array of improvements, new features and fixes.

New and improved PhotoFusion

TopoFusion was one of the first pieces of software to place photos using GPS tracks, and we've further improved all the photo display/geotagging/handling options. Most significantly, the software can now read and write coordinates into photo headers (EXIF). With PhotoFusion's straightforward setup, this makes it one of the easiest options available for geotagging your images. TopoFusion's display of photos and the user interface has been significantly improved as well. For more info, see PhotoFusion.

More color aerials

We've added four more states to the Color Aerial Tileset. This brings us very close to covering the entire United States with high resolution imagery. Alaska, Washington, Georgia and West Virginia are new in v3.70. For more info, see Color Imagery. Remember you can also add your own servers using the WMS server feature.

Download

Head over to the Download Page to try TopoFusion out, free of charge. Registered users refer to your registration email for the download link, or go here to request your code and the download URL.

Beta Testing / Beta 3.69 - just a few more fixes
« on: February 09, 2009, 02:54:14 PM »
Thanks for all the beta testing, folks.

One last revision before releasing publicly.  Just a handful of bug fixes:

3.69 - [2/9/2009]  (Beta)

Fixed conflicts between CTRL key shortcuts and regular key shortcuts
Fixed issues with TopoFusion thinking CTRL key is held down
Fixed issues downloading from New Mexico's color aerial server
Fixed issue selecting photos in thumbnail box when photos disabled
Fixed PhotoFusion dialog stuck open if not jpegs found in PhotoFusion dir

If you have a chance, please use this version in the future.  Thanks!

TopoFusion Anouncements / Nasa server back up
« on: February 08, 2009, 12:07:03 PM »
As of this morning, the Nasa server is not responding.  You can check by clicking this link:

http://onearth.jpl.nasa.gov/

If you can't get a response in your web browser, you won't be able to get Landsat tiles or 3D downloads in TopoFusion.

These outages are usually short.  We'll keep checking and posting when we learn more.  Thanks for the patience.

TopoFusion Basic / Re: Some Topo 4M Maps not aligned
« on: February 05, 2009, 02:17:20 PM »
I made the mistake of touching "Calibrate Point X" which reset the whole setup.

Small problem: if I bring up the UML Window (^U) the base map switches to 1M Urban.

You can cancel calibration of any of the points by pushing the button again (text of the button changes to "Cancel Calibration"), so if you hit it by mistake again, no sweat.

Good point on the CTRL-U assignment!  I'll fix that.  Thanks.

TopoFusion Basic / Re: Some Topo 4M Maps not aligned
« on: February 05, 2009, 08:43:15 AM »
You can more or less tell TF where on a User Map a waypoint is.  You just have to click on the user map first, then click *on the waypoint* in the TF display.

You can nudge the calibration by clicking on the green cross that's in the middle of the map.  That will move it around.  You can also grab the calibration points, or the corners depending if you're using 2 or 3 point calibration.

1327
TopoFusion Pro / Re: User Map Library calibration info
« on: February 05, 2009, 08:40:32 AM »
You can transfer the info over, it'll just take some manual editing of files.

All the calibration data is in the TopoFusion.ini file (which if you've had TopoFusion for more than a few months should be in C:\Program Files\TopoFusion).

Open that file (in notepad, it's a text file), and find the section prefaced by [User Maps].  Copy everything up to the next [] header (it's [CustomWMS] in my file).  The pathnames are there and obvious so you can edit those there, too.

Hope that helps.  Shouldn't take too long to get all the data transfered.  In the future we'll have an easier way to export / import calibration data.

Thanks.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Resolution of color tiles
« on: February 04, 2009, 08:10:03 AM »
My mistake, it's the size of the tile, so divide by 512 pixels ~= 0.65 meters per pixel (in the northwest at least).

Thanks for pointing that out!

1329
Good point, it needs some options for what to include on the page.  Thanks.

1330
TopoFusion Pro / Re: Export View and Generate HTML
« on: February 02, 2009, 06:43:19 PM »
Yeah, there's still a limit on how much TF will shrink tiles.  If you cover a huge area and try to force it to 2m tiles, it could be thousands and thousands of map tiles, which would never fit in your main memory long enough to export the map.

You should be able to pick up a new card for $50 or less that can do 7000 or 8000 x 8000.  It's always confusing when researching video cards though -- 10,000 models.  Sounds like pretty much anything will be an improvement for you though.

