Archived Support / Center map on file problem
« on: September 12, 2004, 10:11:18 AM »
No, this is likely a bug in TopoFusion.  I do not believe that the USB code has been tested by anyone outside of the US.  It should work since it essentially uses the older serial code.  But it looks like this is our error.  Sorry.

You do know that TF doesn't have access to any maps outside the US, right?

Anyway, thanks for reporting the problem.  I'll try to fix it for the next release.  If you are really anxious to try the program, of course, I can send you a dev. version with the fix.  Just let me know.

All the points are bogus!  I don't understand what could have caused this.  The longitude is 353 W, which does make sense, however, we assume that it is 0-180 (E or W).

This is very strange since I have a 60CS and have downloaded hundreds of thousands of track points without problem.  Where do you live, out of curiousity, and are you using a beta firmware or anything?  (have you updated it at all)?

There must be a bogus point somewhere in the tracklog.  Right click on the file (in the listview at the bottom) and do Properties.  Look in the list of trackpoints for something with a ridiculous lat/lon (or UTM).  It is likely that it's at the start of the track.  Delete the points and double clicking should give you a better result.

Well, the network works on all tracks that are currently loaded (enabled in the active file list).

It's definitely possible to do multiple network constructions to get the desired results, but typically I just try to get it to work all in one shot.

Remember that reduction strength controls how close tracks need to be in order to average them.  Unless you have some unique trails that are very close to each other there isn't much harm in cranking this slider up high.

Contraction, on the other hand, deletes spurs that sometimes result in the network as a result of turning around, standing still while collecting points or going off trail for whatever reason.

Unless you've got some very difficult data I'd recommend trying to get what you're looking for in a single run.  I'd still be glad to take a look at your data.

Mark,

There is a way to create "virtual tracks" using a network.  Just use the profile/merge tool.  Select each segment of the network in order, and be sure to reverse any (using the "v" key or right clicking) that match up backwards.  Right click when you are done and do "save as.." to a GPX file.

As to your comments about editing networks, you are right on.  I do hope to add some sort of tools for handling how the network code works on a local level.

However, I have used the network code for a dozen different projects (some mtb race courses) with great success.  It does take some tweaking and certainly helps to understand the algorithm.  You could try reading our paper (available at http://www.topofusion.com/network.php).  Or, you can send me your data--I would be happy to take a look at the resulting networks and could probably point out what's keeping you from getting the results you're looking for.

As it stands, the network feature takes both quite a bit of knowledge and patience.  I hope to remedy this in the future.

Nope, TF can't save a log out.  You are not the only one to request this so it will get done (and is really not that hard to add).  It's definitely high on the list.

Maybe in the next beta...

I like your idea about shading large scale tiles to indicate whether the tiles "below" them have been downloaded.  We'll think about that.

You can do batch downloads of tiles using the 'load maps tool' (on the toolbar).  Just draw a box, go to sleep, and you'll have your tiles.  Turn off whatever tilesets you don't want in Preferences->Tilesets.

Hi,

Maybe I can try to track down the problem if you send me the three tracks in question.  smorris@topofusion.com will work.

As to deleting entries from the logbook what editor are you using to delete the entry?  You need to not have it "wrapping" the lines of text (i.e. you need to delete the entire line up to and including the end of line character).  I use Ultraedit w/o word wrap and can successfully remove/insert lines.

You could also load the file in excel and try deleting/editting there.  But there really shouldn't be much of a need to edit the file--you can remove them from logbook dialog itself.

Send me those files and I'll have a look.

Also you could try deleting the demIndex file.

Archived Support / I broke the logbook
« on: August 28, 2004, 09:19:17 AM »
Deleting the logbook file should have the same effect as reinstalling.

The general convention that TF was designed around was to have each ride (or run, hike, etc) in a separate file.  It's much easier to manage, simpler to transfer to other people and also runs faster.

The logbook assumes that each file is for only a single day.

It is possible you somehow messed up the logbook file, though I have successfully deleted, copy/pased, etc into it before.

Just delete the file and start over again.  If two files end up on the same day you can remove (inside the program) both of them, then do "add all files to log book" with only the file you wanted for that day loaded.  We hope to have a better way to handle multiple files per day soon.

Post again if you're still having problems.  There could be a problem that needs a further look.

Beta Testing / v2.06
« on: August 21, 2004, 07:49:13 AM »
Hey everyone,

In case you didn't get the email, v2.06 is out:

The loap maps tool now behaves correctly and will download        urban tilesets.

The box drawn in load maps now sticks around and can be saved as a GPX file using right click / save as...

Fixed some tileset switching issues

Added black to top of "elevation shaded" profiles (cosmetic)

Fixed bug where closing in BW aerial would result in color aerial toggle upon next startup.

After this we're going to (finally) do a full release, then we hope to start working on some new stuff.

