Beta Testing / Re: v3.83 released
« on: August 16, 2009, 07:56:06 PM »
Also, 3.84, a quick fix of a somewhat rare PhotoFusion / GPX issue.  Basically only affecting photo paths with ampersands in them.  But also a little robustness on the GPX reading code.

3.84 - [8/16/09]  (Beta)

Fixed GPX issue with PhotoFusion paths containing ampersand
Improved robustness of GPX reading

TopoFusion Anouncements / Color Aerial issues - v3.82 and earlier
« on: August 15, 2009, 12:34:59 PM »
There was a change in the way one of the color aerial servers is accessed recently.  As a result, current versions of TopoFusion Pro and unable to download color aerials for the east coast and a few other states like Texas and Oklahoma.

We've corrected the issue and released a beta version (see beta forum for info) that you can download if you are a registered user.

We plan to release a full public version with the fix in the next couple days.  As a side bonus, we also added color coverage for the state of Maine.

Note that if you have already downloaded color aerials you still have them.  This issue only affects download of new aerials.

Thanks for the patience on this, and also thanks to the users that pointed out the problem.

As of this afternoon, 8/13/09, 1:46 Pacific Time, Nasa's OnEarth server is not responding.  We'll keep checking and post anything we learn here.  Likely is it just a short hiccup.

Very cool.  I have an EeePC but it still has linux on it.  I need to go to windows and give TF a try.  Would love to see it running on the little computer.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Track tool: How do I draw tracks on current layer
« on: August 10, 2009, 09:17:19 PM »
Hey Wayne,

I think the manual covers it pretty well?

Right clicking brings up a menu that allows
the draw track to be saved into a new file (and subsequently added to the
active list).  IMPORTANT: if you do not right click and use Save As... the
drawn track will not be saved.

To answer your question, you can't right now save into a current layer.  However, that's definitely high on the todo list.  Another user requested that function, and I'd like to see it to.

Thanks Wayne.

Feature Requests / Re: Simplification for multiple tracks
« on: July 27, 2009, 12:53:51 PM »
Yep, there definitely needs to be a multi-track simplify tool of some kind.

One thought would be to be able to set a "points per mile" guideline.  That way longer tracks can use more points than shorter ones.

It should / will be included as a part of the network algorithm in the future.  The current method ends up with too many points as you've indicated.

I think a simplify dialog that works on all tracks within a file would be useful for other stuff, too.

Thanks.

Feature Requests / Re: Data for a Selection
« on: July 26, 2009, 08:50:55 PM »
Hey,

Have you tried using multi-track playback with all your tracks?

You can use the 'start "click start point on map" to choose a point (closest point for every track to the click) to start all the tracks.

You can then compare just that section (assuming they are all going the same direction) and even turn stats like speed, HR, cad, power, etc on, per track.

Beta Testing / Re: v3.81 Beta - Batch Downloading
« on: July 26, 2009, 06:33:47 PM »
BTW, I released v3.82 today with some changes, many of which are cosmetic:

Quote
3.82 - [7/26/09]  (Beta)

Added menu shortcuts for Mouse Tool modes:
Edit menu has: Edit Points, Edit Points (box), Cut Tracks, Merge Tracks
Map Menu: Pan Map, Mark Waypoint, Draw Track
   Analysis Menu: Elevation Profile
Changed "Tile Cache" to "Memory cache size" in Options->Preferences
Enlarged tileset selector in Batch Download Tool
Added "Disk Cache Size = Unlimited" note to Options->Preferences
Added auto "Reply-To:" field to crash reports
Added white background to 'onscreen' messages, also enlarged font

As usual, thanks to the users who made the suggestions for these tweaks.

« on: July 26, 2009, 06:32:53 PM »
Larry,

Thanks a lot for the feedback.  Glad to know it's working well for you.  I agree that batch downloads for color aerials is very cool.  The AZ server can be pretty slow at times, too, but the imagery is excellent and in many cases better than Google Earth/Maps!

