Beta 3.91 is out with the new AZ server.  It doesn't seem like the original server is going to get their act together, so we'll switch.

Should be out in full release form later this week.

I noticed that the original land ownership layer is now working again!  No need to apply the fix.  Version 3.90 works fine for downloading this dataset.

Beta Testing / Beta 3.91
« on: October 19, 2009, 09:26:39 PM »
Beta 3.91 is out in the usual place.

I've been working on the export feature a bit.  It's now much easier to get what you want in a high res map.  The 'constrain proportions' feature is mighty useful.  Also new is the introduction of .tfv files -- they save viewport, window size, tileset, zoom level, etc.  Making it easy to reproduce a particular map if you need to recreate it.  Open up a .tfv file in a text editor -- very simple, self explanatory format.

I've given up on the original AZ server -- it has proved too buggy.  None of my fixes were effective.  So I've switched to a different one.  From what I can tell it is exactly the same imagery, but has been processed a bit differently -- slightly different coloring and just a touch more washed out.

Plus a bunch of smaller stuff:

Quote
3.91 - [10/19/09]  (Beta)

Added "Export View Parameters" (File Menu) to save .tfv (Topo Fusion View) files
Use File-->Open or drag/drop to reload view parameters, including size of main
  TopoFusion window
"Dot" track type (GPX 1.1) now use actual dots.  Appearance improved
Added checkbox to "constrain proportions" to export view function - locks aspect
ratio to the current window size
Optimized memory usage for large scale exports.  Should be able to export up to
the maximum texture size (8192x8192 on newer cards)
Switched servers for Arizona Color Aerials (old server continues to have issues)
Fixed 'reverse mouse wheel' setting not being applied upon initialization
Improved accuracy of stopped time calculation for 'moving intervals' analysis
Fixed problem reading Adventure Cycling waypoint files (CDATA related)
Added option to "Include TopoFusion logo" to exported images
Added "crosshair" icon type, and set it as the default for new installs
Reversed direction on 'darkness' shaded relief slider bar
Changed shaded relief lighting direction slider to 0..360 degrees
Changed 3D background back to black

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Confusion concerning Climbing Analysis
« on: October 18, 2009, 07:08:29 PM »
1. Topo USA.
2. Training center primarily uses the Box Filter to remove noise from the calculation.
3. It controls how much smoothing of the signal (elevations) is performed.  The wider the filter, the more smaller total climbing should be.

All of the 'presets' for different software are simply approximations / best guesses for what the programs are do.  I don't actually know what they are doing.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: Confusion concerning Climbing Analysis
« on: October 18, 2009, 09:07:02 AM »
Hi Bob,

The recommended choice is "Download/cache" as long as you aren't interested in an area that is near any US border.  There are two elevation datasets available from the server.  One is 30m NED data for the whole US, and another is SRTM 90m data for the rest of the world.

TF automatically chooses between the two, but if you had a track that crosses the US border you'd need to force it to only us SRTM.

The other option, Local Dem files, is only pertinent if you have downloaded and set up your own DEM files.  For most people this won't apply, but some users do have their own DEM collections (this is separate from the now 'local' DEM files that TF automatically caches for you).

"From loaded tracks" was supposed to be removed!  It was removed from 3D options, but apparently not climbing analysis.  Thanks for pointing it out.  It was a very early attempt to create elevation data by interpolating GPS collected elevations.  An interesting experiment and perhaps useful before TF had the elevation download/caching system.

Thanks for the questions.

Feature Requests / Re: Spacebar = switch to pan
« on: October 16, 2009, 09:46:29 AM »
TF has this feature, except it is tied to the CTRL key.  Holding it down temporarily switches to pan mode, and you are right that it's very useful.

I didn't know space does it in Adobe products.  Maybe we could make it both space and CTRL.

I have received a response from the folks at the AZ server and they are looking into the problem.  Right now they think it is an ESRI bug, so it may be a while.

The next beta version will have a change to use a different server with slightly different but similar quality images.

Thanks for the patience.

Hey Roger,

There's a bit more info about AZ specifically here:

http://www.topofusion.com/forum/index.php?topic=3980.0

I was about to write an update as the folks at the server are working on it, and I also have a different server ready that I can release in beta form.

Thanks.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: waypoints, cue sheets, and bikely
« on: October 14, 2009, 03:44:37 PM »
Nice.  Could make for good bikepacking.

I have never tried/relied on anything like bikely to make cues for me.  I just do them by hand and using various map sources (online and paper).  But mostly it's based on on-the-ground recon.  Often roads are not signed as they are indicated on maps, have different local names, etc.  IMO there is no substitute for actually having been there, looked at the intersection and coming up with an English description for how to proceed.

But... I am often dealing with trails and subtle turns between trails and little used trails... so your experience may differ.

I'm still not sure I understand what info is being lost between TF <--> Bikely.  Rereading I guess the problem is on bikely's end -- once you export out of there you can't get back to where you were and have to start over with cue/waypoint info?  Hmm.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: How to get others to see Topofusion project?
« on: October 14, 2009, 10:18:02 AM »
Depends on how you want to share the data.