Also, Alan (the other author) had made rumblings about incorporating polar heart rate monitor info in TF.

Archived Support / Some, maybe naive, questions
« on: August 12, 2004, 06:31:02 PM »
Hi,

1. Yes, TF uses the elevations provided by the GPS itself.  It can also use elevations along the route, as you say, if you have DEM data for the given area.  You have to use the 'climbing analysis' box to add DEM elevation to the file.  DEM elevation also has its problems, btw.

2. It is likely that you lost signal at some point during the run.  The GPS didn't pick up this distance since it had no signal, but then you used TF to merge the segments together resulting in a longer distance.  The TF is probably closer to the actual distance you ran.

Ah, good point.  The batch download code actually shouldn't get any of the urban tiles!  I'll fix it for the next version.

We also will eliminate the "topo only" "aerial only" stuff since we have the tileset selector stuff.  That will be the way to get what tilesets you want.

Hi,

Nope, sorry there isn't an easy way to do this.  The xml used by the logbook looks very similar to GPX, so it is really unfortunate that Garmin simply did not chose to support GPX instead!

I'd email them... but there are other things to complain about their pitiful logbook program as well.  I know that "GPSVisualizer" can read the XML files, though I don't know if there is anyway to get back a GPX or other format file.

Wow, that is far off.  Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be a bug in TopoFusion, but seems to be Terraserver's problem.  They are off in all of the Colorado Springs area.

I've looked at 4 or 5 other cities (including Tucson) where things are lined up more or less perfectly.

Why don't you send an email to the support address at Terraserver.  They may be able to fix it quickly.  I'll send one as well.

To turn off the underlying maps, use the toggle on the toolbar.  The third toggle from the left (looks like a checkerboard) turns on/off the background map.

Beta Testing / Color Aerials - new in v2.04
« on: May 30, 2004, 04:40:10 PM »
Terraserver has added a number of cities to their "Urban" aerial photo coverage.  I discovered that Tucson was among the new cities, and instantly began working on incorporating the new maps into TopoFusion:

Already I have spent hours exploring all of the covered area around Tucson.  Fortunately the coverage includes most of Starr Pass and the Catalinas--even some of the Redington area and Rincons.  This is too much fun.

Not only are they color, they're 4 times more detailed and much more current (2002)!!

Anyway, I just put up the latest build: v2.04, on the beta page.  Please check it out and let us know of any problems or comments!

Here are the cities that are covered:

Albuquerque Amarillo Anchorage Atlanta Baton Rouge Charlotte Chicago Colorado Springs Dallas/Fort Worth Detroit El Paso Fort Wayne Fresno Houston Jackson Knoxville Lexington Lincoln Lubbock Mobile Modesto Montgomery Oklahoma City Orlando Portland, OR Providence Raleigh-Durham Sacramento Saint Louis Seattle Shreveport Springfield,
MA Stockton Tampa/St. Pete Tucson Washington, DC

Other cities are being loaded "constantly" as they receive them from the USGS.  It could be months, or it could be days....

Thanks.

Thranks for the praise.  Now to the problem.

There are two possible (and easy to fix) sources of error:

1 - check that the time setting on your camera matches your GPS.  Some people take a photo of their GPS on the time screen so that they can set the offset correctly afterwards.

2 - Wrong time zone setting.

It looks like the photos are just off by a few minutes, so I'd check the camera's time.  To fix this one you can use an offset (in addition to time zone) set to whatever the difference in the GPS/camera's clocks is.

If this doesn't fix it, let us know.

Beta Testing / v2.03 posted

We just put out a new beta:

Beta v2.03

Hopefully USB and NMEA are solid now, and we've added the ability to turn on/off tilesets for both display and batch download.

I was getting sick of the Topo 8M and 32M GIFs, which although they have better quality than the jpeg 16M and 64M, are slower to decode, which results in slower panning and zooming.

It makes the batch download more useful now too--if you only want a particular tileset, for example.

There is a problem in your MapIndex.dat file -- it is likely corrupted somehow.  If this file is small enough (and the associated Maps.dat file), could you please email both files to us so that we can get rid of the bug?

There is an easy way to fix this though: delete MapIndex.dat and any MapsX.dat files.  The files are located in Program Files\TopoFusion.

Note that uninstalling TF does not remove these files, you have to remove them manually.

Let us know if you're still not able to get it to work.  Thanks.

Bob,

I cannot figure this one out.  By looking at all of the Garmin documentation and the code in TopoFusion I can see nothing wrong.

I confirmed with a user who has a GPS 12 (not map) that all functions works.  If it works using old Garmin, the 12 map must be using a different, maybe undocumented, format.  Do other GPS programs successfully save/load waypoints?

If so, I will put together a test version for you so we can see exactly what format things are in.

Thanks for your patience.

Network bug -- Do you have the latest version of TopoFusion?  This bug was (I thought) resolved with v2.0.  I will see if I can duplicate it.