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Import TIF (with TFW files) raster maps
« on: July 26, 2009, 06:31:11 PM »
Thanks for bumping this up.  I do intend to add some more calibrated map types to TF.  Really need better support outside of the US.

If you want to calibrate by Lat/Lon I suggest just adding a waypoint at those coordinates, then calibrating based on that.  That's usually what I do.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Map Cache Percent is odd
« on: July 26, 2009, 06:27:57 PM »
Ack -- shrinking cubicles are no good!  That said, I've been programming TopoFusion from a tiny windowless basement in Flagstaff for the last two months.

Zero complaints -- when I emerge from the cave it's in the 70's, and there are tree lined trails rideable from the doorstep!

It really helps when people point this short of issue out.  Another user just recently was confused about the same issue.

BTW, I've updated the manual with this info, and am going to change the dialog a bit, to indicate that the disk tile cache is unlimited in size.  Thanks.

1166
TopoFusion Pro / Re: Map Cache Percent is odd
« on: July 26, 2009, 04:39:41 PM »
Hey Wayne,

That number is actually just the Memory Cache, not the disk cache.  The disk cache is unlimited (well, ok, it's limited by the size of your hard drive, but it keeps growing as you download more maps).

You can only set the memory cache to use ~50% of your available memory, so that's why it only goes to 1gig of 2gig in your case.

Beta Testing / v3.81 Beta - Batch Downloading
« on: July 25, 2009, 12:02:23 PM »
Beta 3.81 is out and the biggest changes happened in the Batch Download tool, which has received a major overhaul.

The new tool is much more user friendly, with better options and much more feedback as to how things are proceeding, how long it's going to take, etc.  I'm pretty happy with it, but please let us know if you see any odd behavior.

Another nagging issue has been that exported maps with profiles have obscured part of the map.  Finally took care of that one, too.

Download in the usual place:

I'm not finding an alternate CO server in my notes right now.  There is one that I'm thinking of, but I can't remember the source.  I'll make a note to look again.

Yep, that's the 'span zones' topo mode.  Could be useful if the zone trickiness annoys you.

1176
TopoFusion Pro / Re: UTM Zone Weirdness
« on: July 13, 2009, 09:51:53 AM »
The mismatched tiles don't have to do with the zone boundary, actually.  It's just the way the server has stitched together maps from different sources.  That was the best collection of free color aerials we could find for Colorado.  You might try some other ones.  I knew of one or two others that did not cover the whole state but might possibly have better images/consistency in your area.

BTW, have you tried the alternate topo server where the maps stitch cleanly across UTM zone boundaries?

TopoFusion Anouncements / Terraserver not responding
« on: July 11, 2009, 03:59:16 PM »
Terraserver is not responding well as of this afternoon.  We've had reports of sluggish map download since yesterday.  Most likely these are just normal network hiccups, or they are updating/changing hardware.  I'm sure the downtime will be minimal, but we'll keep you informed here.

Thanks for the patience.

Yep, just download and install over the top of your current version.  No need to uninstall or anything.

Make sure you get the registered version.  Use the lost code form if you've forgotten the URL or your name/pw.

Yep, open up the file properties dialog and there are a number of fields you can add text to.  These are all part of the GPX standard, so other software will (should) read them too.  They are under the 'file information tab.'

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Import TIF (with TFW files) raster maps
« on: June 22, 2009, 11:43:05 AM »
You should be able to go up to 4000x4000 (some systems even 8000x8000) for the raster maps.  They will be a little slow to load, but even if you split it up you still have to load them.  Personally I'd go for large ones covering as much area as you can.

Yeah, waypoints are a good way to get them calibrated.  Doesn't need to be corners -- any landmarks should work.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Resolution of download/cashe DEM
« on: June 22, 2009, 09:13:04 AM »
Interesting that your data is off by a bit.

I think what is happening is that the interpolation setting doesn't apply to the downloaded DEM.  It's always bilinear interpolation, which gives the patch effect.  If you set to bilinear you should see similar results.