You could simply use the 'export view' function to export a map, even high resolution, in jpeg/png/bmp format.  What you see is what you get on the main TF map.

Or, use PhotoFusion to create an interactive HTML page that you could post if you have a web site.  This would allow people to see a thumbnail of the photos you took and be able to click on them in the map.

Finally, if people want access to the actual data so they can examine in high detail, just share a GPX file with the photo locations with them.  Then they can open that up in TopoFusion or other GPS software.

Hope that helps.

Hi,

Sounds like a cool project.  What kind of routes are you mapping?

There's no way to create cue sheets in TopoFusion (except manually, which I have a fair amount of experience doing! EG:  this and this.

As for the loss of waypoints, maybe you can send me a GPX file so I can take a look?  Maybe there is something I can do on TF's end.

Ah, don't use Lap Analysis -- that is for splitting tracks up into different intervals.

Select the file you want, do 'save as...' then select .csv.  You'll see a column for power, HR, Cad, etc...

TopoFusion Pro / Re: New Member With Software Questions

.CSV is export only for TF, but it is designed to be read by RaceDay, so yes, you should be able to add HR to it and import.

There should be a column for HR when you load the .csv in excel.

Don,

Yep, I spoke to Phil about it briefly and he is definitely interested.  He thinks the current formulas would be applicable and would certainly give a rough idea of fitness/etc.

705 still has a few quirks, I think, but it's come a long way.  It would definitely solve your combination problem, though I would like to write the code if I get some time in the next month or so.

Yep, I was able to improve the blending of the relief to not fade out non-shaded hillsides.  It was definitely an improvement over the beta version.

Agree that darkness could be reversed.

And also on the lighting scale.  I couldn't find a circular control that was easy but in minimum it should be 0-360.

Thanks for the thoughtful suggestions.

TopoFusion Anouncements / Land Ownership layer FIX
« on: September 30, 2009, 09:28:45 PM »
Well, the "Land Ownership" server changed on us, of course it was right after releasing a new version and then spouting off about it!    ::)

Fortunately the fix is easy:

1. Go to Window->WMS Custom Servers.
2. Left click to select the "Land Ownership Layer"
3. Delete everything in the large "Request" Box.
4. Replace with this string:

wmsconnector/com.esri.wms.Esrimap/BLM_MAP_SURFACE_MGT_AGY?VERSION=1.1.1&SERVICE=WMS&REQUEST=GetMap&SRS=EPSG:4326&LAYERS=BLM+Lands,US+Forest+Service,FWS,DOD,BOR,BIA,National+Parks,BLM+National+Monuments,BLM+Wilderness+Areas,BLM+National+Conservation+Areas,OTHER,STATE,LOCAL&TRANSPARENT=FALSE&FORMAT=image/jpeg

5. Hit the "Save Changes" button.
6. Close the WMS Custom Servers dialog.

You're good to go.

Fortunately with this change I think the output has improved a bit.  There seem to be more text labels.

Sorry about the issue!  Of course the fix will be incorporated into the next release, but I wanted to get this out there as an immediate fix.

Not quite.  The land ownership layer is not working right now -- giving a service unavailable error.

Color should work, except AZ, as noted in the other thread.  Not sure about Mexico -- it should give B/W aerials for Mexico.  Does it not?

Land Ownership and Mexico are Custom WMS servers that come pre-programmed, so if you want to turn them on/off you do so in the "Custom WMS Servers" (under the window menu).  Color is a special tileset made up of a conglomerate of many servers.  It cannot be turned on/off at this time, except for batch downloads.

Color aerials are working in all states except Arizona.  You are in AZ, right?

There's a thread about AZ server issues lately:

http://www.topofusion.com/forum/index.php?topic=3980.msg107315#new

It was back, but as of today I am seeing the same problem where it doesn't like multiple connections.  To fix for the time being, set the 'number of connections' setting to 1.  You shouldn't get any 'error tiles' after that.

(There's more info in that thread about that setting).

Oh, HR and Time.  Well, that makes it a different (though easier) problem. Unfortunately there isn't code in TF right now to merge based on timestamps.  It isn't a super hard piece of code to write, but it will take some work on the UI end.  I guess I have to weigh how much interest there would be for this feature.  Any thoughts on that?

TopoFusion Pro / Re: New Member With Software Questions

Let's see, Forerunner 50 TCX file with no coordinates, but only distance and heart rate.

There is a function to add Power and Heart Rate with a GPX file, but the power/heart rate file needs to be in a comma separated format (specifically, Powertap's format).  If you could somehow get it into that format you can definitely combine them.

As for power with horse+rider, you could try it I suppose.  A horse's physiology (and top end speed) is quite different, but I bet it would give you something that is somewhat useful.  You might ask Dr. Phil over at http://www.physfarm.com/.  He is the brains behind the power computations in TopoFusion.

Your last question: yes the combined file could be uploaded to Motionbased.  Well, Garmin Connect since Motionbased doesn't accept uploads anymore.  :)

Curious - I am getting 100% success with tiles if I set the "number of connections" (options->preferences->internet) to one.