The merge tool is the profile tool (it's profile/merge).  You can use it to piece together a new route from a network -- "virtual tracks" -- by clicking on each portion in succession.  If the most recently added track is backwards you can push the "v" key, or right click and select "reverse" to reverse it.

Hi Mike,

There is a way to insert points into a track.  When you have one point selected, push the 'insert' key to get two new points (one on either side) at the midpoints.

I agree that there needs to be some way to add tracks to a file... instead of the only option being to save to a new file.  This will require a bit of reworking of major parts of the code, but I would like to see it done eventually.

I'm glad to learn a bit about what your company uses TF for.  It's interesting to see the many varied uses out there.  Let us know how else we can help.

Hi Bob,

Are you using a recent version of TopoFusion?  I have email from a GPS 12 owner who confirmed that both download and upload of waypoints was working.  But I did need to fix it for him and it was 6 months ago.

There could be a problem in the uploading, but downloading should work.  It gets the latitude correct, but not the longitude?  That is odd because that was the same bug that I fixed back then.

Have you tried making a network, then putting together trails using the merge tool?

That makes a lot more sense to me than cut and pasting portions of tracks--which you also can do graphically right now using scissors and the merge tool.

That said, standard cut and paste in the properties dialog is not a bad idea, for the long run.  However, since there are other ways (that I think are easier, though I may not be understanding what you're trying to do), we won't make it a priority.

Tracks -- what do you mean by the last part?  Is it always a set number of points that gets download (ie the last 250) or?  Can you quantify what exactly is being downloaded somehow?

Tracks, as far as we know, are still working.

Beta Testing / v1.7 and the Forerunner
« on: April 11, 2004, 08:43:31 AM »
Quote (AndyB @ April 06 2004,8:04)
Just tried Version 1.7 and here are a few initial items that I would 'ideally' to see in Topofusion for the Forerunner.....(probably the only items left that I ‘like’ about the Garmin Logbook product!).

(a) Downloading tracks/runs in the Gramin Logbook is very simple. It knows what are the new tacks/runs and just downloads them automatically with a single button press (i.e. no asking for file-names it just downloads new tracks and appends to the current logbook file). I like the idea of automatically appending each new track/runs into a single file (e.g. “Andrew’s 2004 Running.gpx”) but still having the ability to manage/view each track/run individually (i.e. logbook and viewing of tracks/runs still shows each individually). Maybe this can be done with version 1.7 now and I just have not found it out yet. The fallback option would be to have Topofusion automatically generate filenames based on run date?

(b) I do like the 'Windows Explorer' GUI design in the Garmin Logbook software for displaying automatically rollup of weekly/monthly/yearly totals. Topofusion is more flexible in allowing selection of start and end-dates for summaries, but for most users a automatic weekly/monthly/yearly totals display would be more user friendly, and mirror the on-board Forerunner history feature.

© I don’t see any download of ‘calories’ data in Topofusion…. It’s a pity not to include this data in the logbook

(d) In the logbook summary text screen I intuitively tried to enter free text (e.g. a few personal notes about the run), but it did not seem to allow this??

(e) The ability to print logbook summaries would be very nice…….admittedly the Gramin Logbook does not have this either.

In all other aspects Topofusion is a much superior product than the Gramin Logbook software, but for the increasing number of folks buying the Garmin Foerunner the ability to downloading all new tacks/runs into Topofusion with a single mouse click would be a big help.

Andy,

Here are my thoughts.  Again thanks for the suggestions.

(a) Our design has always been around the single file per track idiom.  There are various reasons why we think this is better than storing all your data in a single place.  For instance, my collection of GPS data is growing to over 500,000 points, meaning that a single GPX file would be ridiculously large and very slow to read in on EVERY boot up of the program.  Multiple files also means that it's easier to send data to people.

What was lacking before the logbook was a means to index all your files in a way that made sense.  That's why I really like what the forerunner has done for TF.

As for ease of downloading, I don't think it's too much to ask the user to name a file for each download.  However, it may be possible to check what data is "new" to ease the process.  I'm not quite sure how that would work though, but could be done using the logbook.

BTW, there is a way to download tracks into an existing file--just choose it in the dropdown of the GPS dialog.  You won't get the new "merge/delete tracks" dialog, however, and it will probably save all of your saved tracks to the file as well.

(b) I agree that there needs to be some automatic way to get weekly or monthly totals.  I will have a look at the Garmin logbook when my Forerunners arrive (this tuesday).

© I've never found calorie computations to be very accurate, however the equations are not hard to implement.  It was actually there in an earlier version but I took it out because I don't agree with the way slope is handled (linearly).

(d) No, the place to enter personal notes is by doing "File Info" -- perhaps we should change what the button says.  I can see why you tried to enter data there--it looks like you can and it says summary.  Hmm.

(e) Agreed.