I can't remember why I didn't add the other methods, but there must have been some issue with it..  I'll make a note to check it out.  Thanks.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Import TIF (with TFW files) raster maps
« on: June 22, 2009, 09:10:21 AM »
Unfortunately not at this time -- TF can't read .TFW calibration files (nor can it read TIFF files).  Hopefully in the future.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Resolution of download/cashe DEM
« on: June 21, 2009, 08:59:53 PM »
Got it -- I see what you are talking about.  Not egregious but definitely an error.  It may be something TF is doing -- the interpolation scheme.  Can you double check what your interpolation scheme is?

The other possibility is just loss of info in the server's conversion to PNG.  I don't think it is loseless.  But I'd like to check the interpolation thing.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Resolution of download/cashe DEM
« on: June 21, 2009, 09:09:37 AM »
Hey Larry,

The downloaded DEM data is 30 meter resolution -- the NED (National Elevation Dataset) data from USGS.  You might have 10 meter data, but most DEM is 30 meter.

If you're seeing blockiness, make sure you aren't on the "Force SRTM" option in 3D Options.  That uses the 90 meter worldwide dataset.  Otherwise, maybe post a screen grab?

Thanks.

Right, they are one of the default "custom WMS" tilesets.  Go to Window->WMS Custom Servers and you can uncheck it there.  It then won't show up in the tileset drop down.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Help with DEM elevation data
« on: June 16, 2009, 09:24:07 AM »
If you download (assign) new DEM data to the file, the total should update in the main form (unless it already had DEM data assigned to it, of course).  However, the method that the main form uses to compute elevation gain is always the same.  Those settings (like minimum gain) only effect computations in Climbing Analysis itself.

Hope that answers your question.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Batch Download - Difficulty contacting server
« on: June 16, 2009, 09:21:25 AM »
Interesting.  The internet preferences shouldn't have been overwritten upon upgrade, especially not to 3.80.  It's possible with earlier upgrades, though.

Persistent connections might help, but I think it was probably just server issues.  I agree that it should try again after a certain timeout.  I'll add that to the list.  Thanks.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: saving as csv defaults to UTM
« on: June 16, 2009, 09:19:11 AM »
Hi,

Sorry for the late reply on this -- apparently the notifications for the forum got turned off and I didn't see this until now.

You are right that the .csv export is always UTM.  I would suggest using the Maptech .MXF format.  It's essentially a .csv (and will load up the same in excel, for example).  The waypoints there will output in lat lon and WGS84.

Hope that helps.

Re: time.  Thanks for pointing that out.  Must be a new-ish bug.  I am seeing it too on new waypoints.  I'll get it fixed for the next release.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Combo Maps
« on: June 07, 2009, 09:39:51 PM »
1. Depends on your GPS, and how good sky / blockage conditions were the day you recorded the track.  Remember that if you have bad 2D errors in your track, you'll get incorrect DEM elevations, especially in steep terrain.

2. What GPS are you using?  You may be able to eliminate those useless tracks before saving them out upon download.

3. Those maps are in a different projection type.  But TF is moving towards that projection type -- we definitely intend to add support for color aerial / topo / landsat in combo mode.

Thanks for posting.

Hmm, 90% success rate is not common.  But perhaps just a local connection issue, yep.

Did you try the color aerial tileset?  If available for your area (most are), it's usually only a few years old.  TIGER is old, and unfortunately our road map coverage is lacking.

Not familiar with Expedia USA -- are they public domain by chance?

Right, 80 outbound.  You haven't been able to download any maps?  You just have the pre-installed landsat (large scale) maps, and as soon as you zoom in the error pops up?  Just checking that it's the landsat server it's trying to access.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: TopoFusion Pro Refusing to Download Maps
« on: June 03, 2009, 10:12:44 PM »
Hi,

That error code means 'connection timed out.'  It could really be that the server is not responding (I just checked the major TopoFusion servers and they are serving tiles quickly).

My first guess, though, is that you need to allow TopoFusion to access port 80 in your firewall software.  Is it your home computer?  If not you may need to check with your IT guys about allowing the application access.

If that doesn't help, let me know and we can dig deeper into it.