1331
TopoFusion Pro / Re: Resolution of color tiles
« on: February 02, 2009, 06:40:15 PM »
It depends, both on what state you are in and your latitude.  The color aerials are not in a UTM projection, so a precise meters per pixel cannot be computed.

The numbers in the tilesets are lat/long degrees per pixel and are a constant.  It's just that the size of a degree changes depending on latitude.

That's the long (and perhaps confusing) answer.

Short answer: Most of the color tilesets are roughly 1 meter per pixel or better, which is the standard for NAIP data.

1332
TopoFusion Pro / Re: Export resolution
« on: February 02, 2009, 04:14:22 PM »
The color aerial data is in a different projection than other map sources (like the topos) in TopoFusion.

You made a good point -- the current worldfiles are not correct for the Color Aerials.  I will make a note to fix this for the next version.

Thanks.

« on: February 02, 2009, 11:27:41 AM »
Yep, would be useful.

The data is available on Terraserver-usa.com, and for the aerials we could simply collect it by hand it make it available in the program.   It would save me answering emails WRT this question all the time too.   When was "such and such photo taken?"  :-\

Do you know what video adapter you have?  You can check the TopoFusion log file (paste it here maybe), or find it in windows.

I have an older laptop that had the same issue on an ATI.  It needed not the most recent drivers but a special set of "Omega" drivers.  That did the trick.

Very unlikely it's a new TF bug, but I'm still considering it.

Thanks.

Beta Testing / v3.68 Out
« on: January 29, 2009, 12:46:44 PM »
More changes.  Hopefully final ones before going with a full release.

Please let me know if you notice anything undesirable when zooming in/out with the mouse wheel.  I've changed it a bit to hopefully keep it zooming under control.

Thanks

3.68 - [1/29/09]  (Beta)

Photos are now automatically rotated if EXIF orientation header present
PhotoFusion HTML page generation now works even if no photos are
  displayed on the screen
Fixed issues downloading exiftool.exe and GIS layers from topofusion.com
Decreased ability for mouse wheel events to queue (to prevent unintentional
  scrolling if display is slow)

Got your crash report in climbing analysis with the same DEM files.  Seems there's definitely a problem on Vista64.

Unfortunately it's going to be hard for me to debug since I have no Vista64 machine.  I'll see what my options are for emulating or finding such a machine.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Export View and Generate HTML
« on: January 29, 2009, 08:59:09 AM »
Try going larger than 2500 pixels.

Most likely, even if the software were to shrink Topo 2m tiles to fit your desired map area, you wouldn't like the result -- there just aren't enough pixels.

You can try to force it to use Topo 2m by turning off Topo 4m/8/16 tilesets.  But I'd up the resolution first.

I just tried it on Vista and found that the auto-download doesn't work (regardless of what OS you are on).  Something changed in the last couple days on topofusion.com that broke the exiftool download (and also GIS layers).  It was a quick fix for the next version.

But anywho, I was able to write EXIF headers once I got exiftool there.  Hmm.

Beta Testing / Re: v3.65 - new PhotoFusion stuff
« on: January 28, 2009, 03:44:59 PM »
Larry,

exiftool.exe should be in your default tracks directory, which may or may not be the Program Files\TopoFusion dir.  Sounds like not in your case.

If you got .jpg_original files it is running it, but the lack of coordinates is no bueno.

I was just about to try it on my Vista machine.  I'll see if there's anything different there.

Are you sure you didn't use TF's dialog to download exiftool?

Hi,

This is most likely a graphics card issue, so neither a TF or windows setting problem.

Check with your laptop manufacturer for an updated video driver.  Good chance that will solve the issue.

Please check back and let us know whether that fixes it or not.

Thanks.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Export View and Generate HTML
« on: January 26, 2009, 12:05:25 PM »
Yeah, the high res export function is a little tricky.  The Current vs Maximum detail may not change anything depending on the zoom level you are already at, and what your "Tileset Switching" setting is.  The idea is that the Maximum setting is equivalent to having the Tileset Switching slider all the way to the left (towards shrinking tiles).

And, yes, it functions by fitting everything you currently have on the map display in the higher resolution export.  Not sure how better to do this, but I'm open to suggestions.