We'll see if they open it back up to more connections as things improve.  For now, this is a workable temporary fix.  The tiles still come in fairly fast.

The AZ server is up and responding, but giving an 'internal server error'.  Occasionally it serves a tile, but mostly it's just the error.

This is as of this morning 9/24/09, 7am AZ time.

You'll get a 'tile missing' error in the meantime.  We'll continue to monitor this.

1085

I have looked at the 3D Connexion device, and it looks cool and not that expensive.  I do hope to take a crack at improving the 3D mode in TopoFusion, and if that is successful I will definitely consider buying one and adding support.

Thanks Larry.

Shaded Relief

We are excited to release the next version of TopoFusion Pro, v3.90.  This version features shaded relief mapping, available for the entire world, and for all map types.  Shaded relief really brings maps alive and helps with visual understanding of the terrain.  Plus it just looks cool!!  The elevation data is downloaded automatically as you view maps, just like the map tiles are.  Once you download it, you'll always have it, with or without an internet connection.

Look for the Shaded Relief toggle on the toolbar.  Here's what it looks like:

(Also find it in the "Map" menu under Shaded Relief).

Land Ownership

Also new is the Land Ownership layer, which shows which agency (e.g. Forest Service, BLM, etc) owns a particular piece of land.  This is very useful for planning exploratory hikes, or perhaps a bikepacking trip.  The legend for the colors in the map is here:

http://topofusion.com/images/federal-legend.gif

Color Aerial Download Fix

Finally, some server changes have caused a majority of the maps in TopoFusion's Color Aerial tileset to fail to download, giving a "map missing" error.  If you are seeing these errors for your area, download the latest version and you should be good to go!

Head over to the Download Page to try TopoFusion out, free of charge.

I read up a bit on this and it seems there is no yahoo WMS server, they are actually displaying the images using a javascript (or flash) API.  So it does not appear there is going to be a WMS server/string you can just drop into any WMS application, like TopoFusion.

I am curious how they are doing and if there might be a way to do the same in TF.  Will plan to take a deeper look into it.

Thanks for the note.

« on: September 18, 2009, 09:03:43 PM »
Current public versions of TopoFusion Pro will have issues downloading color aerials in the "Color" tileset.  Multiple servers have changed their access methods within the last few days.

We apologize for the inconvenience, and will have a new version released ASAP, most likely by Monday, September 20th.

We have a beta version, available to all registered users of the software, with the fix.  For more details, see

Beta Testing / Color Aerial problems - Beta 3.88
« on: September 18, 2009, 08:59:44 PM »
I've released a new beta, v3.88 today.  Due to some server changes, the Color Aerial tileset will not download correctly for most states--central and eastern states especially.

If you're having issues with color aerials, this should fix you up.

Also, shaded relief has seen some nice improvements, both in clarity (less gray) and stability of the shading.  It's 98% to where I'm happy with it, maybe a few more tweaks in the future.

Zoom speed increase too!  Woo hoo!

Full release notes:

Quote
3.88 - [9/18/09] (Beta)

Fixed color aerial downloads for central and eastern US
(gives "tile not available" message in all previous versions of TF)
Fixed Color Aerials for Arizona - due to server change previous versions
of TopoFusion can no longer download aerials in Arizona
Improved shaded relief blending - better colors / less gray
Improved stability of shaded relief maps
Fixed large scale exports with shaded relief
Speed increase - mouse wheel zooming
Fixed bug opening certain UTM waypoint text files
Fixed problems displaying 'fuzzy' tile for Color and WMS tilesets
Installer now remembers installation directory (for future upgrades)
Changed multiplayback time format (year moved to correct place)

Suggestion for saved tiles.

When saving tiles, the black square remains on screen to show which tiles where saved. But it does not remain on subsequent runs of TF. It would be good to have a map overlay which would show locations of all the tiles saved, currently and previously too. and that layer should be easy to toggle as needed.

A map overlay is not a bad idea, but right now you can save out the black box to a .gpx file (there's a button on the batch download form).  Just store all those and you should be good.

I've thought about trying to depict which tiles exist in the cache, but the different layers and many different tilesets/grid patterns makes it a little difficult.  I think the GPX file box is probably good enough for now.

I would love to hear more here too.  I have looked into the APRS protocol, but found it unnecessarily complicated.  I didn't get the sense that there was enough interest to justify delving deeply into it.

It's hard to describe, but this image might help, though it doesn't describe it perfectly:

Right now the UTM grid lines in TF are straight up and down because the topo maps themselves are in the UTM projection.  That figure shows UTM zone boundaries, but the concept for any given UTM line is close to the same.

In the TopoWMS (and Color Aerial) tilesets the grid lines would look more like in the figure.  I don't really use grid lines when I print maps (I prefer following tracks I've pre-laid out in TopoFusion before going out into the field) so I don't know if that totally screws up the usage of the grid or not.  I suppose it still gives you a good estimate as to your coordinate by looking at which grid square you or a feature is in.
